My Datsun 240Z
I just picked up Chas wheels. I'm going to try them tomorrow on my Z and find out if this is the problem !

My Datsun 240Z
I allready tested yesterday with the new rebuild steering rack, slight difference but not much. I also read their site, and thought that could be it, that's why I let a shop rebuild the steering rack..it had to be done anyhow. @ rcb280z: allready tried that to, in our out of gear no difference !

I bet it's the wheels/rims to ! I'm going to try yours.. It looks like radial runout tire or rim

Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
Although the new rebuild steering rack feels more solid, shimmy is less, but still there..yup I'm going to try chas wheels next step..

Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
I'm going to try chas' wheels when I have my steering rack back and the problem is not solved It could be radial runout maybe.. The FSM also point towards that direction: Shimmying: this is abnormal vibration of the front suspension group and the entire steering linkage, and occours when a specific speed is attained. Possible causes: Difference in height of left and right tire treads. Corrective action: replace tires That would suck because I just bought for about 400 euro on Dunlop tires last year and they barely made km's..

Weekend drive: Engine hesitating and then gave up altogether. Water in fuel.
Here's your problem. Good chance it is the gas station. There are various reports of owners with new cars here who have had the same problem ( tros radar, or just type the dutch words " water in de tank auto tankstation " in google, filling their fuel tanks on mostly non brand related gas stations. Why do you use 98 anyhow ?, 95 is fine it's only a waste of money. The 98 could also have been in the tank at the gas station for a longer time, because most people fill with 95.. causing possible seperation like fast woman suggests.

Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
Hi Chas, Next weekend I allready have some other things to do. I can't go anywhere with the 240z now anyhow have to wait for the rebuild steering rack.. it will be somewhere next week for that to arrive. I could come over for a visit, but that will be in 2 weeks or so.. I made a video of the front left side wheel putting the camera on a fixed position, you can see there's a few mm height difference, not sure if this could cause the problem ? I have to wait for the steering rack to be back and drive to find out.. View My Video

My Datsun 240Z
Yes.. I will try one last time with the rack. If that doesn't solve it, I will try that. The steering rack is the last part I haven't replaced/rebuild.

My Datsun 240Z
Okay... I had another look and found a " knock '' sound in the steering housing ( rack ), when turning fast left to right on the steering wheel when parked. Als found play in the right side in the steering housing ( rack ). So I took the steering housing(rack) out for rebuild ( I guess it was never done since 1971. Hopefully this solves the problem. If not it should be the wheels or a hub that is bent I guess. I checked the brake discs and they are not warped.

Hi Mark, I did not replace the steering rack. But not sure if this can cause those problems.

Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
Hi, the problem was there, before they drilled the wheels. It made no difference. My brother is thinking maybe one of the front wheel hubs may be bent, but I find that hard to believe.

Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
the drilling was done by a specialised shop for damaged rims, because they had a centration problem, also 2 rims where bent, they repaired it. I have a feeling it is still the rims somehow..

- Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
Any ideas where to look are welcome ? So far I can think of I changed/did: - 4 rims repaired/balanced and holes drilled for conical lug nuts. - new tires dunlop streetresponse, was balanced with the repaired rims yesterday - new engine/transmission and differential mounts - replaced propshaft and drive shafts - replaced front and rear wheel bearings - replaced every part of the suspension front and rear including tie rods etc. - replaced steering coupler - checked steering house play, seems minimal/normal ? Wheel responds directly to steering wheel movement - There's no play in the steering wheel inside the car - Engine runs well, pulls good in all gears, I do notice a little wobbling in the car when parked or in neutral and engine on idle. - differential changed for a good R180 ( Leon V ) - There's was no play noticable on the exit side from the transmission/propshaft when I feel on the propshaft - front brake discs: I feel no shocks or high low points in the brake pedal when braking, discs not warped, seem okay ? - replaced all 4 shocks with kyb new ones - front wheels where aligned not so long ago - car does not pull left or right when I let go of the steering wheel I might have missed something.. The problem start around 50 mph, and gets worse after that. When I hold the steering wheel around 50 mph it's not much noticable I can feel it but I can manage to hold the steering wheel quite steady, but when I let it go at the same speed, it starts to wobble a lot left to right... Gr Bart- I may be buying a 280Z soon, need some explanation on differences with 240Z
I know that Stolze only has 240z's and he has nice rustfree examples standing there. But at a price... I think the easiest thing to say is more money buys you less problems..- My Datsun 240Z
Well.. problem is still there...to bad I even cleaned the inside of the wheels, so they could balance it properly. What could be it ? It start's at 50 mph.. steering wheel wobble ( left to right )and vibration, also vibration on the chassis noticable. Could it still be the rims, or tires ? They are Dunlop.. It's driving me nuts , but I will keep searching for the problem. Edit: I notice engine movement shaking the car a bit when running stationairy in the car, when parked or waiting in front of a traffic light. Not sure if this got anything to do with it. All mounts are replaced.- My Datsun 240Z
After going to 3 wheel " specialists " , finally found one who found the following: 2 bent rims and the holes will be drilled conical, so I can use conical lug nuts to center it just right. Fingers crossed !- bought rear wheel bearing set, but not sure if correct ?
This kit is now for sale. If anybody on the club here needs it PM me. It fits on 280ZX and some other, follow the link Chas posted.- Speedometer still not working
I pushed mine to deep once, the sound wasn't nice and it didn't work.. then I saw the slot like zed head mentions.. it worked then.- New Z on the road again...
Cool ride ! That green/brown interior combo is really nice - Steering wheel vibration/wobbling problem still not found
