Maybe this will help someone in the future. I took the boot and was able to stretch it over the round handle of a chisel. Then i used a heat gun to loosen it up. It took about 4 attempts like this but I was eventually able to get the boot on. Its the easy things that that are the hardest...

Making progress on the rack. Finished painting it and put the new dust covers on. Of course after I finished painting I scratched it in the middle. Quick fix though.

Has anyone used the tie rod boots from zcar depot? I bought a pair but I can not get them on. The inner ring is just a little too small to get on the tie rod. I did everything and couldn't get them on. I think my rack is original but I cant be certain. Has anyone had luck with rubber boots from somewhere else?

Hey, was wondering if anyone had a tip for me. I removed the drivers side outer tie rod but the passenger one is seized. Its lefty loosy on the passenger side right? The drivers side is the one that is the opposite way? I have used heat and PB blaster. Wont budge.

I agree zed. The price is best offer. I put it in wrong. It’s an excellent opportunity for someone to get a great car with a little work.

Cars for Sale: Sadly must sell - 1978 - 280z
View Advert Sadly must sell - 1978 - 280z It’s with great sadness that I am selling my 1978 280z. My wife and I are moving and there is no room for it at the new house. About a year and a half ago I was simply going to change the front bushings and at that time I found major rust on the driver’s side frame rail and floor pan. Apparently a previous owner filled it with fiberglass which is why it was unknown to me. My only option was to pull the engine to get at the rust. The frame rail, drivers floor pan and radiator support have all been professionally repaired. All that is left is to put the engine back in and restore the front suspension parts. With a 2 year old daughter and my work schedule I have not been able to do this. The body is in very good condition with some minor defects. It is racing green (not original) with a brown interior. I replaced the windshield, added 240 chrome wipers, a 240z wood steering wheel and had the non-working original radio retro fitted by Joes Classic Car radio. The car ran great and the compression test I did before removal was even across all cylinders. The 5 speed transmission shifts smoothly with no issues. I stock piled some parts that I didn’t have a chance to use yet. These will have to go to. Parts List Full front rubber bushings Alternator Adjusting bar Decal anti freeze Decal Nihon Radiator Decal, Vehicle Emissions Door Seals Egr valve and gasket Electrical Schematics Fuel Injector Hose Clamps Fuel Line Heat Connector Inspection bumpers Left Door Seal Outlet Heater Hose Thermostat Valve Cover Bolts Water Pump Also bought a new transmission kit from z car source. If you have any interest please let me know. In addition I will throw in the engine stand and engine crane which I will no longer need. Please see my thread Rust Advice 280z on these forums. You will see pictures and the work done. Advertiser gotham22 Date 01/26/2020 Price Category Cars for Sale Year 1978 Model 280z Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

This may be a dumb question but I will ask anyway. Always been told there are no dumb questions, just dumb people. Ha! I am looking to remove the surface rust from the engine bay. There are parts where it will be difficult to get a wire brush into ( I.e. battery tray area). Has anyone tried to use a pressure washer to get the rust off? Would that even work? Or am I going to cause too much damage to the metal.

Making some progress...cleaning up various parts. July 8th I am bringing the car into a shop to take care of the rust and replace the frame rail, floor panel and floor support. Will update the thread once the work is completed

thanks for the info. Should I use a primer or something like that now when I am removing the rust since I wont be painting it soon?

I haven't been posting much but I have been working. Transmission is completely cleaned now and so is half the engine. You can even see the original blue paint now! We'll sort of, but I have two cans of the color to repaint with. Couple of questions: Is there a good paint or clear that people have used for the transmission. I got it cleaned but its spotty and doesn't look great. I started tackling the surface rust in the engine compartment. Once I am down to bear metal how can I protect it as I am not ready to paint yet. Does anyone know if someone sells Datsun color 240 in a rattle can? attached is a pick of the battery tray where I was able to get to good metal. Also, a pick of some of the rust I need to treat on the firewall

Guys, I am working on the refresh of the transmission and have been knee deep in wire brushes and gook! Ha! Has anyone used this kit from zcarsource. Wondering if it is worth buying as a kit instead of sourcing the individual parts https://zcarsource.com/transmission-service-kit-240z-260z-280z-72-78-new

Apparently the previous owner only found salt on the drivers side since the passenger side is fine. Either that or they just aimed a sprinkler on that side! I took a closer look at it tonight and the rusted part is a thin piece of metal. Behind it looks to be structural part of the support which seems to be solid.

Hello all, I hibernated for the winter! Now that it is warm I am ready to work on the car again. The goal is to get it back on the road this year. I changed course a bit and found someone who can weld the frame rail for me. I feel like it is a bit too much for me to take on. Before I send this to the shop I need to get your opinion regarding the radiator support. Does anyone know where I can find one? I feel like mine is too far gone.

Hey Guys, haven't posted in awhile...not much to tell. Mostly I have been practicing welding. My sheet metal is very thin - 16-18 gauge. I ordered 20 gauge but they gave me this crap. Definitely not 20. I will make sure I get the correct one when I do the actual work. I am feeling better about my spot welds! As you can see I have been experimenting. First day there were a lot of burn-through. Rookie! Mostly I have been playing around to get the feel of the welder and see how the metal reacts. Looking to weld my first patch next week.
