TV series "Wrecks to Riches"
I watched this series last year, but can't remember which network. It was a first class shop, and very well produced. Always the drama of a strict timeline. I really enjoyed the "Barry White screwdriver rust finding technique." Not many of our cars would pass that test, but a few would. Bonzi Lon

Exterior Body
My 73 came with them and they fell apart in my hands when I took the buckets off. At the time (before CZCC) I knew I needed something there because of painted metal to painted metal to reduce chips. I made my own out of a tire inner tube. Made a paper templet, paper hole punch for the screws. They fit tight when finished, shows loose fit. Then the thread came up about not really needing them, but already had them made, so used them. Looks very much like it did before, black seal between parts, with careful trimming. Bonzi Lon

The restoration has begun
You do have a project. By the way, those wheel covers (hub caps) are worth some nice coin. Do a little search on "D style" wheel covers/hub caps for further information. Good Luck, keep us posted on the progress. What is your intended color? Bonzi Lon

i screwed up.. please help
I used the dupli-color "graphite", but it seemed too glossy so I covered it with a clear matt finnish. Tail finishers, wheel covers and grill got the same treatment. Very close to original, at least for me. Bonzi Lon

Whew finally back to having a computer and time for this...
The engine number will be on the passenger side of the block on the 2 flat pads between cylinder #5 & 6. The engine number that came with the car will be on the I.D. plate on the side of the passenger shock tower. The month and year the car was made will be on the driver's door jam. The true and actual VIN will be stamped above the brake booster on the firewall. I know what you mean by the PO "fixing" things. I had a 72 where the entire sound system was installed with dry wall screws, about a pound of them. Bonzi Lon

Engine ID
I'll muddy the waters some more. HLS30-00110 built 12/69 has engine #2796 on the shock tower plaque. Not in close sequence to others of this age. From what I have read that if a car had a problem of quality on the line it was removed and repaired to specs later. The plaque (with engine #) did not get added until everything was in good working order and was then passed as OK. Bonzi Lon

Put OIL in Strut housing or NOT?
I've been reading Z car forums for 3 years now and every time this comes up the answer is always "an ounce or two of motor oil, do not overfill." (For stock applications not exotic setups) Bonzi Lon

1968 Datsun SPL311
I got mine a year ago this month, what a fun little car. I paid about 20% more than your trade, and I consider I got a good deal. Not many antique Japanese sports cars in this area. I agree with driving it before doing anything major. The stares and comments are great. The most common word I hear is "cute". I haven't noticed any stress cracks in the trunk area. The 2 volume "The Datsun Roadster Book" will be very valuable for info and part numbers, $88 and worth every penny. This Datsun is not a unibody, it sits on a very heavy frame so you can do a 'body off frame' restoration. The smile begins when you first lay eyes on it, once you drive it, forget about it. Bonzi Lon

Dashboard Preservation?
I have always used water and a soft cloth on my uncracked dash. Storing it 28 years out of sunlight helped also. Bonzi Lon

Shifter Bushing
If they didn't come with instructions, little lube, press them in with a vice, side at a time, do not hammer them in. I used a very strong magnet near the cir-clip to catch the flying part. Worked well with instalation also, dropped it 3 times, went to the magnet, not the floor. Bonzi Lon

Wire colors / tach
This has some good information, http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28449&highlight=pertronix+ballast+resistor. It appears you leave out the ballast resistor if using Pertronix. I thought you still had the point system. Bonzi Lon

Runs great after 18 years asleep!
The resurection of my 73 was like yours except mine sat for 28 years between fireings. Your right, what a fun day that was. Bonzi Lon

Stupid Question- Draining SU Crabs oil
I have several different sized syringes (without needles), found at the drug store, I use around the shop. The smallest is 2cc, perfect for fitting into the carb top opening, and pre-measured at 2cc for putting oil back in. The larger 20cc are used for brake and clutch masters so not to run old fluid through the lines or make a mess, sucks them dry. The largest ones can be fitted with a tube, also at drug store, for topping off or filling the tranny and diff. And many other applications. Bonzi Lon

1973 Console Question
ConchZ, my 7-73 choke label is about the same shape as yours, however I can barely see the 'hok' now. It was readable in 77 but not like the perfect example 2 fast 2 Z shows, thank you for that photo. Bonzi Lon

New member intro
Welcome Jusjofok: I'm just a half hour west, great distance for a shake down cruise, for either of us. The Branson Z Fest is the end of May, something to shoot for as Cousin David and I are going. We also have a few toys, between us a dozen Nissans, mostly Z's. He just picked up a 69 Patrol with 38K. Will send a PM when I get off work. Bonzi Lon

Finding my old car
- The L28 and Nitrous
My feelings about nitrous has always been, "its just a button for destruction." Bonzi Lon- Rear Hatch Louvers
The Interpart louvers have a rubber bumper on each slat, (1980) and that is a funky key. Its funny that when I bought HLS30-00110 it came with the very same louvers without the key. Here are the rest of the New Old Parts from 1980. Quarter louvers, quick steering knuckles, electric window motors, rear 3 piece spoiler (sold), front spook w/ducts and rear louvers. I haven't made up my mind what parts should go on, if at all. Bonzi Lon- Rear Hatch Louvers
- act your age. Wait no... Post your age
I was a 14 year old gas station attendant in 1970. The rich kid in high school got a new Z for graduation, so to show it off he smoked the tires on the lot. I was impressed. First import that I saw do this, and so cool looking to boot. In 1977 I spotted my 73 on a used car lot and bought it on the spot, ($2600 and my Ford 4X4) with a phone call to my banker. Drove it until 1980, had the engine rebuilt at the dealership. A friend talked me into a piant job, (for money he owed me) so he got up to primer then quit, didn't get my money either. No cash to finish so put in storage until 2006 when I got an intrest to get it out of storage and refurbished it for antique status in 2008, and did. I turn 54 in July, but the strange thing is, every time I'm behind the wheel of my Z, it is 1979 and I am 24. Bonzi Lon- Fold Up Car Trailer
I think the canvas covered one would work fine. No one would want to break into it if it had graphics on the side stating "Stewart & Sons Sewer Sucking Service". Bonzi LOn- Engine Compartment Air Ducts
I need a set for my 73. Every time I touch them another piece breaks off. They are useless now. I need a new set for summer to go with the 2-80 air-conditioning. 2 windows down - 80 mile-an-hour. Bonzi Lon- Branson Z fest 2009 Whos in?????
You can count on Cousin David and myself to be there. Bonzi Lon - The L28 and Nitrous
