New here, former ZX owner
That's a sad story, but hopefully with luck, you'll be able to find another Z car when you are able to take care of it. Older cars can be problematic; but can be so rewarding. Regarding the toyota, I think that particular model of Supra was the best of the bunch, and wouldn't mind finding a nice one myself for daily driver duty. Anyway, welcome to the site, by the way, have you checked out our Classified section for a new Z?

won't rev past 2250!
First of all, Welcome to the club! A question-did you happen to check the condition of the inside of your gas tank? Odds are that you've got some crud in there that is getting sucked into the system. To get to your tank, here is what you do- 1. lift up the padding in the hatch area. You will see a circle with two screws. open it up. 2. now you will see the top of the tank, with three tubes and hoses, surrounded by 8 screws. 3. Carefully unscrew them (they are small and easy to drop). Unfasten the hoses, and disconnect the plastic wire connection thing. 4. Carefully pull the sending unit from the tank. Do this slowly, there are tubes and things going everywhere, it can be a pain. 5. Look inside, see all the rust. If your tank is gunked up, odds are that that is the problem. do a search on the site, and you will find lot's of information.

my rear supension is to soft
Upgrade your struts and springs. When I purchased my 79, she would sit back on her haunches when I hit the gas. This, while entertaining, was not acceptable, so I chose the Tokico Blue struts as my replacements (I kept the factory springs). Now keep in mind that I don't race-but I do drive on very curvy roads everyday, and have been very pleased with the control my setup gives me-very communicative and predictable. You may want to look into upgrading your springs as well- for this sort of stuff, you will find much more information over at www.Hybridz.org

Welcome to the forums, Gene- Let's see some photos of your babies! I checked your profile, and see that you've got 2 ZX's-just so you know, there aren't too many of us here (most find their way over to hybridz.org ), and this site is generally aimed at the pre-zx model. But do not fear! There is quite a lot of information that applies equally to our model, you just have to "search" for it; and quite a lot of people who are willing to help out.

Raw Gas Smell
First of all, congratulations on spreading Z word! Now, down to business- If I were in the garage with you, I would start by looking at the fuel line connnections (always start with the easiest thing). How old are the fuel lines? perhaps one has cracked (or ruptured). I know nothing of carbs, so I'll not even hazard a guess, but I do remember a thread about a raw gas smell coming from the mechanical fuel pump w/faulty linkage, or some such.

My Truck Artical (Photo Edit Help Needed)
I was looking around for some photo editing programs and found this one http://graphicssoft.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=graphicssoft&cdn=compute&tm=22&gps=360_573_1020_609&f=11&su=p284.5.420.ip_&tt=3&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/ It was developed at Washington State University, and has many cool features. It's got "outline," "redeye reduction" (fun for red cars), and many others. Just thought I'd share. The trippy colored one was accomplished with "adjustment"-"hue/saturation" If you are curious about how your car would look in a different color, this is the one you want to fiddle with.

A question for the EFI guys
That's not a stupid suggestion at all-I've almost had the same thing happen to me-the guy at NAPA was more concerned about the conversation he was having on his phone than in the customer (me), and tried selling me carb only fuel line. It happens.

$1200 bucket'o'rust
Found this on ebay, could be a good parts car, though the seller wants to get out of it what he's got in itROFL , which is $1200. Somehow, I don't think he'll get it, especially since there is no engine, and the rust monster, of course... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-Datsun-240Z-Maroon-with-moonroof_W0QQitemZ150091140156QQihZ005QQcategoryZ6187QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem from the ad...

VEI Digital Instruments
They are pretty pricey, don't you think? Speedometer V1-SPM-LR (Red display, MPH): $139 Tachometer V1-TAC-LR (Red display): $129 Water temp V1-WTF-MR (Red display): $69 Oil pressure V1-OPM-MR (Red display): $69 Gas gauge V1-FQM-MR (Red display): $69 Clock V1-DCC-MR (Red display): $59 Voltmeter V1-VOM-MR (Red display): $69 +________________________________ Total for a set of red gauges (not all blue prices were listed) $603 OUCH Also, I wonder how "easy" they would be to program for our cars, and what sort of rewiring would be needed, if any.

Exhaust tailpipe ideas
Mike, what is the diameter of your Harley pipe? I would be surprised if your local (motor)bike shop didn't have something that would work for the Z-might be worth checking into...FWIW.

