  1. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/IMG_3778.webp Three Z Cars Three Ways by Larry Chen We are excited to be part of a new episode of Jay Leno’s Garage featuring Larry’s own beloved SR20DET-powered 1970 Datsun 240Z, legendary John Morton’s personal Datsun 240Z and our KN20-powered Datsun 240Z. See Larry Chen’s message below and a few photos from the video shoot: “Filmed with legends yesterday Somehow I convinced John Morton, Rob Fuller and Jay Leno’s Garage Car Care to come together to do an all 240z show. Three different Datsuns modified three different ways. Can you believe that John got his first ever 240z at 82 years old? He waited that long to join the club. Keep an eye out for this episode on the Jay Leno’s Garage Car Care YouTube channel. Thanks to Z Car Garage for bringing the twin cam Honda K- Series Datsun Works car down. The last slide is of Jay ripping on the 350hp twin cam car.” http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/IMG_3771.webphttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/IMG_3781.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/IMG_3783.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/IMG_3785.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/IMG_3777.jpg More photos in the gallery! It has a competitive race engine, Penske shocks which are the current suspension for SCCA Spec-Miatas. Just to pay tribute to how wonderful Mrs. Butters Z (our Series 1 shop 240z) is, we painted it Safari Gold. It’s nickname is Little Butters, Josh likes to call it “I can’t believe it’s not Butters” and then we picked the number 23 because we are Nissan dorks. 3. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1887.jpeg On Saturday, August 29 we attended the Tokyo Calling 6 event hosted by Breakfast Club Rally. Z Car Garage participated with a group of client cars and enjoyed a wonderful day of driving through the foothills of Northern California. The event featured 250+ Japanese classics and 90’s-era wonders to appreciate during the morning social gathering and rest stops. Enjoy our report with photo gallery and video! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1797-e1790301876849.jpeg Breakfast Club Rally http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/IMG_7693-1024x768.jpeg The Breakfast Club Rally (BCR) started 6 years ago as a small group enjoying weekend drives. It blossomed into monthly events with one hour of hanging out followed by several hours of driving. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy the beautiful Northern California roads and scenery. You can see our previous BCR reports HERE! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1727-e1790296510269.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/742362659_1549165183280621_1174176092703658654_n-scaled.png The initial BCR Tokyo Calling event, Tokyo Calling 2, Tokyo Calling 3, Tokyo Calling 4, and Tokyo Calling 5 were all a blast. We did not want to miss their sixth all-Japanese, mostly-vintage rally so I assembled a group of Z Car Garage clients and friends to participate in TC6. We left the shop at 6:15am heading to Sonoma, here is a preview of our cars: Jim’s 1971 Datsun 240Z http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/IMG_3873-e1641173598875-1024x674.jpeg Jim’s 1971 Datsun 240z is now sporting a Rebello 3.2L with Jenvey ITB EFI, A/C, Recaro Specialist seats, CD009a 6-speed transmission, our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes and Z Car Garage CV Axles! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/IMG_3798-1024x768.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1925.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1717.jpeg Frank’s 1978 Datsun 280Z http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6836.jpg Frank’s 1978 Datsun 280Z features our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes, full suspension refresh, 240Z bumper conversion and Panasport wheels. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1719.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_8416.jpg Mrs. Butters http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screen-Shot-2025-09-07-at-8.52.38-AM.png I drove Mrs. Butters, our Series 1 shop 240z. This is the special,”Proto Spec” edition limited to just 240 units. We love her “1OF240Z” tribute license plate. BCR hosted a “social hour” from 7:30-9am so we could take in all the glorious cars. The vibe was tremendous, and as usual it went by too quickly. Let’s go through some of the highlights, with more photos in the gallery below! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1868.jpeg Over 25 S30 Z cars were present! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1816.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1787.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1778.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1881.jpeg I am always on the lookout for Nissans and Datsuns, and roadsters get my attention. There were at least 14 in attendance including a few genuine 1967 2000s. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1769.jpeg One of the most sought after Datsuns, these “half-year” models were introduced mid-1967 offering a 5-speed transmission and 150hp twin-Mikuni carb’d 2L engine…hot stuff for the era. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1872-e1790227511512.jpeg Ian’s SRL is #601 (out of ~1000 cars) and it was fully restored years ago by Les Cannaday in San Diego. Ian is meticulous about maintaining this car, but it is no garage queen, attending monthly rally events. The (655) Off-white paint with red interior is one of my favorites. Yes, it even sports a factory Nissan hardtop with all the stainless trim! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/IMG_8903-e1648257348668-1024x768.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1752.jpeg Another ’67 2000, this one is #048! I really enjoyed hustling Mrs. Butters through the backroads. I encourage you to visit each of these FOUR photographer’s photo albums to see shots of your rides: Kevin Lee, Alex Nibyt, Hubbe Emma Lai and Chris Friske. We took a midpoint break in the small town of Occidental. Lots of cars to see and great chatting with fellow enthusiasts. