Thanks to Russell for your all of your assistance. I pulled the radiator to gain better access to the pulley wheel. The two 10mm bolts were missing and the center bolt was backed out almost an inch. I was able to remove the bolt by hand, only to find that the damper washer was missing. I will order that today.

I have recently purchased '72 240 with a '73 engine. I noticed a rattling sound and found that I have an additional wheel in front of the wheel comming out of the engine that does not have a belt on it. (Possibly for an AC unit thet the 72 doesn't have) This wheel is very loose, but not loose enough to pull off by hand. My question is this; How is it supposed to be attached? A center bolt? There are also two holes that line up with two nipples on the wheel that connects to the engine. Are those possibly screw holes. And would it be better to just remove it? Or does it act as a counterbalance? I am not a mechanic by any stretch. This is my daily driver so before I pull the radiator for access I was wondering what is supposed to hold this on. Or if it comes off while driving is it going to wreak havok on my fan belt and radiator. Any help would be much appreciated. I have included a photo.
  3. You could always go with the Zapp Z look. To me this is some of the coolest looking racing stripes ever. I don't think I would ever go that route, but if I did it would look like this. I modified this one slightly from the original. I didn't like how the black faded to the sunburst rainbow colors.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will tune it up this weekend. That needs to be done regardless. However, my instinct tells me my air/gas mix is off. It will spatter gas out the tailpipe when cold and choked. The fumes are pretty intense as well. I am going to try and get my hands on a air flow meter and follow the advice on tuning carbs from one of the old threads. I'll get back here with my findings.

I am new here. I owned an '80 ZX model in High School and parted with it in college for some stupid reason. I finally found a 240 I was in love with and I am in the process of restoring it. I have been reading these forums all weekend and have found many solutions to problems that I have been having with my '72. The search engine has been very helpful. Since this is my first restoration project, and first experience with SU carbs I have a lot to learn. One thing I wasn't able to find in the search was where to sniff out backfiring problems. I'm honestly not sure where to start. I replaced one of the hoses on the carbs that was blocked, which helped, but I was wondering if this could even be an exhaust problem. If this is a stupid question my apologies in advance, but I don't want to replace the entire exhaust system if it's not necessary. Thanks, D
