Having just got the remaining jute material from my 1970 car out of storage after 10 years, I thought it might be helpful to post some pictures of what is left as a comparison to the patterns that Kats posted previously, which I think were from a Japanese market car? hope this is of help to someone. The mention of a ford capri is enough to wizz off any British z owner. The number of times that those who know nothing about z's say 'it looks a bit llike a ford capri' as a kind of a summation of what the z is about really gets my goat. A capri is no competitor chassiswise as they were running a live rear axle and cart springs right up until they stopped making them in the 1980's, and seeing them hop around the circuit at track days whilst z's run rings round them is great. The last and best car from 1987 were no quicker in a straight line than my 1972 standard 240z. They also had almost as bad a rust problem as z's. Going offthread a bit the capri is a good example of how poor manufacturer parts support can result in once common cars almost disappearing from our roads, as spare parts for European fords over 20 years old now are almost non existent, and so 1970's capris in good condition are probably rarer than z's. I think the z has fared pretty well in spare parts supply in comparison. An alfa GTV ? Now that's what I call a rust problem. great car though. Just my opinion Andrew
  4. No help here I'm afraid here, but all I can say is if someone the size of Z-kid finds it tough going then I have no chance.:classic: Andrew

I was wondering what was holding the front end of the car together once you cut out that huge section of inner wing/chassis member. Great job though. Inspiration to all those who think their car is too far gone to repair:classic:

Last time I went to where I grew up (about 100 miles away) I nearly totalled my car as some idiot had put a new traffic junction in on a fast section of road that I knew like the back of my hand:stupid:

Dave I'd go with 26th-z and HS30-H on this. Early emblems all metal except rear hatch grilles which have always been plastic. I do know that Charlie Osborne from zeddfindings was searching for metal rear hatch grilles a year or so back, so perhaps they do exist? Originality aside, I have sought to get a metal set of emblems because in my experience they are much less likely to break off their mounting tabs than the plastic ones. Unfortunately the rear hatch grilles (plastic only?) seem to be almost impossible to remove from the hatch without breaking the mounting tabs off. Zedrally, I have recently bought a pair of metal fender emblems for about $35 off ebay, which were in above average condition. I did get outbid on a set which were probably in far better nick that went for $90odd. regards Andrew

that list of parts looks very similar to my own, I've had most of the parts ( with the exception of the shocks and SU's) sitting in my garage for the last couple of years waiting for me to find time to fit them. Some great upgrades in your list. :classic: We do care: its good to hear what other zdrivers are doing on their cars. Not having had a running z for many years I need all the incentives/encouragement I can get!!

Dave good to see you back:classic: There are some good pictures showing how the jack/wheel chocks and tool bag fit in the tool storage areas in Kats' jute material thread. It's quite a long thread but the pictures are worth it:classic: These also show the clips that hold the wheel chocks and jack in place. These clips are very difficult to come by. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9168&highlight=jute+material As far as I know jack/chocks and tool/jackhandle bag were the only 3 items that go in the storage area, but I may be wrong. I too suspect that some spanners were included in the tool bag as I have 1 nissan branded spanner that came out of a parts car. hope it helps Andrew

Halz good to them in tan. I can see that the piping that is missing from the datsun restore ones is present on the classic datsun ones. I can also see the piping on the pictures posted by dc311 great pictures guys:classic: regards Andrew

I know this is a long shot, but does any one know of a series 1 shell about to be scrapped anywhere? I would like to cut a section out from the rear deck (pretty much the section you see in the attached picture courtesy of Kats), to replace the area on mine where a previous owner has cut speaker holes. Many thanks for any assistance Andrew

I got mine from Datsunrestore. BUT I am not bad mouthing their seat covers. I'm going to keep the set I bought for my second (not so original) 240z. It's only because I am going for originality on my 1970 car that they are not the right ones. I have one undamaged original seat which I am trying to find a matching seat cover kit for.(Kats has inspired me to go that last 10%!!!) The datsun restore ones appear to be well made and they are $60 cheaper than classic datsun, but there are some detail differences from the original ones which I didn't realise until after I bought them, and I think the seat would look odd if I had one original and one datsun restore seat cover in my car. You may think I am being a bit over conscious of the detail. :classic: I have attached a picture of old and new top cover side by side. The areas I thought they differed from the original are: 1) some of the edge piping is missing. 2) The texture in the middle of the backrest and middle of the bit you sit on is quite different. 3) The vent holes in the backrest are larger and look very different. I'd really like to hear from someone who has classic datsun or MSA seat covers as to how close to original those seat covers are. Gav240z, how bad are the seats in your car? My seats that looked very worn out had most of the damage on the seat cover itself. The foam was reusable, but needed some minor repairs and extra padding.

