  1. orlando florida, but do you think it could be a problem with the cam/valvetrain setup thats in there?
  2. hey update, i pulled the head off, and naturally, not a single score mark on the pistons....any of them...so now i dont know what the problem is...any other things i should check? my oiler tube in the head is pretty messed up, could that be causing this? i'm at a loss now... steve
  3. yah i'm not going to, and when i did run it i only ran it for like 30-40 seconds, i'm just waiting for some time so i can yank the head off again and see whats up...
  4. i was doing a headgasket on my car and when i reassembled it, i had it timed way wrong, like 30-40 degrees retarded, problem is, i didn't catch it, and i went to try and start it, obviously didnt' start. so i retimed it and now it runs, but with a terrible top end noise, i'm thinking i just pulled a stupid mistake and just bent all the valves or at least some. i suppose everyone makes these type of idiot mistakes at least once. but info on the car, it's an L28 block with an E88 head with flat top P79 pistons and an unknown CWC cam...so either way, the head is coming back off to check for bent valves, but in the meantime...as i've never bent a valve before, what sort of noise would it produce? my motor, just sounds like a decently loud thunking in the head that varies with engine RPM, and a refusal to idle...but any insight anyone can offer would help. thanks oh and try not to make fun of me for my lack of "L" series knowledge... steve
  5. i had one of them off today, 40 DCOE, and it seems like there is a large amount of fuel seapage in the venturi area, can these guys leak? i thought there was only one possible gasket on them? or am i wrong? and where might i look for a rebuild kit? steve..
  6. it actually has an electric fuel pump, so the mechanical one is not at fault..but as far as the SU's, there really isn't that many 'Z' people that i know around me, how much does a set with the manifold run thereabouts? but yah i'm under the impression that the motor has one job, and it's to run at WOT all the time and be happy doing it, the street is not where it's supposed to be, or so it seems, it has improved after i installed a thermostat, of which it didn't have, so now it can warm up at least. so it can definately be a product of running too rich right? steve
  7. the motor is a l28 bottom end with a l24 head with a big cam and some high compression pistons. it has triple 40mm webers, with unkown jetting, i got the car like this, so it's hard for me to try and figure out what is wrong or where i need to go with tuning. but anyways, my oil is visually thinner and smells of gas, so my first reaction is, much too rich, rich enough to soak the cylinders with gas, and to seep past the rings into the pan. second thought is that the rings are flat out bad, haven't compression tested it, just brainstorming. and i'm also burning it a little, no doubt because it's so thin... but my thinking is that with an unknown camshaft with unknown pistons, and jetting that could be way far off, would it be wiser to just ride this motor out as long as i can, and be putting together a very mild rebuilt l28 of my creation to drop in there, one that i know all the specs on, or am i better off figuring out the one i have now? half of me wants to just rebuild my own motor so i can eliminate the guesswork, fuel inject it with megasquirt and TWM throttles, and just call it a day, but there is just a certain attraction to carbs, i'm just not very good at them. any suggestions/critiques/guidance would be great...thanks steve
  8. awesome, thanks for the website, also though, does anyone have any pictures of the way the linkage is supposed to look? either stock or with a cable setup..i'm pretty new to this car, and i'm having a hard time envisioning how it's supposed to look up by the firewall...
  9. thanks for the info guys, but i just did some more looking into it and it seems like it's just running absolutely too rich, i'm not losing any oil on the dipstick, so that is solved, and i'm not losing any coolant, sort of a relief really, now that i know it's only fuel. but the thing with the linkage is that it's some sort of rigged linkage on there, not the one that should be at all, so i'm looking to see if i can convert it or if i can buy all the parts to bring the linkage back to spec...
  10. i recently acquired a 72 240z with a built l28 in it, car is great but the car has triple webers on it, and the throttle linkage binds up when i try to give it throttle. i'm looking for one of two things, a fancy solution of bellcranks and such, or in my eye, the simpler route, perhaps a little help trying to figure out how to convert the car to a throttle cable as apposed to cranks... i am also curious as i am getting heavy white smoke under throttle, but i recently did some work on the valve seals and had the cylinders aired up, and didn't notice really any leakdown...but i'm assuming it's the rings, saying i go and do a proper test of the leakdown/compression, what sort of numbers should i be looking for?
