Restoring/Disassembling 240z Tail Lights
The hot water helps loosen the stuff around the edges, holding the lens to the housing. If I recall, I had to carefully get the little clip on the back off by some other means (can't exactly recall). I don't want to tell you wrong, but I was scared straight by other posters about being extra careful not to break the little post off.

David Carradine found dead
Years ago there was a kid at my high school who died doing autoerotic asphyxiation. It was sad, he was found in his closet also.

Very Stiff Ride
I've been suffering from a really rough ride after a botched rear stub axle replacement from a local mechanic. I suspect the rear struts were somehow damaged, either intentionally or unintentionally when I had it in the shop... It's almost like there's no control on the rebound for at least one of the rear struts. Rather than put my car back in their garage for something they would just charge me more for in the end, I chalk it up to experience, and a kick in the arse to get back to doing all my own work. In preparation for replacing the struts and springs all around with Tokico HP blues and Tokico springs, I took my Z to the pay and spray and gave her a good over and under wash. Surprisingly, the ride became much more acceptable after the wash. Not sure what that means. On the drive to the pay and spray, the ride was almost unbearable - it felt like the car was shaking itself apart, but on the drive back it was maybe 70% back to the way it was before.

Locking Gas Cap
There are already threads about this, so I feel a bit silly posting this in this one but you probably won't see it otherwise... it's best to post these sorts of things where the discussion is already going on... FWIW my '72 had an old locking gas cap that fit the stock flange, but the locking post broke off from a fatigue crack a few years back. It was mostly made of some cheap pot-metal, similar to what toy matchbox cars are made of. It was so poorly manufactured, I doubt there will be many more floating around intact. There were no markings on the cap indicating who made it. I also bought the BMW cap under the mistaken impression that it would fit and actually function as advertised by various posters on that OTHER site. I haven't gotten around to messing with it, because I don't see the point. Another poster reported (as you did) that it can simply be removed like a non-locking gas cap when locked.

Thermostate bolts
Yeah, I had this problem years ago when I first got my car. Do yourself a favor and get some high grade stainless bolts and apply anti-seize like there's no tomorrow.

So... Whats your beer? ID's Checked at the door.
I've been drinking a lot of Live Oak Hefeweizen lately (from a local Austin brewery). I've also taken a liking to Schneider Aventinus.

ZT Just SU's DVD Anyone?
Probably a good investment, I have the VHS tape but it got mangled at one point by someone being overly vigorous pulling it out of the VCR before the VCR had finished fully ejecting it. Having the DVD would be nice

Stop the insanity one of our Z gets Torched
...And after a knock on the door, and an all expenses paid trip to sunny Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that was the last anyone on the Classic Zcar Club ever heard from TomoHawk. :paranoid:

Front end 'spook' options..
That does look pretty rad. Before you take her down off the ramps, do you think you could get underneath and take some photos showing locations you bolted stuff up? Could be good reference, since I don't recall seeing such pictures before on this forum.

My dual exhaust build
Reading the thread about the Monza exhaust being NLA, I've been thinking about a true dual system. Have you managed to get it running well yet? I can't wait to hear it in action!

Another 240Z exhaust goes NLA
The topic of this thread is the 240Z version of the Monza exhaust. http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/z/full.aspx?page=73 Not there anymore.

Front end 'spook' options..
I've always found that the local Ace Hardware branch usually has a good assortment of metric bolts in their "fastener central" or whatever area. Never had a problem finding the bolt I needed in stainless. This was for when I lived in Dallas and where I live in Austin, I assume Houston stores should be the same.

Another 240Z exhaust goes NLA
There will always be purists, and there will always be those that just want to do whatever. There are whole sites (i.e. hybridz) dedicated to what many of us would consider a bastardization of a classic car. To each their own, I suppose. If that's how things end up going, it will be unfortunate because the very limited number of purists are certainly not enough to maintain an aftermarket for anything really. FWIW there are plenty of people who are in the 30-50 year old age range who are into S30 engine swaps, and there are more than a few people in their 20s (myself, for instance) who are interested in keeping their car as original as they can reasonably manage. I know I'll probably be doing the same thing, shaking my finger at young whippersnappers who do this, that, and the other thing that I will disapprove of in my later years, but hopefully I can remember that no generation or group is completely homogeneous.

Towing
Can't you just get a trailer that gets all 4 wheels off the ground? I rented one from u-haul 5 years ago or so, and it wasn't that expensive. Towing it around on a dolly is car abuse in my book.
-
Front end 'spook' options..
Maybe if you could take a side profile shot of the center brace and how it is in relation to the surrounding supports we could tell if it's been tweaked in a fender bender or something (somehow?)

tokico strut and spring question
Yes, this is normal, and is mentioned in all the other tokico spring/strut related threads. Check it out, search for tokico.

The next 240Z
I am impressed with the Genesis Coupe on paper, although I don't think it will be another 240z. I wasn't around back then, but I think for many Americans the 240Z was a bit of a shock and awe type milestone in that "wow, these Japanese can really make a good sports car!" kinda way. Unfortunately, I feel like Hyundai has been in front of us muddling around in the dark for years with things like the Tiburon that lacked any real inspiration, and it's left quite a bland taste in my mouth regarding Hyundai cars in general. Maybe if they had come out with a car like this way back then, things would have been different from my perspective. The Z4 is a nice car, and an inline six to boot, but I think at that price point it's not really anything similar to what the 240Z was in it's day. These days I get much more excited by sports cars from low volume production companies... I guess I just like the idea of not seeing a carbon copy of my car at every other intersection. This is one of the things I love about my 240Z here in Texas. Anyway, back on point, I don't think there will be another 240Z-like phenomenon, not the way the auto market is today.

To Stripe or Not To Stripe?
Yeah, I think the stripe makes the car look too busy... trying too hard, essentially. Let me put it this way - would you roll your eyes if your buddy was talking about putting stickers on the side of his Honda Civic?
-
Dashboard Preservation?
You're right, the texture looks more like the texture of the half dash cap the PO of my car put on than it does the OEM dash...

Raammat, how much to kill tunnel heat?
Did all the extra thickness from all those layers cause any challenges fitting the carpeting and console back on?

Rota RB-R 16x8 +10
You may want to check over on Hybridz, they have a few threads about the 16x8 +10 RB-R I think. Someone there suggested using the Nissan Quest studs, which are longer, and I believe most people said the rear fenders required rolling, but the fronts were fine with the proper studs and spacers. Regardless, please let us know what happens. I was considering the same setup the other day for my '72, and I'll also have my tokico springs/struts installed by that point.

He is on hybridz, username is RB240Z. Found it by googling his name from the credits. The internet can be so creepy.

Slick HD 240Z video
I was browsing Vimeo.com and came across this video someone made of a 240z: http://www.vimeo.com/3895132 It's in HD (you need to turn it on with the HD button). Just to reiterate: this is NOT MINE, I just found it Enjoy

Modified VZ car on eBay
I agree, there is a definite need for more outspoken voices like yourself to keep everyone straight on the facts. There is a massive amount of misinformation floating around regarding the history of the early Z cars. One look at the wikipedia page for the 240z can be enough to make one's teeth grind. I think it's a shame that this car has been so heavily modified.
