Given the other history you've provided, start searching for damage to the red wire coming out of the switch and going to the fuse box. Look carefully for damaged/burned connectors.

I'll give it a look tomorrow, there are a few splices near the center console where the radio was... oddly the PO had some switch in the large square near the hazard / defog switches..

There is a red wire coming from that area.. hmm i'll have to take a look
