Cost of rechroming 240 bumpers
Michael, I painted the bumpers, and they have been in storage while I finish the car-in a protected environment the Glisten has held up just like the day I painted it. I fully expect it to perform just as well when the bumpers are on the car, and they are exposed to the weather. Using everything was easy-just like painting any other part of the car-except I used a brush! You do lose a little of the "Blue" of the chrome, but it is only noticeable(to me anyway) when there is a direct side by side check-at one foot, it is not noticeable. Will

Was this a z??
I think I would arrange to have it stolen, burned, and collect the insurance. Will-not the one who paid for that!
-
What do you think of this Z?
Because of who sold it to this guy and his track record of a lack of understanding of vocabulary, I would want to thoroughly check the car out(or have it checked out by someone who knows what "original" and "restoration" mean) before I bought it as an original car-you might get an original car that was restored with later model parts-meaning it has been put in serviceable and cosmetic shape with parts that fit but did not come on a 240Z. Blast Cabinet Question
Here are the pictures! One of the cabinet sitting on top of a tool box. You can clearly see the rectangles of cardboard and the difference they make in clarity of the shield through use. You can also see the air nipple I installed, it has a female on the other end, and a whip hose between the gun and the fitting-its picture was too dark. Yes, I did tape up the glove mounting rings-they leaked dust before the shopvac... One of the lens and covering with the light on, clearly showing the low/no visability of the used half of the plastic shield, and the clarity of a recently uncovered/low use section of the shield. There are alos two pictures of the shopvac filter, the one with the uniform color is the dirty one-almost no air flows through it. I disturbed some of the dust to show the filter underneath in the next picture. Finally there is a picture of the light in the bag-all taped up and dusty from use! The magnet holds the light to the underside of the top of the cabinet. TexasZ, If I didn't take the pictures you wanted, let me know, and I will take more. Will

240z shell
I just bought a shell on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4555368387&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT While there was only a brief mention of rust, and a mention of a cracked fraimrail, there was a lot more damage than was listed the core support was damaged from above(probably when the drive train came out), and below(probably forced into the engine crane when the drivetrain fell). The pas. side TC rod mount was pulled loose-rust inside the rail made it weak. I expected there would be many undiscovered problems, and realy bought the car for what was described rather than avioding it for what was not. Getting the car on the trailer was not terribly difficult-not that it was easy. We used a HF winch I had set up for use with the trailer, a pair of ramps, and some sweat! Next time I will slide it up the ramps on a sheet of plywood to keep the frame rails straight-the edge of the trailer likes to crease them. If you are going to buy one, ask very specific questions, and require specific pictures for verification. It is too easy for a general picture to miss an important problem. Will

trivia
In the Shanghi Days/Nights movies, Jackie Chans character was Chong Wang-which in "Chinenglish" is what John Wayne sounds like... Sorry for the confusion-I am just a big Jackie Chan fan. Right Rocky-wrong movie and car-don't forget the Shaolin priest who was Frankenstein first!! If you see three movie titles-pick the one in the middle! Another hint:the Priest has also recently been a snake charmer! Yet another hint:one of the top three actors in the movie was born here-Savannah, Ga. Will

trivia
Ok, Vicky, it wasn't Chong Wang, but it was Jackie Chan. Will I should have known-any family with a Showcar, a "Factory" restoration, and a Scarab would not find a challenge in a movie about cars. ...Unless it is this one. What car did a guy who played a Shaolin Monk and was also known as Frankenstein drive in what movie with Rocky? Will

Vicky, I am still stumped! Who drove the Mitsubishis in the first two Canon Ball Run movies? Hint: It wasn't John Wayne... Will

Is there such thing as a "smoke bomb"?
There are several varieties-from the 25 cent variety at the South Carolina fireworks stores across the bridge, to The military cannister type issued to the Rangers stationed at Hunter Army Airfield. If you guys don't have fireworks shops, use a water pistol to shoot oil based wheel bearing grease in the hot exhaust-instant faux blown engine-andit will burn out leaving the bike unharmed. Maybe a little atf in the gas... Sound like a sheep film to me-has Carl asked for a video recreation of his picture? (couldn't find the thing) Will

Blast Cabinet Question
Rob, Both, the paper filter will tear if it gets too clogged, the foam filter can actually melt when it gets clogged-the moving air cools the motor, a clogged filter stops or limits the movemnet of the air meaning the heat will build up. Air will take the path of least resistance, meaning less filtering-meaning more dust dumped into the air you are breathing-unless you vent the shopvac to the outside! I'll get some pictures of the clogged paper filter to post tomorrow-it is what I have been using, and it is time to clean it! Will

