74 260z distributor on wrong ??
What type of 3 Prong with screw down terminal generic ballast can I find at an auto store? Can I test it with the 2 prong one?

here is a shot from the 260 fsm shown here.. i think i have mine hooked up like this.. also.. the wire with power was the black white hooked up to left of ballast closest to front of car --

ok... that is something to check .. i never knew there was a wire under there - thought it was a solid block... i have this one.. will it work?? only two prongs on this one.. came with coil,,,, my balast resistor did get pretty toast when trying to start car..

here is a video using the test light... why no power out of balast? https://photos.app.goo.gl/wTuyQYuAueTwDbvU9 coil.MOV

i just watched a video i did of checking for power at the coil area.. power goes to one side of the balast but does not come out the other side and does not get power to the coil.. is that correct???

ya - im on it.. i will get the photo and let you analyze what you see... once i do this one time i will know for next time.. 🙂

ok - so what is the maximum amount of times i may have to spin engine to get tdc for piston #1 -- whats the answer to that so i know what i am dealing with - i know i can be a i bit repetitive at times... but im learning here and still abit unclear about where each piston is at each rotation.. if the answer is 2 - i have already shown photos of where the dizzy lands at both.... so i assume it could be more then 2??
-
74 260z distributor on wrong ??
And this could take up to 4 full rotations???
-
74 260z distributor on wrong ??
Ok - will do... so in essence.. it could actually take rotating the engine like 3 or 4 times to find tdc????

74 260z distributor on wrong ??
OHhhhhhh right ... i can only see the cam lobes with valve cover off... so i take out #1 pug and will i be able to see in there when its at top?? i tried putting a screw driver it to feel top of piston but i wasnt sure - it felt like same spot after one rotation...

Ya. But can’t see piston up. I’m just gonna take cover off. I need to get to the bottom of this.

74 260z distributor on wrong ??
That I don’t know. I need to do it with valve cover off. Abs I look for piston up and cam lobes pointing up. ?? That’s all I need to see for tdc? Or do I also need to look at valves. ??

Ohhhh shoot. That I did not know. I just assumed there were two strokes. Up and down. So I tried once. Then did one revolution and tried again. I need to do this with valve cover off. That helped me out a bunch. Thanks for being patient.

Yes zed. I know. So when I rotate engine one revolution the smaller half is on other side. But still at 1:35 position.

I still don’t get one thing. As seen in photo attached crankshaft pully clearly seen at 0 and spindle is 1:35. I did one full rotation and marked at 0 abs pully at 0. So one of those was compression stroke right? And on both of those the spindle showed 1;35. Why is it doing that and not 11:25?? What could be going on?
-
74 260z distributor on wrong ??
Ok patcon. So the only reason I am taking valve cover off is to make sure first piston is up and 2 lobes pointing up?
-
74 260z distributor on wrong ??
Ok zed. I will also get photos of dizzy. Maybe it was replaced with wrong mounting bracket or mounting bracket put on upside down or backwards. That’s possible as well.

Have you seen a photo of the two marks that should line up at cam chain?

74 260z distributor on wrong ??
Thanks racer. About the distributor drive spindle being “ in the proper position” why did someone say there really is no proper position as all it will do is change where the #1 spark plug goes. ? If by some chance someone put the spindle in wrong or off a few teeth it should still work? I don’t want to mess with oil pump. So most say it should be at 11:25 position. Is it ever anything else? By aligning my crank shaft pulley at 0 the spindle was at like 1:35. Then I rotated crank shaft pulley one revolution and marked at 0 again. Abs looked at spindle again and it was at 1:35 again. Can the pully timing mark be different then if I take valve cover off abs try to find tdc using the timing chain mark ?? does that make sense??

When you say camshaft spindle you mean the shaft up from the oil pump? Inside the distributor hole?
-
74 260z distributor on wrong ??
Thanks guys. I will take valve cover off and try my best to get tdc. When the cover is off is there also a mark near the cam chain or timing chain? If abs when those line up will the marks on the pulley wheel also line up where they are supposed to? and once all lined up should I put the dizzy back on and see where the rotor points to?? And that will be #1 spot??

ok I got ya all ... when i said if the mounting plate was flipped around and the "wires" would not reach. i meant the green power wires to he dizzy, not the spark plug cables. If any of you have seen a dizzy with the square rubber plug that the wires slide through on the dizzy, located towards the drivers side fender, show me,. of the few i have seen the rubber slot is near the radiator, i will look for some photos to see what i can see...also, trust me i know the dizzy cap only goes on one way, i am crystal clear on that.. but i am also used to a marking for #1.. this cap has no such marking what so ever, no line, no #1, no star no nothing... I will take valve cover off tomrrow and find tdc.. when piston is up, are valves up or down for tdc??? thanks again guys and i hope to solve this soon.. but even if i get dizzy on right i may still not have spark due to pick up ot electronic unit.... grrrrr also something i missed, is there another mounting plate on the bottom of the distributor?? also the plate mounted to the engine???? oh man - i had no clue about that - i thought you meant the plate mounted to engine was on wrong... geeesh i will take a photo of bottom of dizzy.... 🙂

its a great thought that it was in 180deg off.. but if i flipped the plate around all the original wires would never reach... its so weird.. here are more photo of it... and honestly.. i swear up and down - there is no mark for #1 on that cap. i have gone over it for marks , lines, numbers etcc

yes - there was a screw holding the dizzy down.. i took it off - dizzzy was in good shape - all wires ok... not sure if oil pump was ever even taken off - but when i got this beast it had spark plug wires on it that did not even reach #6 - all the wires to the coil were wrong ( not done as shown in fsm ) . so this car has been rigged up backwards... does it look like i need to drop oil pump or not - i hope not..