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1924.jpeg The rally concluded back in Sonoma airport, where BCR arranged for lunch from Kinoko Japanese Home Cooking. Nissan was well-represented with IMSA prototypes and the BRE Datsuns: The Nissan Prototypes http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0054.jpeg These were factory-backed prototype race cars that Nissan used to conquer the IMSA GT Championship during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This iconic race car was driven by Geoff Brabham and John Morton, known for de-throning the Porsche 962 in IMSA racing with 8 straight wins. We thank Dean Case and Greg Nelson of Nissan Motorsports for the opportunity to have this legend here at Z Car Garage since 2024. Our client and friend Randy Jaffe and Mark Lambert transported the 1971 BRE Datsun 510 and 1970 BRE Datsun 240Z from Atlanta on behalf of Nissan. Both cars were part of the central showcase: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0098.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_9490.jpeg BRE Championship driver John Morton gave hot lap rides in the BRE Datsun 510. Legendary automotive designer, racer, and motorsports visionary Peter Brock served as Grand Marshal for the event, a fitting choice given Brock’s influence on Japanese motorsports. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/786927750_1680004577026438_607528507395549748_n-scaled.jpgPete Brock and John Morton with the BRE Datsun 240Z Nearby was the original BRE Datsun 2000 roadster driven by Frank Monise who won the Pacific Coast Championship in 1969: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0091.jpeg Complementing the three BRE Championship cars above were the BRE Hino transporter and Jamaica 510, the 1973 BRE Baja 240Z, the 1969 BRE Baja 510 and Pete Brock’s personal 1972 Datsun 510 aka “screaming yellow zonker”: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0741.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/786093704_1680004843693078_2274935860407519752_n.jpg Now, let’s get to the racing! Z Car Garage Trackside Support for Seven Race Cars http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0809.jpeg With 60+ Nissan/Datsuns racing this year the starting grid for Group 2 (Small-bore/roadsters), Group 8 (B-sedan/510s) and Group 9 (IMSA GTU/Z cars) was a fan’s dream come true. Z Car Garage supported seven race cars, see them all on the dyno in preparation for the Rolex…volume up and enjoy that L-Series music! Peter Gregg Trophy (1973–1981 IMSA GT, GTX, AAGT, GTU and FIA) Rob Fuller piloted the the #49 Joel Anderson IMSA GTU Datsun 240Z in the IMSA group. You might recall the story behind this special, 1972 IMSA GTU 240z as it was owned, built and raced in the 70’s by none other than Joel Anderson. ZCG restored #49 back to its former glory and it debuted at RMMR 2014. John Morton would drive #49 at RMMR 2015, and Rob Fuller finally drove it at the 2018 RMMR. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Zs-into-Turn-6-@weathertechraceway-Rolex-Motorsports-Reunion.-@rawbfuller-@zcargarage.jpgRob Fuller in the Joel Anderson IMSA GTU Datsun 240Z, photo by Travis Bath 2026 ROB: Since the IMSA car has been back together, unfortunately we’ve been having a couple of teething issues with it. It was ok in the first practice of Rolex Reunion, but it just didn’t feel like it was gonna work well. We made the call to to leave it on display in our paddock. Rob was heartbroken, but that is racing. The #49 car will be back, for now enjoy this extended video with in-car footage of Rob dicing it up with big power Porsche RSRs at the 2024 RMMR… Volume UP and Long Live The Z! Bob Sharp Cup (1966–1979 Historic SCCA B & C Sedans) http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Z91_1703.jpgPhoto by Nicholas Caraballo Historic B&C Sedan proudly organized a field of 48 historic sedans set to be exhibited and raced in the Bob Sharp Cup. Datsun 510s dominated the field with notables including the Corky Bell U2.5L Trans Am 510, Paul Newman’s 510 and several Bob Sharp Racing cars including the #38 Ex-Jim Fitzgerald 510, 610 (driven by Adam Carolla) and 200sx. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0228-2.jpeg Z Car Garage helped arrange the field for a photoshoot on the front straight and it was epic. Each car with historical provenance, ready to be driven hard. Kudos to Glenn Chiou and Dave Stone for making this race group a reality. You can grab a high-res image of the group photo directly from the photographer Rami Garcia. VIDEO: See the B-Sedan group in action! Z Car Garage Racers in B-Sedan Group http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0212.jpeg ROB: Z Car Garage raced and supported four Datsun 510s running in the Bob Sharp Cup. Myself in the Corky Bell car, Tom Dockery in the Ex-Balzer car, Kenny in the Ex-Ted Gruner car and new client, Patrick Byrne in the Ex- Greg Schmidt 510. Everyone had a good time. #72 Tom Dockery http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0185.jpeg We have helped Tom build and prepare his Ex-Norm Balzer/Koobation 510 for several years. He is a Datsun enthusiast, friend and we love seeing him improve his craft. Here is Tom’s race report from the Rolex… TOM: The full impact of running the Pre-Reunion and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is still sinking in. Racing at the Rolex was only a dream 20 years ago, but it became my primary goal after acquiring the Norm Balzer car in 2016. A very special thanks to Dave Stone for finding the car and facilitating the sale, and to Steve Link for selling it to me. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Z91_1826.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Z91_8365-1.jpg The week had another special element: my sons, Matt and Nick, and my daughter-in-law, Sarah, drove their historic Datsuns and Alfa down from Portland. We spent the entire week together, caravanning to Monterey and enjoying the automotive scene. It was great fun. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0539.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0668.jpeg Both racing events were fantastic. As always, the car was flawless, and the ZCG Team made the experience seamless and carefree. They allowed me to be fully present with my family and friends throughout the event. Thanks to Rob’s coaching and positioning at the front of the practice and qualifying grid, I was able to set a personal record in the very first session. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Z91_2569.