I know this is pretty basic, but is there a way of checking the function of the door drains without opening up the interior panels?

Open the door, and get down on the ground so that you can look up along the bottom edge of the door. You should see 3-4 round holes near where the door skin is folded onto the frame. Get a good stiff piece of wire and clean out any gunk that may be clogging them up.
