Cars crushed in street racing crackdown
Did everyone miss this? "Nearly 1,000 people — drivers and spectators — have been arrested for investigation of street racing activities over the past two years in San Bernardino County alone. Police need a court order to destroy the cars. They must prove that the serial or identification numbers on a vehicle or its parts are removed, altered or destroyed." Unfortunately, we all have had that import boy racer pull up next to us with his stereo pumping out thunderous offensive music, looking like he just walked off MTV (God I wish that was cool again) and started thinking about were in God's name did a kid that young get all the money that went into his ride? I can't even afford a molded carpet kit for my Z and this kid has more than that wrapped up in just his front left wheel and tire (well that's what I think, maybe not you)! Then you start letting the wheels in your mind start turning, Is he pushing dope, is he part of a gang or simply does he have stupid parents? Now all of these things may be true or totally just part of my jealous fantasy, more likely the second choice, but if when the light turns green and this kid takes off faster than a brides nighty and you come across him and his car twisted around a pole further down the road I know a small part of me gets a really angry about all the wasted talent and money that went into that car no matter what make or model (just like the cherry 69 Camaro some dumbass totaled not too far from my house on Memorial Day Weekend from racing, STUPID PR*CK) and you start thinking serves him right, especially you find out later half of the parts were stolen or bought with drug money. And if the kid worked at McDonald's since he was a freshman in high school it makes me angrier yet. Cause he aint making nowhere as much as me a year and to be that fortunate to be able to sink that much green into his ride and then jepordize it by racing on the street or just driving like the street is his personal track and we're all his opponets he deserves to have his car impounded and crushed. If he got caught picking up hookers in his ride they would take his car or if he was caught pushing dope in it they would take it. Maybe not crush it, but he don't have it anymore. So how is this any different? Wow my mind hurts. Dan

Fuel mixture problem...fpr???
as do we all. However it's the onlyway to get it right. If you drop the tank you can take it to a radiator shop and have them clean it for a fraction of the cost of a new one. I know I said that mine was fixed but some more stuff must come off the inside cuz the symptoms have started rearing their ugly heads again (GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!). A trick I know you'll love to know, 83 and 84 Maximas share a lot of mechanical parts with the Zs. Fuel pumps, injectors, engines, trannies and rear diffs just to name the ones I have found. I know cause I own an 83 Maxima. I jsut recenly stole the 5 speed out of it. It was a direct bolt in, of course the the pressure plate had to go along as well, but you get the idea. And of course if you wanna enjoy that Z while you're stashing dough away, hit the pick and pulls in your area and grab some maxima injectors (look for the dirty crusty ones, chances are they haven't started leaking yet)for about three bucks apiece, drain you tank, tap the drain hole with 1/4" NP and put a 90 degree nipple in the hole. Plug off the stock fuel pipe, use some 3/8'" fuel line with a fram G3 filter inline between the tank and pump. Don't worry about ruining the drain hole with the tap. When you have the tank fixed the drain plug will thread right back into hole and seal like she was never even gone. Oh and be sure to clean the inlet filter of the pump. It's in the inlet nipple of the pump. Keep changing out the fram filters till you get the cash to have the tank cleaned and your baby will run fine. Hope this helps, until later ,bye. Dan

Fuel mixture problem...fpr???
HI Darb, If your car was sleeping for four years you really need to have your fuel tank checked. I know it's an incredible PITA, but it will cause you nothing but trouble as time goes on and as you said your Z is far too pretty to just sit the garage. My 76 ran great when I first got it then the bomb dropped and it was six month ordeal (4 being garaged for winter) before I bit the and dropped the fuel tank. Nothing but a mean growling kitty under the hood now, well sometimes she purrs, but mostly she growls in delight. If your going to change two injectors change them all. 31 year old parts will surely start to fail if you start mixing in new with the old. Good Luck and Good Driving. Dan

New 280z Owner! Anything i should know?
Welcome my friend to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend , step inside step inside. Enigma speaks wisely about the sickness. Prepare yourself for a journey of great magnitude and joy as your condition worsens. I hope they never find a cure, unless it's more injections of Z. Welcome the to world of Z's Darbji!

