Is there any way to tell if a 78 Z shipped from the factory with a 4 or 5 speed?

Not that I know of. The five speed was an option. Unless you have the invoice there's no real way to tell if it came with one. Even the 5 speed hatch emblem seemed to be randomly put on the cars with 5 speeds. Mine is an original 5 speed car, according to the original owner, with the emblem and a friend of mine has an original 5 speed car w/o the emblem. He even has the invoice that shows that the five speed was included.

Same here Stephen. My '78 280Z is an original 5 speed with no emblem.....
