Loud Clunking Noise Upon Putting In Reverse

Featured Replies

When i put my 1983 280z in reverse i hear a loud clunk from the rear of the car i dont think it is the gears but a mount of some sort any ideas????.

1. Diff mount shot

2. Diff strap shot

3. Half shaft universals shot

I'd place a bet on the mount and strap being stuffed. Cheap to replace and not to hard either. Get them from MSA and fit them yourself.

Chaddy, if you put a floor jack under the diff. and watch it when you raise the car, it it moves first before the car starts to rise. It is the diff mount. It could be the u-joints also, so have a close look at them . There should be zero play in the u-joints. Gary

If you know the OEM part numbers they're about $20 cheaper each than MSA or Courtesy Nissan. here

It looks like the S130 had a better mounting setup than the S30. No strap and what appears to be an easier to change insulator.
