Ditto. I'm going to use it as reference material to locate the holes on my frame, and maybe later, to attempt to fabricate something (maybe, if I win the MegaLotto )Best picture yet!

Stephen, I'm not really in need of one for city driving. I don't feel the need for one on the highway either. My car feels solid on the highway. thx any way. I'm sure there are a million others that want one.

When it gets to be that crazy, I get out the aluminum foil. You can tape sheets together to make bigger sheets, and it's infinitely shape-able. Finally, you can flatten out the whole mess, and lay it out on carboard, then metal.
  4. What do you guys think about using the DTM-style tips on a Z, ricey? I think dual straight tips are more nostalgic.

I'm from Ohio, too. Maybe I'll see you at the regionals next summer.
  6. I've seen some cars on the vintage races that look like they have four pieces of exhaust tubing sticking out..
  7. It can and has been done, under controlled conditions, and in the lab. Wave machanics.
  8. Yes, exhaust gases are fluids, but not as dense as liquids, like water. Water is 600 times as dense as air. I'm still tlooking ofor some 1 1/2 tips tho. Most auto parts & muffler stores have 2 or 3 inch stiff.
  9. You don't need to have double pipes the whole way back. My idea was to split a single exhaust just after the rear axle, and have dual glasspacks & single tips each, or split the tailpipe to have dual tips.A side effect would be that with enough separation between the two exhaust tips, you could get the wave pulses out of sync, and should be hear what sounds like a dual exhaust, and probably even double RPM, so your 6 cylinder evgine would sound more like a 12 cylinder.
  10. Smaller pipes (or tips) yes, but if you notice from my initial post, two 1 1/2 inch pipes are about the same as one 2 1/4 pipe. I'm not sure if there are any effects ofthe gas going through that need you to adjust the dual pipes any, but since it's not liquid that's flowing, I'd just go with the mathematical equivalent on the areas. Beandip suggests that just a little backpressure will help the engine, so that means if need to err on the diameters, you can go slightly on the smaller side.

Some of that stuff seems to be a requirement, like the braided hose covers on muscle csars. It seems to give the feel of performance to a muscle car, and if the rest of the car is done well, like nice paint, chrome in the right spots, etc., it looks very nice- not rice. But then I see some braided hose covers that make you feel like your looking at panty hose with lots of runs in them. :disappoin

Whichever car you get, you need to look up P.O.R. (Paint over Rust) products, and my favorites EvapORust and DeOxit (D5 & D100.) the POR stuff is used to treat & paint rusty metal items & sheetmetal, EvapORust is used to de-rust smaller parts, nuts, bolts, washers, etc., and eOxit is used to remove corrision from electrical connectors. DeOxit Page: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=341-200&DID=7 POR: http://www.stoprust.net/?gclid=CPPh9abm74YCFQs7UAodHnklAQ EvapOrust: http://www.evaporust.com/ thx

You could probably do the same thing by taping a length of pencils across the bonnet, or some split PVC pipe.:classic:

How about this for the correct way to mount a wing on a front wheel drive car? I'm not that good with photo-chopping, but I think you get the idea. Notice the "park bench" wing on the back of this car. The weoight of the concrete ends wil add at least 400 kilos of downforce!

    It's not even a 280Z...

Did you see the (j/k)? The humor comes from mis-quoting things!:classic: It sounds like your idea of "race car" means you need to go all-out and spend megabux on performance parts & modifications. One good thing about the S30 Z is that it's fairly good at some kinds of competition just as it is. Rice? I think not, because it's a sportscar to begin with, complete with looks, and has some performance equipment already on it stock. If you coax the horsepower & handling of the new car back out, then it's even more fun. Not rice- good maintenence and/or restoration! Show car? Sure! Again, you don't need to drop megabux on it to make it beautiful and ready for a concours show for the first time you go. You do it in bits as you go. At every Z show I've been to so far, I've done well, and the competition is getting tough because everybody else is also fixing things up on their cars. IMO, if it's purposely built and only use for race or show, then you're missing out on the big picture-fun.

Hey, my 280Z is a daily driver & showcar, and I sometimes go auto-crossing with it. Are you suggesting it's rice??? (j/k)In 2008 (during the national meet) we're supposed to go to Mid-Ohio for some laps too. It shows the versatility of the Zed!
  18. You can get the 2 1/4" glasspacks easily, but the tips and the Y would be harder to locate. I think that if anything would effect the backpressure, it would be the resonance holes in the tips, or any baffles in the tips. BTW, when I replaced the whole exhaust a couple years ago, the muffler guy tried a glasspack in for the 'pre-muffler' both normally and backward, and the sound was the same. He claimed it would still be quiet (glasspack on backward) and the flow would still go well. I have no problems with it or the sound.
  19. Sorry, I don't smoke.
  20. Instead of one large single exhaust tip on your muffler, how would dual small trea tips work, if you got the total area of the openings the same as the muffler's outlet? But from what Beandip says, smaller openings may be of an advantage. Data: 2" muffler outlet = 12.6 sq. in. (pi x radius squared, pi = 3.14) 2 1/4" muffler outlet = 15.9 sq. in. 2 1/2" mufler outlet = 19.6 sq. in. dual 1" tips = 6.3 sq. in. dual 1 1/4" tips = 9.8 sq. in. dual 1 1/2" tips = 14.1 sq. in. As you can see, the dual 1 1/2 inch tips have about the same cross-sectional area as the 2 1/4 inch muffler outlet. Either that or how about a Y feeding into dual glasspacks with single tips each? I've never seen glasspacks with small outlets like 1 or 1 1/4" diameter. Either way, it must be correctly done- not riced!

I have a photo of one for a 240Z from a topic here some while back ( I saved it to my hard drive on 4/11/2005). I might consider making one for my 280Z if I could find a photo. I think I saw some bolt holes under there that I didn't recognize- I'll have to go look again. 240z splash pan (don't know the year):

The MR2 was quite a different thing when it cam out. It pretty much still is. I drove one of those 86s for a few days. BTW, was your MR2 in primo condition or the Belaire? (j/k)
  23. What kind of tips are those?
  24. TomoHawk posted a post in a topic in Polls
What do you think about using exhaust tips (dual tips) that have the same total outlet area as the input ( as in 2, 1 1/2 outlets with a 2/1/2 inch inlet, actually 120% bigger outlet, but still 'reasonably small.') Refer to the exhaust section...

That's great, E. Stephan, I got it, but I see so much of that stuff through emails, online, and otherwise that I'm used to it and I'd have to see something really pleasing to notice. I'd still prefer to see my S.O. do something like that instead of (some chick).