Does this mean you're a "gearhead"? Once you get it back, will you be levelheaded? Sorry, I couldn't resist

Things to do in Phoenix?
I might suggest renting a car, then driving around looking for rust free Z's that you can help raise from the ashes of disrepair and neglect.

280z(automatic) PEEL OUT
Ah, yes, the old power brake method. To perform a really good power brake peelout, you need two things: 1) enough torque. 2) enough money to buy a new transmission. If you want a car that can do burnouts, a mid 90's mustang would be a better choice-it's got an engine w/enough grunt, and replacement parts are cheap(er) and easy to come by. Sorry, I'm not picking on you, just being a little cynical. Some cars do better with all out shows of power, and do really well in straight lines. Other cars show superiority elsewhere, namely in stability and agility. You've got one of the latter, IMO. But really, if you do too many "neutral drops" (neutral+Gas, drop to drive), you will be needing a new tranny sooner than later, and most likely new motor mounts; and if you continue with the power brake, well, there are many things that can go wrong, especially with such old components.

Considering buying #237 - Need Advice
OK, it makes sense now. I saw the coil of wires over there-just didn't know what it was for. My concern was that someone had been running the Z around w/o any fan whatsoever thus bringing the health of the engine into mind.

Considering buying #237 - Need Advice
Am I blind, or is it missing its fan blade? (bottom photo) Other than that, looks good.

ebay - this part does(n't) work on our cars!
Wait a second-Ebay is the "middle man," and they are the supplier. The cost is inflated to some degree, since the juice company pays ebay listing costs. And no, they don't tell you what it will do. Just hook it up to any sensor you want, and it will work.

spare parts disease
Sounds like you need to move to a larger house, one with a four car garage! That would solve the problem, at least for a while.

Fuel injection chip?
Here's a link to the book TomoHawk mentioned. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/efisystem/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf It's in PDF, so it may take a little bit to load, but it's definately worth saving to file. Before you go over to Oliver, try to figure it out for yourself. You'll be saving yourself some money ($500!), and you'll be learning about your car.

Mistaken/ficticious/humorous identities
WHO IS JACK SCHITT? For some time many of us have wondered just who Is Jack Schitt? We find ourselves at a loss when someone says, 'You don't know Jack Schitt!' Well, thanks to my genealogy efforts, you can now respond in an intellectual way. Jack Schitt is the only son of Awe Schitt. Awe Schitt, the fertilizer magnate, married O. Schitt, the owner of Needeep N. Schitt, Inc. They had one son, Jack. In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt. The deeply religious couple produced six children: Holie Schitt, Giva Schitt, Fulla Schitt, Bull Schitt, and the twins Deep Schitt and Dip Schitt. Against her parents' objections, Deep Schitt married Dumb Schitt, a high school dropout. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Schitt divorced. Noe Schitt later married Ted Sherlock, and because her kids were living with them, she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Schitt Sherlock. Meanwhile, Dip Schitt married Loda Schitt, and they produced a son with a rather nervous disposition named Chicken Schitt. Two of the other six children, Fulla Schitt and Giva Schitt, were inseparable throughout childhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony. The wedding announcement in the newspaper announced the Schitt-Happens nuptials. The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd, and Horse. Bull Schitt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world. He recently returned from Italy with his new Italian bride, Pisa Schitt. Now when someone says, 'You don't know Jack Schitt,' you can correct them. Sincerely, Crock O. Schitt

Cold Start Valve will not turn off/close
Well, I drove @25 miles to school today with the Cold Start Valve disconnected. Upon arrival I popped the hood to check for gas leakage, and there was none. Odd thing-it was in the lower twenties when I started the car, and she started right up and idled/ran very nicely. I was under the impression that the CSV was to assist in exactly that sort of situation.

early 240z brake master cylinder
I agree with Arne, rebuilts are iffy. The brakes were starting to fail on my previous car (92 Accord), so I took it to my usual shop, where they installed a rebuilt master cylinder from carquest. Tech went for a spin, came back, threw it back on the lift and ordered another one. The rebuilt replacement was bad straight out of the box. If you can find a "new" one, go for it, your life depends on it.

Cold Start Valve will not turn off/close
Thanks Stephan, I'll check the continuity in the morning. You're right about blowing at 37 psi, but I don't think the valve is leaking, solely for the fact that when I removed it, it was dry, while the pcv valve was wet. Anyway, I'll dig deeper into the situation and keep all informed.
