Repro sun visors -- transfer entire mechanism?

Featured Replies

I am restoring my 1970 to the blue interior it shipped with. It got all black interior during a refurb around 1980. The sun visors I ordered do not have the little tightening bolt. They do have a metal frame in there, and can receive the thick L bar from the sun visor mount. However, the tightness can't be adjusted, so one of mine is pretty floppy. (they also don't have the little slot where the limiter nub on the sun visor mount slips into, but that's less important I think).

I'm debating cutting open the top of the new visors, and replacing the hardware entirely with the hardware from the old black visors. Has anyone done this? It seems straightforward except I'm not sure what adhesive will be strong enough to hold the top together again. I think it was heat-sealed together.

Hey.

Several years ago, I went through your situation. The supplier (DI) was never able to provide visors with the correct internal hardware. Ultimately, I ended up with two sets, so I felt I could cut open one set and try to correct them. I did carefully cut along the seam and replace the hardware with the correct frame. I spent weeks trying to re-glue the cut. It does not look great, but it is mostly hidden. I plan to sell my 3/71 soon and will give the buyer a backup set of visors.

It was frustrating to have this issue. I tried an auto upholstery guy and a shoe shop to see if they could handle the resealing process. No help.

Good Luck

Hmm. That gives one pause. Thanks for sharing info. When you were trying to seal it, which glues did you use, if you remember? So I can skip those... I was thinking maybe WeldWood, maybe plastic model cement (it kind of melts plastic), maybe superglue? Don't feel confident about any of those.

Maybe the top could be glued, and then sewn together with a stronger blue colored thread. Didn't have learning to sew on my bingo card.

I mostly used super glue but tried other products. Clamping while drying was challenging. I used paper clamps and paper clips. The original seam was heat sealed.

When I opened them up, I removed some of the stuffing. They were overstuffed anyway. If you try sewing them, the material will pull apart under any strain. I did use some thread to position the two sides for gluing. As I already posted, I spent months tweaking the seams.

You might try a fabric store and look for a similar shade of blue and use fabric glue to bond it.

I did contact the vendor and ask to buy some material and just have my local auto reupholster do it right. I got no response.

I went through this five years ago and communicated directly with the vendor. Too bad the vendor is still shipping product that does not fit.

Sorry to be such a 'downer'.

Good Luck,

No man, thanks for sharing that info. Seriously. I will try another route before I go down that path. The sad thing about it is I don't think it would have been much work to include that tightener screw. The rest of the setup is pretty good.

BTW, the tightening screw is part of the internal frame. So, putting in the right hardware will give you the tightening screw.