NickF I'd like to see if these classic datsun seat covers are TOTALLY as original as I have heard before splashing out my hard earned cash. ( bought a cheaper set from somewhere else: no good:cry:) look forward to seeing some pictures Did you have any problem getting Classic Datsun to ship overseas? regards Andrew

Kats here is the link for the blue braided hose. http://www.needforspeed.co.uk/pages/sbv_pn.asp?PartNo=VHO10B&LineNo=248071000 I have ordered some of this hose and will post comparison pictures with an oem hose when it arrives. Apologies for the time taken re 1970 tyre I will get to it soon. It will not be sold to any one else:classic: Out of interest how many of the 1970 fuel hose clamps are there on your car. I reckon it should be about 10 in total. I only have 2 on mine, the rest have been replaced with modern ones. regards Andrew

Joseph/Kats I came across a motorsport site ( haven't got the link at present as I found it at work) that sell the braided fuel and vaccum hose in red, blue and black. black looks a bit too dark, and red is of course no good, but the blue looks like quite a good approximation of the original grey. The only bummer is that they don't sell any big enough to do the rad hoses I will post the link when I'm back at work regards Andrew

26thz I was hoping someone with an early car might chip in as I didn't know what cars they went on. I saw them before they were sold but was going to check if they were original on the early cars. They went on a buy it now about 10 minutes later:cry: regards Andrew
  20. Just a thought but are the door keys the same as the hatch on a 2+2? ( assuming of course that you have the door key and a previous owner hasn't changed them so that they are different to the hatch) Removing a door lock is a lot easier than removing a hatch lock, and an auto lock smith can make you up a key for the door lock which you might then be able to use on the hatch. You might however not want to go the the expense on a parts car and do what Gav says. edit: oops : do what MR CAMOUFLAGE says apologies to Mr Camouflage Hope it helps Andrew

Beandip the items on ebay were from seller rzola, and they were purchased on a buy it now almost as soon as they were listed, ( I was very tempted bby them) so you will need to check on completed items if you look now. This will at least give you a picture of the items ( if rzola is OK about you using it). hope it helps Andrew

Tezasz In my experience, on a series 1 car it is an a swine of a job to get the drain tubes inside the hatch to seal properly. From new they were stuck to the inside of the hatch with some sort of glue/sealant, which goes hard/brittle over the years and might be leaking. Not an easy job to sort out, especially as you need to remove the plastic hatch grilles which on my car were very difficult to remove without breaking off the mounting prongs. Hope it helps Andrew
  23. I have to say Arch-z's red rb20 is one of my current favourites. I'm a bit of a purist so I don't go for anything that has wheel arch flares or really deep front spoilers. I normally like the deep dish wheel look but there is something about Arch-z's car that is just so right Andrew http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=10027
  24. datto-zed It seems a lot of z's are worth more as spares than complete cars as there seem to be quite a few people who are breaking z's and ebaying the bits. Especially it seems the 2+2 as it is not seen as sporty as the 2 seater. Assuming Aussie market cars are pretty much the same as in the UK just a few of the most sought after bits off a 2+2 are the bits that will go on a 2 seater, I am thinking of: engine and gearbox r200 diff and mountings front wings cowl panel rear lights as you have said suspension and steering items dashboard I'm not sure about the hatch, but I know the doors are unique to the 2+2 there are probably a load of interior items that are interchangeable with 260z 2 seaters. If you are thinking about shipping abroad, I would think only smaller items would be practical due to the higher cost of international shipping. I thought there was still quite a lot of interest in z's still in OZ though. Surprisingly in the UK the 2+2 is becoming a lot more popular now as it is seen as a good 'family' compromise compared to the 2 seater, and as so many were broken up for spares there aren't many left. Just my opinion Andrew