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0811-e1789329332238.jpeg The races at both events went well, and I stayed in the top 15 in all four races. I was especially pleased to remain within sight of Jenson Button and ahead of Jimmie Johnson in both races. To be fair, both had a 500cc handicap, and Jimmie was racing a right-hand-drive car for the first time. One thing I will never forget is the energy of sitting on the grid and feeling the excitement of the people surrounding the area. It was a magical moment for me. A big thank you to everyone who helped me get there. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0878.jpeg VIDEO: In-car action with Tom’s 510 Take a few laps with Tom Dockery in the Ex-Balzer/Koobation B-Sedan Datsun 510 #39 Patrick Byrne http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0835.jpeg ROB: Patrick and Bill Byrne are a father and son team that have lots of cool vintage cars. Patrick runs in the IMSA group with my Z and he is a brilliant driver. Super excited to see the Schmidt car previously owned by Bill Ockerlund, now in the ZCG’s hands. We took this car to a test day before the Rolex, found a few shortcomings and sorted it out. Really cool car, beautiful and very competitive with Patrick behind the wheel. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_9354.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_9576.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Z91_1764.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0819.jpeg #64 Kenny Tse http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0213.jpeg Kenny has been with us for many years enjoying our Z Car Garage Trackside Services for his Ex-Ted Gruner B-Sedan Datsun 510. Famed engineer and race car driver Corky Bell ran this Datsun 510 in the early 70’s Trans Am series. Z Car Garage restored it back to its former glory with Trans Am livery and Corky drove it for the first time in 53 years at the 2024 Velocity event. We will dedicate a separate blog post to the restoration and Corky’s story. Here are a few photos of the car during the revival: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/IMG_5170-1024x768.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/349016120_644584760818454_3091467674584677943_n.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0716.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0719.jpeg Rob had a blast driving the Bell car with fellow B-Sedan racers in the Bob Sharp Cup. Datsun Roadsters at the RMMR http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0095.jpeg The 2026 Rolex Reunion featured no less than 12 Datsun Roadsters, roughly 9 of them racing in the John Morton Trophy (1950s–1960s SCCA Small Displacement Production Cars). Z Car Garage provided race preparation and trackside support services for our two new clients: Bruce White out of Colorado and Greg Walsh from Monterey. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0631.jpeg ROB: Bruce White purchased the #33 1967 Datsun 2000 from our friend Ron Carter, so we’ve known about this car for many years and super excited to be a part of its next chapter. The car needed some sorting prior to the Rolex reunion so we did a test day and identified some shortcomings. Jim Tyler from Datsun Restoration Products was a wonderful resource to help us get this thing going. Bruce had never driven the roadster and by the end of the Pre-Reunion he was really competitive, putting down solid 1:54s and third overall among the Datsuns. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0450.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_9374-1.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Z91_6603-1.jpg Craig Walsh had a similar experience in his Dan Parkinson Roadster: he struggled in the past with his Dan Parkinson roadster and we were able to have both of these cars run flawlessly. Both clients had a great time and that was really cool running at the Pre-Reunion and Rolex. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0478.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/IMG_2983.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0441.jpeg Such a great sight seeing all these Datsun Roadsters in the paddock. And then the guys, Josh and Cooper and Megan and Alvin…the vibe in the Z Car Garage paddock was incredible and the amount of cool cars that were there was unbelievable. You know I’ve been going to the Rolex reunion since the 90s and it was just awesome for me to see the paddock filled with so much deliciousness from overseas in Japan. Nissan: Thank you so much for letting us be a part of the GTP history we got that car rolling, on display and then to Pebble Beach. A great job to everybody that’s involved to make those weekends work, really appreciate it. Thanks to Nicholas Caraballo and Travis Bath for the on-track photos. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_1523.jpg We hope you have enjoyed our recap of the 2026 Rolex Monterey Motorpsorts Reunion! 5. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1188-e1782455280257.jpg This is Sean’s 1970 Datsun 240Z featuring our Z Car Garage CV Axles and Z Car Garage Big-Brakes that he had installed in SoCal. Highlights include a Rebello 3.0L, triple-Mikuni induction, Nismo 6-speed transmission and Watanabe wheels. Let’s take a look at how Sean got into Z cars… http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/933-e1782455563241.jpg Sean: This early-production 1970 Datsun 240Z Series 1 was purchased in 2019 from the original owner’s family. The original owner, in the army and stationed in Okinawa at the time, bought the car there brand new in mid-1970. It’s an early-production car with a 4/70 build date, chassis number HLS30-2811, and is one of the early non-EVAP examples. After completing his time overseas, he had the car shipped back to the United States in 1972, where it spent its entire life in Long Beach and has remained in California ever since. The family also included the original 1972 California pink slip with the car, which I thought was incredibly cool. Because of its lifelong California history, while the car does have some minor rust in common areas, it remains a very solid and honest example with excellent bones. