Yeah, I probably qualify as "heavy people" and I probably haven't helped it the past couple of weeks. Will report back once we try reinforcing things. Looking forward to driving it with proper back support.

I don’t know. The left front mounting area is also cracked. Not as bad as the rear but still… Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile
  3. Took our ‘72 240Z down to Cars and Coffee in San Clemente, CA. We didn’t park in the exhibitor area, but based on what I saw there, we probably should have. There was one really beautiful right side drive, orange 240Z there. It could’ve used some company :-) Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile
  4. Yesterday while driving down the freeway at a constant speed, I noticed my fuel gauge going down rapidly. Then it came back up and proceeded to go up and down at about the speed of second hand on a clock. Does anybody know what is likely to be going on? I've never seen anything like it. I'd hate not to be able to trust the fuel gauge.

I took the seat out and found a couple of things. The seat frame is cracked on the right side of the seat bottom. Also, the mounting area on the car for the left rear mounting bolt is broken through, allowing the left rear of the seat to sag back. There maybe other issues I’ll find once I remove the upholstery completely. My mechanic is going to weld the seat frame and add some 1/8” plates on all four mounting brackets on the frame to make sure it’s all solid. Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile

That could be the case. Hope it's not. It doesn't seem to twist one way or the other when it bends back. But now I'll have that option in mind when I look into it more, and it might help me find the problem/solution faster. I guess I'll have to figure out how to take the seat out and remove the cover/foam enough to see what's going on. Thanks!

One problem I'm about to attack on our new '72 240Z is that the driver's seatback is "loose". When you sit in the seat, the seatback will flex back another 10-15 degrees when you lean on it. The result is that the seating position is too far reclined, even in the most upright position. The seat adjuster lever and "ratchet" mechanism seem to work fine. The flex is coming from the structure of the seat somehow. the seat is somehow pivoting in the hinge area and the I'll have to pull the seat out and maybe remove the seat cover to see what's going on. We are brand new to the Z. Is this a common issue and does anybody have advice as to what to look for first? Thanks!
  8. The lever on the column of my '72 240Z does not activate the high/low beams. I am stuck in high beam mode. The turn signals work, but the lever flops loosely from front to back. I haven't had the thing apart to look at it yet, but this will likely be my first fix on the car once I bring it home (it's hidden at a friend's until I give it to my son for Christmas). I'm sure I can find a video to show how to remove the steering wheel and expose the internals on the mechanism, but I am concerned that I might not be able to find the parts I need. The guys at MSA told me that they don't think the thing I need is being made by anyone, and they certainly don't have it. Is it possible that all I need is to replace a spring of some sort? Any advanced advice welcome, but I'll take it apart ASAP and look into it myself.
  9. Such great advice - thanks so much! Soaking it all in. I have started a wish list. The relay kits are on it, along with the DeoxIT, and I already know I need to buy a choke knob (broken on ours). Funny - Motorsport Auto has every year EXCEPT '72. I'll find it, and my mechanic says any of them will fit. Might choose the one that says "Choke" on it, since he's never used one and might forget where it is Bought the car up in Paso Robles and had to drive it down that night(4.5 hours). Long story short - electric problems caused me to have to turn off the lights. Had to drive from Bakersfield over the Grapevine, etc. and down to Orange County late at night with no lights at all. Very sketchy drive. Turned out to simply be that the belt was old and not working. Working fine now, but I realize that upgrading the wires and adding those relays is a good idea. My mechanic (up in Rancho Cucamonga) already mentioned that he wired his up that way. Right now the car is parked at a buddy's house a few blocks away. I'll post some more photos after the big reveal on Christmas morning. Seats are in pretty good shape, but the seating surfaces are original dealer-installed velour/vinyl version. Slightly tacky, but not too bad. This car is white w/ red interior. Thanks again for all the great feedback. Please don't hold back - I'm taking note of all of it. This looks like a fantastic forum!
  10. I bought a '72 240 for my son for Christmas. Going to give it to him on Christmas morning.....It's going to be awesome! I want to give him some small things as gifts that he can use to restore/maintain the car. The basics: -- The care is in pretty good shape. Solid daily driver w/ no rust. Mostly original interior and engine. Picking it up from the mechanic tomorrow (went through brakes, carbs, a few hoses, etc to make it ready for daily use). -- Examples of the kinds of things I'm looking to buy: penetrating spray for siezed fasteners, cleaning liquid for interior, fender cover (to drape over fender while working on engine, etc. -- Anything else we might need as brand new owners just getting started with our Z. I have most of the basic hand tools we'll need, but anything that is particularly useful on a Z would be great to know. Thanks, everybody. Looking forward to participating in this forum and getting to know people. Once my son has his car, I'll let him into this login so we can both post.
