Normally you would need to clean up the scan prior to printing it. I have a guy that does decals for my race cars, and he has been able to reproduce just about everything I need for my race cars. He would be a good option for doing your decal.

Racing Harnesses
factory seats could be a problem (as shown above) only because they will not keep the shoulder harneses in postion in a hard crash. They would tend to roll off your shoulder and you would have no shoulder harness = BAD A seat with separate headrests (like the Design 2000 seats I used to have) or another seat with holes will work fine. you need to find a balance between what you want and what your dad wants.... Here is a photo of what the design 2000 seats kinda looked like. http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd320/markgoze/seats/recaro%20njoy/DSC_5611.jpg The lap belts attach to the factory locations the shoulder belts attach to the bolts for the rear struts. The shoulder belts go under the headrests between the two posts that hold the headrest up. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Recaro-Seats-Blue-VW-Helios-Retro-RARE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a543Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a0Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem270324529849QQitemZ270324529849QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories A seat that is too wide with shoulder bolsters or a seat that is thick on the bottom will not fit well in your Z.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere. I think you are going to have to compromise with your desires and your Dads as you both have different requirments for comfort and support. For your requirements the seatbelts will hold you really firmly, look to that instead of your seat bolster to hold you in place. You will need to look at seats that fall into the catagory of a sporty seat that is comfortable for both of you. You will want a seat that has a low, thin bottom cushion with a mild side bolster as you are both tall and many GT style seats are pretty thick on the bottom cushion. In my street 240 I had design 2000 seats (made by Recaro) that fit the bill. A good cofortable seat, it used the stock mounting locations and because it had an adjustable head rest, the 4 point harnesses worked well. The shoulder belts that I had were 2 straps that were sewn into one and attached as I mentioned above the lap belts were attached to the factory locations. This solution gave great support for spirited daily driving, like auto x and running around on the street. It is not a solution for a serious racing application. However at that point you are going to need to modify your car beyond a point where it can easily be put back to stock. I agree that a anti submarine belt is a good idea in a full race application, but it would require drilling a hole in the floor of your car and for daily use it would be quickly abandon. I would suggest that a 4 point latch-link or cam lock system is the way to go. A moderate racing seat that you both find comfortable with a location for shoulder belts and you will be all set. This will fit the bill for auto-x and an occasional track day. If you decide to get more involved, and put together a dedicated car for track and autocross, there are other safety related suggestions I would make.

Good question. The lap belts won't be a problem as the factory bolt that holds the OEM belts can be used. The real problem, or challenge, is the shoulder belts as they need to be installed higher than the cargo tie downs. In a hard accident the belts will try to collapes down and can break your back or slip off your shoulders rendering them useless. I would suggest that you mount to the top of the rear strut tower and use a belt that will work effectively mounting to that single location. A roll bar mount is a much better solution, but if you are not going to install a roll bar then this is your best bet. Are you using the factory seats?

Paul Newman & #33 at Sears Point
Great Photos!! I was hoping to see a photo of my 510 as it raced at Sears around that time frame. Any chance you have other photos of B sedan 510's? Thanks for the great photos!! Ron

I saw Kirk Allegro this last weekend at Floyd Link's 80th Birthday. John Morton and John Knepp were there as well, all BRE guys. Kirk went on to FAR but I have not really discussed that with him. I will ask him about it next time I talk to him. These days Kirk is involved in comercial real estate and has not raced in many years. I believe that Kirk was sponsored by FAR performance at one point with his roadster. Today Les Cannaday owns Kirk's roadster and it is being restored back into it's former racing glory. If you are interested in this piece of racing history I would suggest looking at Rob Beddington's Datsun website, or contact Les Cannaday at 760-940-6365. http://www.datsun.org/fairlady/701FAR.htm Ron

Signed (by Mr. K) Z Poster on Craig's List
That is outragious. I have two of these posters. #1174 and (i think) #1175. They feature the BRE #46 240Z, Bob Sharp 280ZX and Cunningham 300ZX. All of them are signed by Mr K, and they are pretty common. $350 is way overpriced in my opinion.

another new guy
I saw that car for sale on ebay. Congratulations come out and run with us in Vintage! We race with VARA and HSR along with HMSA and GRL. We run a number of events in southern california, Arizona and Nevada. Hope to see you out at the track. Ron

Triple Carb Manifold Short or Long??
The Mikuni Manifold I used to have was a short runner style.

What Other Z/Datsun would/do you own and why?
Hmm, Tough question. I would really enjoy a R34 Skyline. Currently I own and drive my BRE240Z race car (very rarely), My 510 "B" Sedan racer with history is under restoration and my 67.5 2000 is under repair after a little issue with a tire barrier at the Coronado Festival of Speed. Finally, a Nissan Armada that is great for towing and is my daily driver. My wife has eyes on the new G37 Convertable. Ron

Julio, I am not sure where the line is drawn here. Ghosted images are a good question. These are not sensitive questions, just ones I don't have answers to and would refer to the people directly involved. This subject has direct bearing on me personally because I have built a BRE tribute car, and I will get mine licensed by BRE. I would suggest others to do so as well. BTW, The frog is still dead Carl, Thanks for the background, we know the history, sometimes I overlook that others do not.