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1657-e1787096155561.jpg The original owner passed away roughly 25 years ago, after which the car sat dormant and untouched. When I acquired it, although largely original, the interior was in rough shape, the engine barely ran, and the car showed clear signs of long-term neglect. Over the years, it had been repainted twice in its lifetime, but I intentionally chose to leave the exterior exactly as it is. The layers of paint, chips, and exposed remnants of the original finish tell the story of the car’s history, and preserving that character became more important to me than restoring it cosmetically.. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1164-e1782455337223.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1655-e1787096197287.jpg Interior http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/658161765_10241494415237943_7047080356293105138_n.jpg SEAN: While the exterior remains untouched, I painstakingly restored the interior myself back to essentially factory condition, using as many original parts as possible. This build was never intended to be a trailer queen — it was built to be period-correct, with modern underpinnings, driven, and enjoyed. Because of that, a full repaint will probably never happen. I know I’d never be able to keep it perfect, and honestly, I enjoy the car far more this way. I drive it through the canyons nearly every weekend, which is what it was built for... http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1630.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1631.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1627.jpg Drivetrain http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/841.jpg SEAN: Mechanically, the car has been transformed into the driver’s car I always envisioned. It’s powered by a 3.0L Rebello engine, paired with a Nissan S15 Nismo six-speed transmission and a fully rebuilt R200 differential with a Quaife LSD. Supporting modifications include triple Mikuni 44 PHH carbs, Kameari headers, a Fujitsubo Legalis R exhaust system, 123 Ignition, and Koyo radiator: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/rebello-240z-260z-280z-mikuni44phh.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Kameari-header-45mm-primaries.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1549.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1421.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1672.jpg SEAN: The car recently dyno’d at 234 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque to the wheels on a Dynojet, which is more than enough for my needs. At this point, the build is pretty much complete Now it’s simply about enjoying the experience and continuing to drive a car that feels incredibly rewarding every time I get behind the wheel. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/658200386_10241494398437523_6733068479603855295_n.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1121.jpg Enjoy this video of the Z in action including the dyno run, volume up! The Z Car Garage Big-Brake and CV Axle upgrades absolutely transformed the car, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The car has also been professionally corner-balanced and tuned to my liking. As fellow S30 owner/racer Glenn C mentioned in his review, on top of braking performance, pedal feel is extremely important and our Big-Brakes deliver. I bought my first Datsun 240Z in 1988 for 700 bucks before my senior year of high school and went on to own several more throughout the 1990s before selling my last one in 2001 due to having twin boys, as life understandably shifted priorities, but I hoarded and held onto all my parts, knowing that someday I’d own another one once the kids finally flew the coop.. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/931-e1782455592546.jpg Thanks for your support Sean we love that you are Enjoying The Ride and Long Live The Z! 9. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_9032.jpeg One of ZCG’s greatest achievements is the development of our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes in collaboration with StopTech. Many satisfied clients are running these brakes on their S30s. Unfortunately, due to supply issues, we no longer offer that kit. The good news is that we’re excited to introduce our new Big Brake Kit! Version 2 has a slightly larger rotor with 4-piston calipers front and rear. It is in final testing, and will be released soon. Here are a few photos from our test drive last weekend in “Mrs. Butters”, our 1971 Series 1 240z shop demo car fitted with the V.2 Big-Brake Kit: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_9043.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_8963.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_9014.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_8957.jpeg Stay tuned for more photos, details and pricing. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_9045.jpeg View the full article
  10. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1817-e1783019431106.jpg On June 12-14, Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) hosted the Corkscrew Classic vintage race at Laguna Seca. Z Car Garage supported several client’s Datsun 510 race cars running in B-Sedan Group. It was a great weekend filled with competition, camaraderie and plenty of Alfas, BMWs and Datsuns sharing the track. ZCG clients running at the Corkscrew Classic included: #6 Noah’s Bluebird Coupe http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screen-Shot-2026-06-30-at-9.28.54-AM-e1783022270624.pnghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screen-Shot-2026-06-30-at-9.29.31-AM.png http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1770-e1783019266198.jpg #88 Todd R. ROB: The ZCG team for the weekend covering for Joshua Corwin was Rob, Cooper and Meghan. Cooper is an absolute rockstar. We made it to Laguna Seca hassle-free and got the cars tech inspected. We had Todd in his Datsun 510, Kelly and his new 510 (formally the 52 car of Jim Froula) and we had Noah in the Bluebird and everybody had a good time. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1832-e1783019458993.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_7886.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_7921.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screen-Shot-2026-06-30-at-9.29.59-AM.png The cars worked flawlesly until the end of the weekend when Todd’s 510 had a fuel starvation issue from the FuelSafe. Need to refresh, but will handle that before the Charity Challenge. Great job to Troy Ermish and the Hoosier 2.5 Challenge out there and everybody seem to be behaving and going pretty quick. Lots of cool cars in the paddock, lots of cool friends and perfect weather. The peanut butter pretzels were delicious. The red vines were divine and good times racing. