Can I hook the clock directly to a car battery to test? Is it positive to the black, and negative to the blue wires?

It operates on 12 VDC, so yes, you can connect it direct to the battery.

Black is usually negative, but I don't have a wiring diagram to look at here at work. Verify correct polarity before you test it.

Black is definitely negative.
