  1. Thanks Phred, I appreciate your information. I want to end up with a fun sports car I can use on Sundays. I have had the car since 74 in stock condition (lowered,5 speed, exhaust)and enjoy driving it. I am working with a speed orientated machine shop and want to make this head breath as much as possible. There is about .040 clearance from the edge of the combustion chamber to the gasket which does not seem to leave much room to unshroud the valves. Has this worked for you? It should have 10.25:1 compression with this setup before decking the head and block so I am not adverse to lowering the compression. I have not decided on a cam but am considering a 260/280 cam reground for this motors specs. I am going to use the SUs with Ztherapy needles and jets. Any other suggestions?' Regards Bob M
  2. I am rebuilding an E31 head using 280 valves. The stock 280 head gasket does not give enough clearance to properly unshroud the valves. Is there an aftermarket head gasket that has a larger bore than the stock 280? I am going to use the head on an F54 block and will champher the bores as well. I know several people have used this combination and I would appreciate any knowledge they gained from their experience. Regards Bob M
  3. Thanks for the info on the chrome tape. I am looking for a solution myself and found a plastic chrome strip for the side of a car that is the correct width and is very durable. It also looks great. The problem is removing the blue base and attaching this instead. I don't want to ruin my panels but I pryed one edge of the fabric up to see how the blue strip was attached and could not see enough. Does anyone know how to remove the blue plastic? BTW I understand the base strip came in blue and another color, I believe white. Bob M
  4. Can you tell me the email address for these figures? I am in the process of building a 280 motor and am interested their recommendations. Thanks Bob M
  5. I am rebuilding an F54 lower end and will use an E31 head. The timing chain sets have different part numbers for the 240 and 280 motors. I know this is a common installation so perhaps someone can tell me what they used for the timing set. Thanks Bob M 72 240z
  6. I am rebuilding an E31 head with larger valves, etc. I am wondering if it is possible to use a later model cam and drill oil passages in the head. Anyone had any experience? Thanks Bob M

I have friends who say they had their 70/71 zs to 135mph. The only change from stock was a front air dam for handling. I was at Bonneville in 02 and the top speed for a Z was 169mph. I am not sure what the rules are for modifying the car but I spoke with a guy that had a 280 motor in his 240z and was hoping to go 170mph. He did not make it at that time. Bob M