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1776-e1783019335898.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1831.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1815.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_7902.jpg Hoosier Tire 2.5 Challenge http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/689109998_1553149083487262_1075405318520841883_n.jpg CSRG featured the Hoosier 2.5 Challenge TA/BS. This is a fun, affordable way to get into vintage racing. ROB: “Little Butters”, our 1991 Vintage Spec Miata that will be available for rental throughout the vintage race season. Contact Rob at ZCG for details. Since this is a new build for I drove it for the weekend to make sure it was sorted and ready to rock for any client that wants to enjoy it. It has a competitive race engine, Penske shocks which are the current suspension for SCCA Spec-Miatas. Just to pay tribute to how wonderful Mrs. Butters Z (our Series 1 shop 240z) is, we painted it Safari Gold. It’s nickname is Little Butters, Josh likes to call it “I can’t believe it’s not Butters” and then we picked the number 23 because we are Nissan dorks. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/IMG_3012.jpg ROB: Newcomer Steve Albert rented Little Butters for the Corkscrew Classic. He had never been in a Miata before and we had a wonderful weekend with him and his wife hanging out getting to know the Z Car Garage crew. Steve did a great job in Little Butters, picking up nine seconds from start of the weekend to the end. He had some epic battles with the Porsche 912 of Mario M and it was Battle of the Butters http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_7927.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screen-Shot-2026-06-30-at-9.31.18-AM.pnghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1838-e1783019508452.jpg Join us for the 2026 Vintage Racing Season! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_5896-1-1024x687.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Screen-Shot-2026-03-25-at-9.15.26-AM.pngZ Car Garage is amped for more racing this year. Several cars among them had real Trans Am Under 2L and Two-Five Challenge history like the Datsun 510s of Corky Bell and Bob Finn. The Corky Bell Trans Am 510 (Group 5) http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/462212972_10230156685959345_6766561555794879215_n-e1730832620850.jpg Famed engineer and race car driver Corky Bell ran this Datsun 510 in the early 70’s Trans Am series. Z Car Garage restored it back to its former glory with Trans Am livery and Corky drove it for the first time in 53 years at the last Velocity. We will dedicate a separate blog post to the restoration and Corky’s story. Here are a few photos of the car during the revival: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/IMG_5170-1024x768.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/349016120_644584760818454_3091467674584677943_n.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_1672.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_1669.jpeg Rob Fuller piloted the Bell Trans Am 510 at the Velocity Invitational. His race report is below: ROB: This year we were going to see the return of the Joel Anderson IMSA 240Z and unfortunately it didn’t work out. Then our Mini Cooper that was supposed to be in the Mini Vs. Muscle race had some engine issues…so let’s talk about the fun stuff… Historic B&C Sedan! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_3369-e1781502168897.jpg After many years of dedication, Dave Stone and Glenn Chiou finally got an entire group of Historic B&C Sedans assembled for a run group at Velocity Invitational. This is really amazing because it has been discussed forever and every one of the cars inside the field has historic pedigree with stories. With about 33 cars total it was fun racing and we had a really good time. 510s were very strong in the field…Noah was there in his 68 car, Kenny in the 64 Ex-Ted Gruner car, Tom Dockery in the 72 Ex-Balzer/Koobation car and Rob Fuller and Corky Bell number 40 Datsun 510. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_3353-e1781502396961.jpg Chet Taylor raced his Alpha GTV which was piloted for almost 50 years by Jon Norman (Bay Area Alpha legend) and he was in the mix. It was just a blast with great racing and got to spend time with fans and tell them about the cars and their stories. That’s one of my favorite parts. Everybody was competitive, there were no car issues. It was an absolute wonderful weekend filled with peanut butter pretzels, snacks, good times and hugs. Also honorable mention to Greg Hoff in Larry Oka’s historic Michael Bell car that ran out of the Pacific Northwest in the late 70s. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/SnapInsta.to_720675297_18097563551164134_8870059270860041665_n.webphttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_3342.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/SnapInsta.to_712743838_18378137428200606_1610111458338379776_n.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A0031-e1781668639141.jpg The Corky Bell car finished 2nd in the Qualifying Race and third in the Feature Race. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1eda4961-ad30-4bbd-b3bb-514cff7401dc.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8cc2f0c5-71ed-4f34-8d8f-0b8a6e918235-e1781820556941.jpg Enjoy this video of Rob Fuller racing in Group 5 at the Velocity Invitational with in-car action: You can also see the full-length, in-car footage on Saturday and Sunday and watch more of Rob’s racing adventures on his YouTube Channel. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A0206.jpg #68 Noah’s Datsun 510 http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/IMG_1245-1024x700.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A0342.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/SnapInsta.to_719874081_18097563599164134_2437792071347835609_n.webp #72 Tom Dockery We have helped Tom build and prepare his Ex-Norm Balzer/Koobation 510 for several years. A large B-Sedan group, 30 plus cars with a broad representation of manufacturers. This was my first event after extensive work on the car performed by the Z Car Garage team. A special thanks to Rob, Josh and Cooper. The car worked well and I was able to stay in the top third of the run group. There is always room for improvement in my driving but I was very happy with my performance and more importantly the performance of the run group. The group put on a good show with racing throughout the field. Looking forward to August and the Rolex. