Well it all checked out sept the pressure..I decided to "rebuild" the pump now I got no psi at all...but it runs with a nice sound the mount was very loose, and now it's snug..but no psi ...at all Tank is full to the neck and either it won't prime, or is is done.....I wept..

I just got done checking...noone put the filter back. The car is only running 30-34 psi and it goes down below 30 when the throttle is @ around 2500
-
Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
problem seems to cycle..it just went through one of those 30 down to 20 backfire spells..the as it bottomed out at 20psi..with me feathering it..it powered to 34 and runs great...

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
if I hold the throttle at about 2500-2800 the fuel gauge settles at 29-30, earlier it was continous 34

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
oh and as I typr it's running at 32...a little rough, and when I stomp it..it goes down to 28-30 and hesitates real bad....then idles back at 32 though rough

Okay here's fuel pressure readings....34 constant at idle...42 while reving...30 as the trouble starts...20 and then recovery, back to 34..

Okay, Replace the temp.sensor and #6 cyl. inj. connectors. ..didn't help, but the symptoms are very clear, and are happening in a particular way. Start car (cold) runs great, car warms...runs great, idles great etc, then (for reasons unknown)idle begins to flutter, it begins to have hesitation, bog, followed by backfire as I begin to stump it, and feeather it and pump it....right after this begins I notice that the whine from the fuel pump has stopped..I hear the engine continue to stublbe, backfire etc...finially it starts to clear, the engine revs up, and once again I hear the whine of the fuel pup..idle is back to normal again The whine always goes shortly after the symptoms begin...and is alwys back when they stop. Also, If I turn on the lights, or hazzards or heater blower..I can hear a big change in the whine's pitch..so voltage to it really but be getting tweked. It the hazzards are on you can really see em dim the dash lights as they blink. Anyhow the above is exactly the sequence it follows everytime. And it never does it below operating temp., while the mix is fat.

I know the contacts there are clean, But the connector does not look too good., Infact there could be an arch at that location, the connection is tight..but the connector may not seperate the two sides...would this allow for an intermittant (spell) problem? HMMM You know the connections all look good save this one connection...What exactly is it's function..I'm reading the manual at the link you provided...make sure I'm getting very simple english..and please act like I'm four, because this is nre to me, and I won't be offended.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! ! I can tell you it does hold pressure..how much I'm not sure, but I can tell you I learned a tough lesson the first time I changed the fuel filter..ba boom! Glad no spark or open flame were present. I was wondering about the thermotime sensor...and the (I'm not sure of the termonology here) fuel temp sensor. The onlt thing I can even remotly notice resembles a reoccouring event is that It always runs good when it is cold, and the fuel is really abundant..It runs good at temp. What I notice is that right around the time the temp gauge shows the thermostat should be opening is when I have this problem, and right after it should be closing it begins to subside...It could be just imagination, But it always seems to be around that point.

Fprgot to say it will idle all day long with only a brief stumble from time to time...How loud should the fuel pump be, because I can really hear this baby whirring...almost moaning..

"Just remember when you want to kill it you got it for 5 bills, then take a deep breath and let's think about this, after all it's not rocket science, maybe voodoo but not rocket science. So basically it acts like its running out of gas intermittently? almost like a vapor lock but not? If the fuel pressure is flucuating ie, pump eratic, that would cause your lean condition? How about idle? Will it sit there and idle great all day? Have you pulled one plug wire off at a time while its running and listend for any change in speed, sound, etc? Each plug wire off causes the same change? Could also be a weak spark every now and then. A weak coil/spark will have same symptoms as running out of gas. Plug wire breaking down? Crack in dist cap arching every now and then. Turn off all the lights in the garage at night, run engine, look for arching. Report back." Here's what my sea doo guys have to say about it...Just though I'd add it to show you that no matter what you intrest, man in general, think about their toys and how to make em run in almost the same way.

It aint good if it has you stumped...

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Well It is still having fits. It'll run like a top, then get to where it's bogging, then backfire throught the breather, then if I get the throttle down..and start pumping it will begen to clear, bog pop bog pop...then it clears and runs great...then the same thing over again...It does seem to puff off some blue smoke when ever it goes through this....I'm stumped..It's like it loads up heavy and starts to preignite...once nursed through it..it seems fine??? Got the louvers on today and the rest of my trim...need to install the logos, and rear interior next..

Wake up midwest!
I'm just looking for a few cars to go pick at when spring comes.I like the idea of having extra parts laying round. Early to mid 70's cars mainly. I'm gonna hit the water drysuit in hand this weekend,,near 70 sat here in Indy,,way to warm to hibernate...come on spring indeed.

okay man, I'm gonna do it, not just because you have been so spot on with this stuff, but because it just sounds like a cool fun thing to do.. I'm all over it like hot pants on a cheerleader..I'll let you know how it does. I decided to take a night off of Z work..gotta keep the wife and kids on my side, plus it's gonna be near 70 here on Saturday, so I'm either riding the ski with the drysuit on, or putting some miles on the Z...I need the blessing.
