Invasion of the body snatchers.....
WASHINGTON (Associated Press)- With nearly twice as many "smog days" as any other state, California continues to lead the nation in dirty air, followed by Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio, an environmental group said. http://apnews.excite.com/article/20020830/D7LNCBH00.html A link to the whole story. Which I'm sure will not help ease restriction for California Classic Owners. Don't kill the messenger.

I will tackle it later this afternoon and let you know how it went. Again, I appreciate all the help I have gotten in the short time I've been a member.

One succeedingly long question? Where did you buy your front air dam (bumper) grille, whats it called, who do I call to get it, and when can you come over and help me with mine? I just finished removing the entire front end, next comes engine. I'm so lucky, this car is so clean, it amazes me. Anything less then a comlplete rebuild would not do this car justice. SO CLEAN, and for $50.00. God bless the non-car people!!!!

77 280Z DASH Removal
Please bare in mind that this is my first Z project, as I test your patience with the crunchy new guy questions. I consider myself relatively intelligent, so if someone could quickly run through the steps of removing my dash, I would be greatful. Also, what is that strange (looks like dried battery acid) substance running down from under the dash, (passenger side)? The battery isn't located near the site of origin. In advance, THANK YOU!

Invasion of the body snatchers.....
Start by contacting your insurance company. Find a local agent if you don't have one and bend his ear for an hour. Trust me, these sheisters know alot about vehicle qualifying. If I'm not mistaken you could register your Z as a custom street legal car?????? I'm not from california, but this is an option in NY. I wish you luck, and hopr you find a way around it.

"Aircraft strippers" However
I was thinking Pumpkin Orange, with Pea Green EKG Pinstripping down the sides!!!! .....NOT... Porsche has a color called venecian blue, a light bluish gray. I like it alot, but I'm not settled on anything yet. I don't want to screw this car up in anyway, so patience will be my marker until I know I know, Ya know???

"Aircraft strippers" However
The metal etching information was helpful. I guess the larger concern I was attempting to express but seemed to have failed at is; in order for me to feather the low points evenly, it seems as though I will be sanding large portions to metal base. I suppose with some much needed guidance from the members, I'll find the right prep before painting. (car will not be ready for paint until early October).

Gas tanks and bumper mounts?
I figured, I could pretty much look at them and know, but some of the Z owners on this site have forgotten more then I know, so I assumed it best to first ask. Thanks:cry:

Frame Rail Rust
Since I do not feel as though the rust is enough to effect the suspension and handling of the car, I have taken this thread to it's proper location in "Body & Paint". Thanks

"Aircraft strippers" However
I read the thread on stripping the cars, and understand (i think) the pitfalls. However, I helped a friend paint his 914 and we only surfaced preped for a new paint job. It turned out great, except where we had sanded some portion to the original metal. The shininess bled through and you could see, not feel the difference. My car has a gazillion layers of paint, in some cases I I have sanded to bare metal, how do I cover these? Just priming will not work as I have a solid 1/16th of paint height diference. What system should I follow? This particular 280z has very little rust areas to repair. Also, the interior metal is in great (original) shape. I simply wish to clean the metal inside the car and install new carpet/ interior panels. No need for paint. What is a good rust inhibiting cleaning agent? Is such a beast available? The only rust I have found is exterior. :stupid:

I have been looking around for a car I could turn into an SCCA Autocrosser. Imagine the look on my face when a friend told me that he knew a guy that had to get rid of 2-1977 280z cars. I have virtually no experience with these cars except that I have always admired their lines, and thought one would be fun to own. Now I have two. THinking one would end up a parts cars, I investigated each car to find the "parts cars". Neither of these cars qualify for parting out. Both are in relatively excellent condition (for a remodel) very little rust on one, none on the other. Both run well, just need alot of love. I paid $100.00 for both. Yep, 50 bones apiece for these beauties. I will not cut corners on either, but am not yet armed with enough knowledge to do things right, so I will be coming to you all often. Thank you in advance for your help, and your time. One happy Newborn TS

Gas tanks and bumper mounts?
Must I drop the Gas tank before removing the bumper mounts? I can see no other way to finagle them out, but have limited knowledge of these cars. Any alternate ideas?

Frame Rail Rust
HUH, Just goes to show you the extent of Zcar knowledge I'm working with over here. Hope I can change my login name so's not to remain an arse. Thank you for the help, I will do as you directed, then ask from there. Great site, glad I found it.

Frame Rail Rust
I recently purchased 2 very nice 1977 280 zx's. I paid 50.00 a piece for them. At a total cost of $100.00 neither could be considered part cars. Both run well with little body damage. However, one of them sat in the (not so smart) previous owners back yard for about a year. I jacked the car and notice some rust on the passenger side frame rail. Not alot, but enough to make me nervous. I read ZcarsRock posting about how he shoved steele beams inside the rails then "bolted them" in. I WOULD TRULY LIKE TO AVOID SUCH A TACTIC. Can any of you point me to a starting place concerning this problem? Thank you in advance for your help.