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A9970-e1781634149936.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_1403-e1781631076716.jpeg We have in-car video from Tom Dockery in the Ex-Norm Balzer B-Sedan Datsun 510, volume up and enjoy! #64 Kenny Tse Kenny is a steady ZCG trackside support client, running the Ex-Ted Gruner 510. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/SnapInsta.to_719770768_18097563614164134_6023498373530801297_n.webphttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_3342.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A0168-e1781677644885.jpg #37 Glenn Chiou http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/IMG_1967-1024x576.jpeg The Historic B and C Sedan founder and Datsun Historian Glenn Chiou raced his his Ex-Bob Finn U2.5L Trans-Am Datsun 510 This car features our Z Car Garage CV Axles. Z Car Garage displayed #49 Joel Anderson IMSA GTU Datsun 240Z. Rob recalls the evening: ROB: Friday night…Larry Chen and Sung Kang go to Sonoma Raceway. They had a separate event where they sold tickets to allow fans to bring cars to the meet, see a drift car demo and trailer of the new movie, Drifter. Larry and Sung did a Q&A-style hang with fans and as the sun set Velocity had us bring down the IMSA GTU Datsun 240Z to the hot pit and display it with some really cool curated cars. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A8023.jpg After the Q&A/trailer and everything in turn seven, they would choose which cars that would go down and be in the car show, was really cool. Lots of families and people I’ve never seen before. The IMSA 240Z was staged between some cars from the race like the Celica GTU car and a Mazda 767B. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BV0A7969.jpgPhotos by Elton Hom At the very end of the hot pit was Larry Chen signing books and meeting people. That line didn’t stop until they kicked us out at 9:30 at night. It was absolutely incredible. People were excited and respectful. People talked to me about some of the YouTube channel episodes that I’ve been in with Larry, their own Z car projects and being at the VI for the first time. Just absolutely wonderful. Very very cool to bridge that world to our world and so it was just a mix of young and old and families. Spent time with Johnny Lieberman. The Z was shipped to us from Georgia for finishing his vision of a wild show/go race car. Inspiration for the Tangerine paint color and Jagermeister livery came from Randy’s obsession with Porsche, and the Max Moritz Racing Porsche 934. Providing room for the 275/315-width tires and custom Panasport C8 wheels is an authentic Pandem Rocketbunny aero kit. Randy channeled his passion for racing into this build and the chassis is virtually identical to his #46 BRE Datsun 240z, using zinc-plated DP Racing suspension parts. The engine is a dyno-tuned 3.2L L-series running 13:5:1 compression, triple-Mikuni ph44s, a Fujitsubo header and glorious BRE-style exhaust. Running gear includes a close-ratio 5-speed ZX transmission, R180 OS Giken LSD, our ZCG CV Axles and ZCG Big-Brake Kit (race version). Continuing the race car theme is a stripped, body-color interior with Sparco race seats, steering wheel and custom Alcantara custom dash. BRE/vintage details throughout. Car is is pristine condition with zero chips, scratches or defects. Approx. 400 miles on build. 1st Place Winner Best Datsun 240Z at the Japanese Classic Car Show. Nissan campaigned three of these S30s in the rally, finishing 1, 2 and 7th place while handily beating Porsche’s and other marques along the way. This is an early 4/70 production (VIN 03227) Series 1 car and Randy shipped it from Georgia to our shop to prepare it for the “60 Years in 30 Seconds” commercial as part of “The New Nissan” ad campaign starring actress Brie Larson. The drivetrain includes a new, dyno-tuned 3.0 Rebello street motor using a 10.5:1 head for pump gas, triple-Mikuni ph44 induction (as the original #11 Safari Z ran) complete with Harada intake, velocity stacks, linkages and Z Car Garage Heat Shield covering the Fujitsubo exhaust header. All backed by a new, 1982 280ZX 5 speed transmission and OS Giken 4.11 LSD. The interior features period touches like navigator’s equipment including 70’s route map, microphone headsets, rally timers and reproduction vintage race seats. Small details remain faithful to the original car inculding functional Works-style side jacking points, rear bumper steps and twin-exit exhaust system. Car was featured by Nissan at SEMA and by Larry Chen in his YouTube video series. Full build details with photos, video and more can be found here: 3L-Powered 1970 Datsun 240Z 5-speed Safari Tribute 2.8L-Powered 1970 Datsun 240Z 5-speed Bonneville Salt Flat Race Car http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_1173crope.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/IMG_2335-1024x768.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/IMG_2213-1024x768.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_0969-e1780466795688.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2306.jpeg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/IMG_6862-1024x768.jpeg This 1970 Datsun 240z set the F/GT class record (1976) of 166.037 mph at Bonneville with Nissan USA field engineer Bob Stockman behind the wheel. The car was stored in Nissan warehouses for decades until our client Randy acquired it from Nissan in 2020. The Bonneville Z-car is chassis HLS30-05834, built in June 1970. Never sold to the public, with only ~2300 miles. The exterior features the “G-nose”, a factory-made, 5-piece kit for the JDM-only Fairlady ZG (HS30-H) and created for Group 4 racing, The stripped interior houses a simple roll bar with integrated headrest. The steering wheel is a rare, “Ura Mach” unit. This leather/aluminum steering wheel was an available option to all S30s from Nissan sports/race, with the stock wheel being wood composite made by Izumi. Though available as optional parts, these seats and steering wheel were removed from a 432R and installed on the F/GT car as delivered