Rust Replacement Parts
Man I can remember driving my second 77 2+2 home from the PO. It was quite dark out as I had to work late that night and my friend and I drove down together. I paid 250 for the car which externally had seen some better days however the interior was mint and it ran wonderful. So I'm driving home leading the way with my friend behind on a very tight windy North jersey back road through the woods when I flick the switch for the brights when low and behold, the entire lighting circuit went down. Zero lights what so ever. Needless to say, several minutes of cursing and fist pounding and wiggling everything, they came back on. I never did figure out what was wrong with that harness. I still have it in a box in the basement :classic:

Steering rack mount bracket
Yeah I just need the U shaped clamps that hold the rack to the front cross member. One side on the parts car rotted through and it twisted in half. If one of you guys has a set let me know what you want for them.

Actually, I'll have to scan a picture of the car when I brought it home. It really was a sweet looking ride. Here;s a list of what I got out of the car: American racing rims Front air dam 500.00 fiberglass turbo hood MSA side skirts MSA header and exhaust 1" front sway bar 7/8" rear sway bar all glass sunroof seats (bad shape though) Dash with cover L28 w/N42 brand new rotors Brand new Diff mount still in package Brand new E brake cable in package full interior black R-180 1" lowered springs Tokico struts never driven on all fasteners etc 4 speed all in all I can;t complain for the purchase price of the car being only 200.00 bucks..

78 280 hood vents
MSA carries them for 34.29 a piece brand new. I'd have to check my inventory, I used to have a bunch of them...I know I've traded and sold a couple over the years, but I think I still have 2 hoods in the attic

Does anyone on the site have an extra set of these in good condition? Mine from the parts car rotted through. Gee, how could that even be possible

removing jute leftovers
Can anyone suggest what to use to remove the remaining pieces of jute that are stuck to the firewall. Is there a solvent anyone knows that will loosen the adhesive and allow this crap to be scraped off??

This still hits us pretty hard especially since I live 40 minutes from NYC in Jersey. many of my friends and co-workers either work, or know someone that works in the city and there were many that worked in the WTC buildings that made it out. it still leaves me in utter disbeleif.

Yeah my buddy and I were able to move the shell WITH the trans, and complete rear suspension still attached. Like victor said, it;s not easy nor comfortable however not impossible. The bare shell was really not heavy at all with the suspension and trans out. It's just an awkward thing to carry. four guys and a couple of beers and you could walk that thing around the block with a beer in hand.

Question for the group
Thanks! You know I never thought to stick the end in a vice to tighen the fit and tack a bead in there to hold it. That is a good Idea and I may just do that also to keep things tight and movement free. I;d rather let the bushing do it's job than have the bushing and the metal moving around making a nice mushy feel. I'm almost all done suspension wise. Just about everything is sandblasted and POR'd up.

This one left the driveway last night on a flatbed to great graveyard in the sky. Kmack, I found I needed that rubber footrest pad and it was salvaged! the guy was going to tow it for free, however it ended up costing me 50 bucks to get it taken away as well....you can see the condition

Question for the group
In restoring the mustache bar for my 76 I removed the bushings.....however I did not just burn the rubber out and leave the metal insert, I bent the tangs back and punched out the entire bushing, and basically left the metal insert pretty wasted in getting it out. I purchased the G machine urethane bushing set from VB pn 88-717..THe kit require you to leave the bushin metal insert in the mustache bar and just remove the rubber. Can I just cut new insertd out of a piece of hollow round stock and insert? I can;t imagine anyone having a good set of the original inserts unless they were pressed out.

Macco.. or a real paint shop??
I agree with everyone else. No Maaco!!! If you don;t want to do it yourself, you could even bring the car down to your local Vo-tech or college and talk to the auto body teacher about maybe having the students do the project. You;d be most likely responsible for materials and such, however you would have the watchful eye of the teacher supervising that the work gets done correctly.

Kmack!! Maybe I should put the shell on ebay and just claim "some rust in the floors and frame rails". I think I've seen equivilant listings on there before. Theres one I can think of right now that involves two datsun trucks that have trees growing through the engine compartments

Use my post of the pics of my parts car and base your decision from there. My parts car has to be the worst case scenario out there.

I want to add one thing....let this one be an example on quality of your work. the floors in this car and the battery box were repaired about 8 years ago. Granted this one has been sitting about that long, however the work wasn't correctly rust proofed and it was a rushed job. Take the time to do it right and this won;t happen to your car. I only paid 2 hundred for the car but it breaks my heart to send it to the grave yard. I'll have to post a pic of it when I brought it home and cleaned her up.

Yeah, this one is not staying. As much as I hate seeing a Z go to the crusher, this one is out of my league and desire as far as custom fabrication is concerned. This one broke my heart as the car was gorgeous when it was complete and the idiot who owned it could not, and did not have any motivation to fix the issue which I could have done very easily for him. he wanted to fix it himself. I since have banned him from ever owning another Z again.
