Well... Today is the first day back at school for the local comminity college, and the parking lot is filled with...RICE! I even saw a riced 5.0 Mustang on the way there (only 1.5 miles.) It was pink with clear taillights, flares & skinny tires, and a few bumper stickers on the front chin spoiler. In the parking lot, I saw half a dozen subarus with the huge spoiler, and then a few pontiacs, Honhuhs, and a couple Citations with them too. Not to mention most of the cars in the 'Employee section' didn't have the permit sticker in the window... "There was no other place to park!" they'll say. Next week they'll get cited.
  2. I took the hose off my p.c.v. valve and it had suction but no hiss. Does that mean it's bad? I can get a new one and screw it on, but the current one seems to be stuck on pretty good & won't unscrew easily.thx
  3. You should see what happens on the freeways at the first snowfall! I'll take the streets instead of the freeway if I need to- especially during rush hour.
  4. I'm sure even a new car can get into a jam, but that's probably everybody's goal. A wise man used to have this credo: "Be Prepared."
  5. A 169-piece metric cell phone? Using "a cell phone" for repairs or service for your vehicle is about the alowest way to get something done. A case-in-point would be last weekend at the drive-in theatre. The luxury mini-van parked next to me had a dead battery about 1/2 way through the first movie. the guy called his auto club, and he told me he would have to wait several hours until both movies were finished before a tow truck could arrive to give help. I loaned him my booster cables, and he got a boost from a friend with another luxury car (he thought the luxo-mobile's "bigger battery" would charge his faster...
  6. I got the one about the water tablets. I have a few little bags od dehydrated mineral water in with my camping gear.
  7. I got t he one about the water tablets. At first I thought he ment water purification tablets, or flavor tablets, or possibly jut what it says- just add water. I have a few little bags of dehydrated mineral water in w
  8. I finally got my idea figured out. I have the 6-spoke ZX wheels, so I took the rear hub caps off, and cut around it just under the chamfer, then I sanded it so it was flat, and glued it on the wheel with GOOP. the front will have to stay stock, because the hubs stick out.
  9. I got a case from a cordless drill that I'm putting all t he lose stuff in (water pills, tape, clamps, etc. Tools go in a toolbox, or maybe somebody else can carry a toolbox. These cars are not like a luxo-boat, so you don't have any trunk space, and just enough behind the seat for a gallon of water or a rolled-up something. Even the tool bins aren't big enough to hold much more than jumper cables and a quart of oil. BTW. I didn't see FIRE EXTINGUISHER on anybody's list...
  10. The 280Z has bins behind the seat, but because the front of the deck is crewed down, you'll need tool to get the deck up :surprised
  11. boyblunda- I think that the last time we discussed this, it was about a year ago, and it looks like stuff from that far back is no longer around.
  12. Unless you have a 240Z, how do you get to the tool bins?
  13. I don't know how well the spare air can will keep, but I do know you can get new ones.
  14. Yep, I got a list of things for most on-the-road repairs. I created the list keeping in mind longish (100+ miles) road trips to places or if just travelling away from your own area. Even though some insisted that an auto club card and a phone are ALL that you need, I don't think it is reasonable to have to wait hours for a repair person to find you (if he comes at all) and then do or help with a repair- both which have high rates YOU must pay "on the spot.") The idea was good especially when travelling in groups. The parts could be divided up between cars, and you have more people on the spot immediately, and you can have more of certain supplies- like first aid stuff. Also especially good because some people prefer to not replace certain things which can break down (exhaust, rad & fuel hoses, etc. so just having certain things in the car will get you to a service place where you can fix things propely to get on with travel. Keep in mind some things you'd see on a wilderness survival show, but I thought them small enough or important enough that it just might save your life in a REAL emergency. Also, somthings (like snacks, batteries, radios, etc.) I'll keep in front with me in my personal travel tub.) And some things (chocks, jumper cables) stay in the car all the time. I gave a jump to a guy last night at the drive-in theater (American Graffiti was on), (or he had to wait till ALL the movies ended at 2am for a tow truck. :devious: ) Remember that this list is kinda comprehensive, so some items might be omitted, depending on how 'remote' your destination is or passes through. I think it would be important enough to develop a list of spares (like fuses & bulbs) to carry in the car at all times. This might be specfic to each model of Z. Royblunda- I didn't post this list last year because most people didn't seem serious about the idea ("all I need is a AAA card, a phone and a 45 Auto.") I'm not trying to force people to carry the stuff, but with all these people & experiences, we should have been able to make up a good kit. tire chock(s) ***flares water bag (min. 2 gallon) *water prification pills *(P)food (sealed) (buy fresh) power bars Pop Tarts Bug juice mix? first aid kit help sign fan belts(s) tire repair tool/patches * can of fix-A-flat pvc tape Hose clamps(size(?) 8mm: f.i. type 2 1/2 inch: radiator cable-ties rags/shop towels matches/lighter lightstick(s) rubbing compound (P)A.P. paper ***tow rope/belt $1 in coins ***road triangle(s) 11" ***jumper cables (8ft. min) flashlight strobe light bungee cord(s) poncho work gloves bandana whistle rope Tire pressure gauge 12 volt air pump Vasoline (tube) knee pad qt. of oil can of DOT3 brake fluid plastic trash bag, Medium fuses *Reversable screwdriver hobby scissors multi-function knife space blanket ========================== *Optional *** minimum (P)pack in with clothes

