Time to put the front cover back on. Should I use gasket sealant for the front cover gaskets? also the water pump, should it go on dry or use sealant? thanks
  4. Coworker that welded it for me soda blasted it.
  5. Yes! the Flying Spaghetti Monster is handy and has answered many questions, but you guys help out when things become a bit vauge. For some reason I hate dismantling my car, but I really enjoy the reasembly process. I can take my time and everything is clean.
  6. Progress today! First off I got the front cover back: If I did not work with a professional machine and weld guy I would have replaced the cover, but I am happy with the outcome. Also the timing set arrived today: I am happy that the mechanical timing is now correct and the chain is installed correctly. I think I noticed another error from who ever installed the last chain. The top of the passenger side tensioner was left slack I could tell from the bolt marks on it that it was tightened down in the loose position causing premature chain slack.

  8. Good job. The rare times I do find a Z in the bone yards I always find at least some little piece, if not nuts and bolts. Some times you have to look hard.
  9. Yes very toasty. Note the worn metal on the chain tensioner, I think this may have been the source of the sound! Ok new question: Which way is the oil slinger "oil thrower" installed cupped toward the engine or front of car? or just leave it off?
  10. No worries, My photos have not been that great. (my camera is starting to get greasy). Thanks but my old one is now repaired. My coworker even soda blasted it. He said it was to dirty to weld. I will post pics of it tomorrow. The old guides and tensioner: One strange thing that I noticed was that the bright links on the chain did not line up with the number 1 dimple on the cam sprocket. as a matter of fact the dimple was between two links. This may not matter as long as who ever installed the chain last counted the links correctly. Another strange thing was that I could find no dimple on the crank sprocket. At least till I removed it and found that the dimple was there just on the engine side not facing out. So now I am wondering how off my mechanical timing has been this whole time. Just a thought, Could improper mechanical timing have an impact on compression readings?

I "think" all L seres engines have the same front cover. But no worries My friend at work is welding mine back up for me. It did not have a large crack just a small stress crack from a little puncture.

Good to hear you are back on the road. Time for a valve adjust?
  16. Sweet.
  17. Those things always seem worn out. I wonder if it would be possible to make some sort of replacement from aluminum or springy steel.
  18. Not much to do until the new timing set arrives. I did find a used cover on ebay for $200.00. What a joke I could get a new one for 175 from courtesy Nissan. Anyhow I gave the cover to my machinist coworker, he will weld it up for me this weekend for $0.00. He does great work. He has even machined aircraft parts for my brother. I have read up in the FSM in regards to installing the new set and I have viewed Blue's write up also (thanks again Blue).Looks pretty straight forward. One question: Anything special about removing the crank sprocket? you must be joking, the gasket is a goner. Even if it looked ok I would replace the gasket. New ones come with the kit anyhow. I love that movie.

http://www.datsunstore.com/product_info.php/pName/airflow-meter-7778 Anyhow it does look like you have a very strange AFM. I looked at the pictures of the turbo AFM and it looks like you have sort of a hybrid frankenstein monster one.
  22. Yes the guides are way worn. It's academis at this point. A new timing set is on order. I think that removing the cover was the right thing to do, albeit a lot more work than I thought. A bright note: the gasket for the oil pan and head are in good condition after removing the front cover A sad note: the front cover has a small hole in the bottom with two cracks emenating from it. I am taking the cover to my coworker to see if he can weld it. He has welded cast aluminium many times for us. If not it looks like Nissan still has them for about $175.00. Or anyone here that could help that has a spare front cover in there pants pocket?
  23. Removed the Crank pully, AC pump bracket, lower coolent inlet and water pump. Water pump looks good. Front crank seal was leaking so fixing that will be a bonus. The front cover is off. Take a look at this:
  24. Dizzy and oil pump out. Crank pully is next. By the way there was a thin gasket on the dizzy.
  25. How do you hide money from a Z owner? A: put in a 77. My 77 eats money.