from Japan by Nissan! In 2021 we performed a sympathetic restoration of the Bonneville Salt Flats Z. The original record setting motor prepared by Tom O’Connor and his team at Nissan was not available, so we installed a high-compression L28 built by BRE team member John Caldwell. It features triple-ph44 Mikuni’s with Harada intake, velocity stacks and Z Car Garage Heat Shield. The exhaust system includes a ceramic-coated header and side/rear exit all painted white. The dyno-tuned engine is backed by a low mileage 280zx close-ratio 5-speed with a JWT aluminum flywheel ad HD clutch. Power is sent through an R180 with 4.11 gearset complete with new bearings and hardware. Original Firestone Bonneville tires, and 15 inch steel wheels that were used during the record setting events are included in sale. Car was featured by Larry Chen in his YouTube video series, and won the Amelia Award in the 1961-’89 race car class at the 2025 Amelia Island Concours. Z Car Garage refreshed and prepared the ZX for racing in 2018. The drivetrain includes a dry-sump 3.2L Rebello race engine (approx 5 hrs) with triple-Mikuni ph44 carbs on a Nissan Competition intake manifold, Nissan Competition exhaust header with straight pipes into exhaust megaphones, 3.9 OS Giken LSD, ZCG CV Axles and 5 Speed Nissan Comp 2 Transmission. Suspension consists of Koni race shocks, period disc brakes and 16×10 Panasport C8 wheels. The interior features a full roll cage, fire suppression system and Sparco race seat. All of our clients finished the race and had a blast. Rob recaps the weekend… ROB: The David Love season opener for CSRG, man did it feel like it was forever since we’ve been on the race track. Kelly McCarty purchased Jim Froula’s #52 car so we did a little bit of prep to make sure it was ready to rock and Kelly was back in action. It was super awesome. Noah’s Bluebird was there and both Noah and Kenny are really picking up the pace, we worked on all the things that will keep us staying competitive and fun in the front. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_9105-1.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC04001-1685.jpg ROB: I will be driving the U2.5 Corky Bell Trans Am challenge car in both the Velocity Invitational event and the Rolex so we were sorting the car out. I had some really fun close racing with Tony Delane. He was kicking but in his 2002. We built this 510 in period and there wasn’t enough support in the fiberglass hood, so it was really funny to develop the “Fuller Flap” over the weekend The car was super competitive and now we know what to do to for a bit more juice. Super excited to be part of the B-Sedan group with Bell car. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/ZTB3844-1.jpg Video Watch Rob Fuller battle for P1 with Tony Delane in the BMW 2002 plus paddock action in the video below: Full in-car race video from Rob in the Corky Bell 510 is HERE Full in-car race video from Noah in the Bluebird Coupe is HERE Kenny’s Porsche 997 GT3 Cup http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/672689965_10242562804831111_2664955047530674860_n.jpg This very special Porsche is the 2006 FIA European GT3 Championship winning car that was driven by Sean Edwards. It is a 997 GT3 Cup S Prototype and our client Kenny Tse races this throughout the season with CSRG and Rolex events. ROB: Also on the racetrack was the Formula Ford group with a large field and they put on a great show. The Club Wheelhouse Classic Cup includes Porsche 996/997 cup cars with race livery and private cars that were built by Porsche. They had about 12 cars and it was really fun to watch them run. Both Kenny and Noah raced their 911s: Noah’s car is more developed 996 and both these guys are out there giving it the business. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_1684.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_1661.jpeg Vintage Spec Miata http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/VSM-Welcome-1024x831.jpg The Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) is excited to welcome Vintage Spec Miata (1990-1997) to all of their events! It’s nickname is Little Butters, Josh likes to call it “I can’t believe it’s not Butters” and then we picked the number 23 because we are Nissan dorks. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/IMG_3012.jpg ROB: Tom Dockery’s B-Sedan Datsun 510 is undergoing prep work for the upcoming Velocity Invitational and Rolex Reunion events. This is something that Tom has aspired to accomplish, his first time attending these two big shows. So he was driving Little Butters to get some seat time and then Ross “the hammer” Lindell was with us in the most important Miata, Randy Pobst’s first National Championship-winning Miata (1992). This car has only been a race car since it was built and it’s fantastic, full feature coming zcarblog. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_0733.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/IMG_2284.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_0781.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_0711.jpg A Fan-Friendly Race Event http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/674969437_10242562789990740_9088752356440010990_n.jpg Our friends from The Z Owners of Northern California (ZONC) hosted a car corral on Saturday to support the David Love Vintage Races at Sonoma Raceway! Super cool to see our clients Linda Williams’ 1972 Datsun 240Z OMS Pace Car Duplicate and Lora’s Series 240Z participating. LINDA: Great day at Sonoma Raceway on Saturday for the CSRG David Love Vintage Races. Congrats to Rob Fuller for the win on Saturday afternoon. What a fun race to watch with Rob moving into the front on the next to the last lap and pulling off a fantastic race in the Corky Bell 510 #40 ! The weather was perfect and not too warm. We had a good turnout for the car corral and getting to take 3 laps for the parade laps. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/674907506_10242562791590780_3371452625291067024_n.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/9D96401A-2B06-4B61-9368-3B5D911018D2.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/672688991_10242562800150994_1882864099175664933_n.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/672689998_10242562791550779_1745610825911166828_n.jpg A weekend of great racing and good times http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_9112.jpeghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_0716.