We use mostly 12 & 14 ga wire for electric r/c boat racing, and the better stuff I like has 500+ strands, and can handle 60+ amps at 7 or 9 volts.
  16. I better go check my PCV thingy. The hose feels ok, but the valve is something else. My suggestion is pOD/cOD

Is it good enough to add one running ground wire for all the points you want to get to, or do you thing there should be a web of wires? Like all going back to the battery (-) neg post, or at least to one main bus wire to the battery? BTW, how heavy do you think I should go on ground wires? I have some heavy zip-cord to use for experiments, but I think I would go with 14 or 12 gauge wire for the grounds. All the stores I've been to just have monster cable for speakers. Some guys are using that on their 350Zs. thx
  18. The vacuum advance pot must be adding additional advance to what the mechanical part does. I'm still wondering, in that case, why there are different ones for manual and automatic transmissions, and CA or federal emmissions spec engines. Like Stephen said, there are 6 in all.

The old Ferraris used pop-rivets on the early ducktails.
  20. I spoke with Darryl Reilly before about this, but he has been unavailable lately. I'll keep trying his number. He knows lots of this swell stuff. Stephen- I can't find my engine microfiche file!
  21. That unit is for a MT engine, 75-78, so you think that would work, right? Just making sure. I'd still like to know how much more (or less) advance the MT unit gives versus the AT one. Either way, I hope it will get me back into the power on my L28. thx
  22. I ordered one from MSA, and then BD, and both said they are NLA. That was back in June.
  23. So what is the purpose of the "vacuum advance" unit? If I put a large amount of vacuum on mine, I could see it moving, and rotating, the sensor plate inside the distributor, so it has to be changing the spark timing. Mine must be leaking or worn out, because t barely moves, and won't hold its position without a large & constant amount of vacuum; more than I think is available normally. thx
  24. Do you mean a used one? Can you get them in certain advance rates (curves?) what would be about right? My contact at NAPA tells metere is nada for that engine (75-78, or even 79-83) from any source. What, and how much, difference is there between the MT and AT versions? just total degrees, or what? thx
  25. I need a vacuum advance unit for my 78 L28 dizzy. It's got anautomatic trans. What would work? I'm not looking for an exact match, just need to get the spark a little closer than what the mechanical advance gives. I was thinking of one from an L28 from 79-81 with any trans? thx
