How big are tyhe charcoal cans on the newer cars? If they're smaller, then you might get that big sucker out of your Z and use the space for something else. Can you mention a newer car that you KNOW has a charcoal cannister so I can see for myself? Thx.

Can I get some specs on the ignition coil that comes stock on the 280Z? Better yet, what's a good replacement? Thx.

You mean it was on yesterday... for people in the Americas.

Thanks, I will have to look at all that stuff. It won't be easy or simple, but it looks like it will have to be done.

No smoke out the tailpipe, but the tip is sooty inside. Can you explain what you mean but the injectors/regulator leaking?

I suspect that my engine is running a little rich ( from looking at the spark plugs) that's why I was asking.

I'd like to know if anybody has a good idea or gizmo for letting you know to turn your lights OFF? I don't want to be stuck somewhere with no juice. Thx.

the volt meter on my 280Z reads 16V with the engine on, a little less with the headlights on. I measured the voltage at the battery with the engine running and it reads a nice 13.5, so I will have to assume that there is a little something going on with the wiring somewhere else and the voltmeter is reading that. Can you get a volts reading at the back of the voltmeter? It would tell you if it isn't reading right & should be replace/fixed.

Is it possible to tune the ECU on a '78 280Z for more power or better fuel economy? What, if anything can you do to the ECU? Should it be swapped for something else? I'm looking for fuel economy (currently at about 17 ,mpg- would like to see 20.)

That might explain why it passed the e-check when I got it last summer.

My '78 280Z didn't have any emmissions stuff on it. No smog pump, no catalytic converter. The Haynes book says only Calif. cars had that stuff. BUT, I'm in Ohio and my 25+ year-old car is now exempt. Oh yeah-- no air conditioning, either. Another 100 Lbs less stuff to carry around.

I used to have a bookmark for an Z car interchange guide or book you can buy from some website. Does anybody know about it? Thx.

Got an idea.... Take your shifter knob to one of those laser engraving places and see if they can engrave it in there for you. I don't know what it would cost, but you could call them and ask. Another idea would be to get a brass/gold coin (plain) and have the pattern engraved or printed on there. Overcoat the printing so it doesn't rub off. Remember oto tell us how it turn out!

  15. So they just expect you to toss out the driveshat & axle shafts if they go dry?? What kind of dumb logic is that??
  16. How much lower did the Tokiko struts get? Were they a bolt-in? How would/do you know if your springs are weak? the back of my 280 is lower than the front.
  17. 1978 280Z, 3spd Auto. Is there a way to know IF you can grease your drive shaft & axle sahafts? I think I read somewhere that there were ones you could and couldn't grease. Thx.

Can someone please confirm that the pin will come out by tapping from the bottom? I hate to do that and hurt the hinge it it won't go. Thx.

The pin that the spring arm thing rubs on (driver's side) to hold it open looks like it broke off. Can you just hammer out the remaining bit and insert a new one? I was thinking about threading the hole and screwing in a bolt. Thx.
  20. Most newer cars have wiring installed for all the different options you can get- you just need to put in the switches & stuff. Does the 280Z have wiring in place so you can install some driving/fog lights?

I used to make custom wiring for street Rods, and I know what a PITA it is to do it. Right now, I'm real busy with a job, school, etc, so I don't want to spend all those hours duplicating something I could buy. It should solve a few things, too, like making the headlights brighter.
  22. from Vic. Br. catalog Z.36: 59-731 fuzzy inner glass trimLH or RH 59-482 window glazing rubber, RH (240-280) 59-483 LH (280 only) I think I would glue the fuzzies in with weatherstrip glue.
  23. On my '78 280Z, the driver's side window squeegees are still slightly pliable (or at least i think so) and the pass. sides ones look & feel like they're made of aluminum! Not to mention the splits, too. Arren't they supposed to be flexible rubber things? I should plan on changing them, if so- keeps the water out.

By the way, My 280z is getting power steering too.
  25. TomoHawk posted a post in a topic in Suspension & Steering
The front wheels were switched side-to-side to fix a problem with a pull to the right. Steering alignment couldn't fix the pull. I think the bounce was more pronounced after the switch. then I swapped in the new spare wheelwith no difference. I'm going to order a T/C rod bush kit from VB and lower control arm bushes. Anything else I should get? Come spring, the whole rear suspension gets overhaulled. Would worn sway bar bushings affect the bounce? I don't get any bounce/less bounce while on a slight turn. I looked at them a month ago, and I think they were the least bit loose, but didn't think about doing anything with them. I want to get the front stable so I can drive it occasionally, or to the barn for storage in Nov.
