a few weeks ago i came across the mutilated shells of about 4 Z's. most had been picked over pretty well. one, however, was an early gen 300Z that had the drivetrain still intact, although i do not know the condition of said drivetrain. i was thinking though, if i could pick this shell up for, oh, say, just about nothing, it would be worth checking out.

my only concern would be if there are any physical reasons why i couldn't install the 3.0L/5-speed and later diff in my '73? providing nothing in the drivetrain has experienced a catastrophic failure, it seems like a really cheap and easy way to pick up quite a bit of gain with no apparent downside.

Sounds like it could work to me. You just need to make sure that all the suspension can bolt onto whatever you pull out of the 300ZX.

Are you talking about a Z31 or a Z32? The SOHC engines in the Z31 fit much easier than the larger DOHC ones from the Z32. I have heard that the steering column / shaft has fitment issues.

none of the suspesnion from a Z31 will fit in a S30 Z.

Diff will fit if you get the R200 mounting hardware from a 280Z.

You'd need custom engine mounts made. not sure about the postion of the sump on a VG30, so you may need a custom one. Also you may need to have a drive shaft made up. And hafl shafts may be a problem too.

it is a SOHC, at least it looks just like the 2.4L that's in the car now, except for the FI manifold. hence, why i thought it would be such a straight forward install.

Sounds like it is a L28 from the 280ZX, which is a straight 6 as the engines from both 300ZX generations are V6s. From my understanding the L28 from the 280ZX is a direct bolt in.

thanks for the info, pete. i thought it still had a '300Z' logo on what was left of the interior. but it was pretty much trashed by the time i found it.

maybe i will call around and see if i can figure out which yard picked it up.