Again, I cannot speak to the legal side of this as I am not a lawyer. Gayle was clear to me that this was not an attempt to generate $$$. It is to protect their TRADEMARKS, according to the draft agreement she sent over to me. The document is called "BRE Tribute Trademark Agreement". Again, I would forward any additional questions to Info@bre2.net

Rear Spoiler
Julio, I would suggest that you forward your question to Gayle Brock directly. As far as I know, they do not race Datsuns of any type currently. I know that Peter has a 510, but it is not painted up as a BRE car. As far as I know, they are within their legal right to do this, I thought that the paint scheme is a little far fetched, but Gayle says otherwise. I will stress again, that they are not trying to apply pressure to any party who wishes to build a replica or tribute car. They are trying to protect their property from model manufactures and alike.

Hi Mike, Yes, BRE is protecting their trademarks. This includes the paint scheme, decals etc. Mostly this is to protect BRE from companies that would offer a model for sale with their paint scheme on a Datsun car in such a way as it could be considered a "BRE" type vehicle. This is not meant to deter individuals from building a BRE replica, and it is not a way for BRE to generate revenue. It is a way for them to protect what they have created. In order for BRE to hold up their trademarks they must enforce this to all parties. Including tribute vehicles like mine. Gayle has forwarded me a copy of their agreement and I have made several recommendations regarding how they approach this as it is not meant to effect the construction of tribute cars, and create problems their owners. If anything it would be a bonus at the time that a BRE approved tribute car came up for sale as it will be well documented by the real article. As to the specifics of your question.... BRE Graphics in narrative form: Car has diagonal strips that extend from the top rear of the front quarter panel, across the door seam, to the bottom of the front of the door. Approx 1/3 down the length of the stripes there is a break where the name Datsun or BRE is placed. Car is to be painted in two contrasting colors. The first color is to extend from the front of the car (front spoiler) over the top of the car (hood, roof and trunk lid) down the back of the car (down the backside and below the bumper). This “top†color is to extend slightly down the sides of the car (approx 2 inches) This “top†color is to be used for the stripes. In the case of a two-color car the “top†color will be the color of the entire stripe The second color is to be used: For the sides of the car, filling in the entire area from below the line of the top color to the bottom of the car. On the back of the car in the area that houses the brake lights. As a “panel insert†on the back half of the top of the car There is the option to use a third color. If a third color is used it will be used as the color of the bottom 2/3rd of the diagonal stripes Also included as part of the schema is the use of over-sized race numbers. These numbers are placed on the hood of the car, on each side of the car and on the top of the car in the 2nd color “panel insertâ€. The BRE logo is to be visible from all sides of the car. In the back it will be placed where a license plate would reside. In the front it will be on the spoiler. On the sides it is to be placed where side marker lights would normally be located.

Gayle and Peter are great about that stuff, they are using the same guy that I used to have all the die cut decals made for my BRE replica, so they are great quality and a well made and correct reproduction of the original decals.

But Montezuma, it is what BRE ran on their 240Z race car in 1970, so it "IS" to americans the "BRE" spoiler as well.

I am a little fuzzy on the exact details, but Interpart took over selling BRE items when Peter Brock moved away from racing. I believe that Mac Tilton was directly involved with Interpart. So saying you have a BRE/Interpart item is correct. BRE cataloges ceased to exist in 73 or 74? after that BRE Datsun performance parts were sold through Interpart. The spoiler pictured above in Carls post is the 432 spoiler, that type of spoiler ran on the BRE 240Z #46.

Rear Spoiler
Hi Car & Zero, Carl, you are correct, the spoiler on the C-Production BRE 240Z was a 432 spoiler. The spoiler that BRE sold as a "BRE" Spoiler could have been different. Les Cannaday sells the 432 spoiler as a "BRE" spoiler and a 432 spoiler. Zero, the spoiler has a flat section that is around 12" to 15" on the passenger side rear of the car. If you look in my gallery you will see photos of the spoiler front and back. Note the section that has the DATSUN decal on the back of the spoiler. That decal is 13 inches long and is where the flat section is on the spoiler.
-
Rear Spoiler
The original BRE spoiler is the same as the 432 spoiler. Peter Brock used the 432 spoiler on the BRE 240Z's. There is a flat section on the back for an emblem should you desire to install one.

Dave "Big" Deal RIP
I have heard from a couple of sources that Dave Deal passed away October 14th after battling cancer. Dave was a local celebrity, as I would run into Dave at a local breakfast spot from time to time. A quiet unassuming man, Dave’s artwork had a voice of it’s own. Dave Deal‘s most recent work involved the characters for Pixar’s movie Cars. Dave was also the designer for numerous iconic logo’s including Armor All, and his caricatures of cars in the 70’s and 80’s for numerous publications. A friend of Peter Brock, Dave had done a number of caricatures for Peter including his cannonball run effort and of the BRE 510 #46. For those of you old enough perhaps you will remember Deal’s wheels from the 70’s. Dave collaborated with Revell to design and produce these models. Some are back in production today. Dave was a friend to the Datsun community and a number of his caricatures included Datsun Z cars. Dave will be missed. http://www.bigdealart.com/index.cfm?Cat=1 Ron
