To increase the performance of my 1972 Z car is an engine/tranny swap from a later model Z a good idea or should I just have the current engine rebuilt and add a 5 spd? What later model Z's engines/transmissions would fit without modifications to my car?

All through the 280ZX will drop right in. There is no replacement for Cubic Inch Displacement :)