Cant Figure This Out
I agree with kdmatt, try the fuel tank first then the coil. Same thing happened in my 76 ran around in circles for two months. Got fed up and dropped the tank. I didn't have the cash to have pro cleaned so I got out as much junk as I could and rerouted the fuel feed line to my drain plug hole. I went through about four fram g3 filters before I got all the junk out. Car runs like a champ. You can test this by jacking up drivers side, shake the hell out the back of car let set for five minutes. While leaving the fuel cap on, remove drain plug and drain into a clear container, if you have junk in there you'll see it right away. Then it's up to you how you go from there. Good Luck! I hope you get it figured out cuz a Z that sits, well that's just not right. Dan

Brakes, bearings and bushings
thanks for the info Ron, you would have that p/n would you ?

Brakes, bearings and bushings
No I'm not planning on doing struts. Car rides nice and tight with no bouncies. My wife says she'd rather ride in my truck (90 F-150 4X4) than in my Z. Doesn't hurt my feelings any. The part about it that makes me nervous is getting the peened nuts off the axle stubs. Once I get those off the rest will come apart either quietly or by force. Thanks for the offer with tool, but my guitarist has a buttload specialty tools and will probably do at his place. I just don't want to be heating on the housing for an hour just to get th bearings to let go. Thanks for the replies guys I love this site! Dan

Another Fusible Link Conversion
thanks for the advice. have yet to find battery tiedown but am looking. fusible link is for fuel injection so wouldn't help anyway:surprised. The fusible link block has worked wonders I finally have all the power getting to all the systems properly. I've got more power, lights are brighter, wipers aren't slow anymore and the voltmeter doesn't erratically move between 13 and 16volts. All is great! If you have any info on the proper tie down for the battery I'd be appreciatin' it. Plus I have to fix the rust that 31 years of leaking battery acid has graciously bestowed upon my poor Z's battery tray. So far the bungee is doin fine. Dan

Brakes, bearings and bushings
Hey guys and gals. I'm going to plunge into the unknown and replace brakes, bearings and bushings left to right front to back. It feels like a big job, but after everything else I've done so far, what the hell! right? I've seen some write ups on the rear wheel bearings and I'm a little nervous or am I just being paranoid? Any input would be helpful. Dan

Another Fusible Link Conversion
Hey everybody, Rockr69 here with yet another type of fusible link conversion. The donor car is an 86 Maxima (trying to keep it in the family) I found while cruising my local pull and save. I know its not a maxi fuse type of box, but it works for me and I got a bunch of extra links while i was there. Not that i think I should need them, but who knows? Any way here are the pics. What I really like about this conversion is that it ended up looking bone stock!

tranny swap
and the 76 has the TOP switch in trans to give vacume advance to dizzy in fourth gear. Mine is bypassed giving advance in all gears for perf. Newer 5speed did not have even a boss for this switch. Rockr69

tranny swap
Oh and the only mod for my 76 was to bend the shifter back probably 1-1 1/2" for proper reach! Rockr69

tranny swap
Hey everyone, I just got done with my tranny swap. Total success! I'm not sure if the speedo gear is the same but it's pretty darn close. We're talkin' 95-100 mph in third gear and gas sippin 2100rpm at 60 in 5th. 1st gear is a little lower so frying the asphalt into screaming submission became a lot easier with stock engine. I am having a bit of a clutch problem but was experiencing a little slipping before swap. Tax return is being mailed on Friday so maybe I'll get a better clutch and pressure plate when I redo the wheel bearings and brakes. So all of you out there who were thinkin of swappin a 5 speed into your pre-zx cars, check out your local wrecking yards for maximas (actually they have a ton of cool parts if you want fab them in your z), 810s and pickups for those five speeds. required measurements are: front of tranny to center of crossmember-21 1/4", and from front of tranny to output shaft housing-right at 31". Good luck and enjoy your Zs. Rockr69