Blast Cabinet Question
Texas, I left the camera at the other house-I'll pick it up tomorrow and post the pictures of the whole thing-I use the same situation Michael suggests. Rob, if you clean the shopvac before you start using it with the blast cabinet, then you can just dump it back in. If you have appropriate baffles set up, the shopvac will usually take only the airborn dust out of the cabinet-depending on what direction you are blasting. One very serious warning!!! The dust WILL clog up the filter media used in the shopvac. If you do not clean the filters early and often, you will burnup the motor, and worse yet, rupture the media causing all of the collected dust to come right back into the air you breathe-sillicosis is no joke, and it is easy to ignore dusty air when you are caught up in discovering the beauty under the flaking paint and rust-my long illness toward the later part of last year and extending through the early part of this year was lengthened by this very situation. Now I wear a dust mask even when using the cabinet. Take no chances when it comes to your health and safety. Will

Advice
You didn't waste your typing, you tried to help someone with a desire to install a bad implementation of a good idea! Saving maintenance is a good idea, doing it by replacing SUs with a 4 barrel is most definitely a bad implementation. In 1976, an ASC certified Master Mechanaic and Nissan trained 240Z specialist told me: "Most of the time, aftermarket products are far better for lightening a wallet than speeding up a car. Usually a tuneup gives more results than the sayso of an ad." This was his comment when I asked him about this very conversion-I bought it anyway-I have never doubted his direction since... Will

Advice
Welcome to the club! The best thing I can do to give you a welcome gift is to say-don't do the conversion! "my step dad wants me to do the conversion because they are easier to maintain" That is ONLY because he knows about a 4 barrel, and doesn't know about the SUs. If he sends ZTherapy the $20 for the tape, he will find out his problem with the learning curve is easily overcome, and the SUs will give both of you a car that is a great deal more fun to drive than a car with a four barrel conversion. Compare the manifolds, the SU manifolds have essentially equal length runners, the 4 barrel conversion does not-you are considering trading a superior and well designed induction system for a "roughed in" system. The four barrel conversion will work, but anyone who has ever really dialed in the SUs, and then tried the four barrel setup has gone back to the SUs in short order-when they are properly tuned, they will easily out perform the best tuned conversion. I won't tell you how I know this, but I sold the manifold, and a 4 barrel three weeks after I installed it-spent nearly $600 to find out what I had was clearly superior to what I bought-I even took the car in and had it tuned by a four barrel GOD. The SUs ran better, the car was faster, and the slight extra maintenance was worth the benefit to the right foot, seat for the pants, and the stopwatch. That lesson cost me $322(the loss I took on selling the manifold&carb, plus the cost of having a professional carbureator tuner dial in the four barrel). The SUs are also paid for-spring for the tape, the time to watch, the parts to rebuild as necessary, and enjoy knowing what you did was better for the car, and the smiles per inch of foot travel! If you are deadset on converting to a four barrel-don't race anyone who has properly tuned SUs, you will see that spending the money and the time has also cost you performance. I am sure someone who has done the conversion would love to buy your SUs... It is your car, your money, and your perogative to pay to learn this lesson yourself! Will

Blast Cabinet Question
The plastic bag keeps the sand out of the housing-the sand gets behind it, and actually fills the lens up with sand. The sand also ends up destroying the switch in short order-even if you just leave it on and use the plug, it will quit working in a couple of days use. A large freezer bag keeps this from happening-just use a tie wrap around the chord...I burnt up four lights in short order before I tried this seven months ago-still on the same light... The Store here does not stock the shields, and at almost $10(for a piece of clear plastic film) each after shipping(the ones I need are $20 for three plus $8 handling), $10 a day is too much for the volume I do when I do it. You only look through a small section of the lens at a time, the carboard keeps the rest of it clear untill you are ready to use it. I use cardboard rectangles approx 1.5"x4", the sheild will last for over a months use. Will I'll post some pictures tomorrow. Will

Blast Cabinet Question
I have been using the red HF counter-top cabnet for over a year. I have an original shopvac(the one made from a 5gallon bucket) on it, and I found that placing one of the magnetic flourescent lights, http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46114 , in a clear plastic bag inside the unit works very well to illuminate the cabnet. The magnet holds the light to the top,and the long power cord is easy to snake through the air intake. I also drilled a hole, installed an air connection into the cabinet, and ran the gun and hose that came with it in the inside. I have found it difficult to find the suprisingly expensive replacement plastic film that keeps the glass from being abraided, so I tape cardboard rectangles inside the shields, and expose the next section when the one I am using becomes too cloudy to use.