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_0562.jpg We enjoyed sharing this experience with our friends and CSRG family. Since then he’s been Enjoying the Ride and recently completed his first track day at the world-famous Laguna Seca. Enjoy his track day report and read on for a summary of work we performed over the years. John’s Track Day at Laguna Seca http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/2645113848381480671.jpg JOHN: Here’s a report on my Track Day at Laguna Seca on 29 Nov 2025, with some history of my Z cars. The event was hosted by Turn8 Racing on Saturday 29 Nov. It was my first time, so was a member of the Beginner run group. I brought both of my Z cars but only drove the 1971 240Z on the track. There were many other types of cars in the run group, some new ones like a 911 G3 and a new Ferrari, but there was one other 240Z. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/1863114661573857814.jpg The first couple of runs were “lead-follow”, where we followed an actual race driver around the track to learn the proper race-line through the curves. For the remaining runs we were free to attempt to find the race-line on our own, which happened occasionally for me. It’s pretty obvious when I did not have the race-line since I was either in the dirt or was quickly approached by traffic from behind. I found the slower I went the easier it was to find the race-line. The Beginner run group only allowed passing on a couple of the straights (for this event), it was my track during the turns and my chance to learn to find the race-line so I felt it as ok to go slow. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PXL_20251129_231205632.jpg Of course, once in the straights, everybody passed me. By “everybody” I mean EVERY car on the track. They may have been going faster, but I was having a blast with my 240Z on the track. My smiles per mile was high. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/8843028960317112748-e1773877129977.jpg My favorite turn was turn 9, the sweeping left-hander out of the corkscrew. Probably because it’s challenging to judge the brake/coast/accellerate adjustments since the next turn (10) is slower right turn. It’s nice to “have” the whole track during the turns at the Beginner run group to try different approaches. The whole track is great, it’s Laguna Seca man! What fun. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/3396594018634975555.jpg I want to go back with my 1977 Lotus Esprit to see if I can beat my lap time in the 240Z. I expect that the Esprit will have faster laps since it seems to accelerate quicker out of turns and is closer to a race car than the Z. I had ZCG inspect the 240Z the week before the event to ensure that the brakes were up-to-snuff. They performed well, as expected since both of my Zs have the Z Car Garage Big-Brakes. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PXL_20251130_001746916.jpg ROB: John asked me about doing his first track day in his 240Z. I think the interest came from attending our Vintage Racing Events with his girls, eating snacks and hanging out at the track. I said why not? You’ve got brakes that can handle it and we know the car is safe. We did a tech-inspection on it, made sure everything was good to go and yes, John Bunker drove his S30 on the world famous WeatherTech Raceway also known as Laguna Seca. Good job John keep on loving the Z we can’t wait to work for your girls someday. The Z Cars http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/image001.jpg ROB: We met John around 2012 and did a bunch of work to his 240Z. He later acquired a 280Z and 280Z 2+2 so his daughters could ride with him. Both of these S30s have our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes. John and I have the same passion for music and he is just exactly why I love my job: he’s passionate and spends time enjoying and driving his Z cars. He also has a vintage Lotus that we’ve done some work on. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/IMG_7940-1.jpg JOHN: The 240Z is a 1971 model built in Oct 1970. My mom bought it in 1978 and I’ve been driving it since 1980 (45 years, yowza). My siblings and I used to ride in the hatch. (Why a mother of six bought a two-seat sports car is a point of discussion amongst us). It was her daily driver until about 2000 when she started having trouble getting in and out of it. She put about 250K miles on it and replaced the L24 engine with a rebuilt one from a 260Z. I bought it from her in 2005. In 2013 ZCG went through it and made it run as it should. We installed the Big Brake Kit, Panasport wheels, new tires, new headers, exhaust, and a suspension upgrade including Techno Toy T/C rods. It now has about 275K miles on the road and about 40 on the track. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_20230317_200010.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PXL_20250615_023830381.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/image002.jpg The other Z is a 1978 280Z. It was originallly owned by my mom’s neighbor. He traded it to my brother for some custom furniture in 2000. I bought it from my brother, then sold it to my niece, who sold it to her brother. It sat in the driveway of his mother (my sister)’s house for a few years until I bought it from my nephew in 2019 where it went straight to ZCG for a Big Brake Kit, new Panasport wheels, tires, and a suspension upgrade. It has about 195K miles. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/483107251_2886644794842024_5198266158316059758_n-e1773877101473.jpg Both are daily drivers, mostly. I can’t take my two daughters in them (well, not legally), so it’s usually just me in the car going to work. There is a third Z car, a 1976 2+2, intended to take the whole family, but we will not talk about that here. These are multi-generation family cars. The goal is for my girls to continue the Z-car tradition when they get older. Z Car Garage Big-Brakes http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/IMG_5676-1024x768.jpg In 2020 we installed our ZCG Big-Brakes on John’s 240Z, giving him the ability to brake on a dime, perform well and daily drive. This is the same brake kit as seen on “Mrs. Butters”, our 1971 Series 1 240z shop demo car (above). http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/RR-41719-138-e1563913666121-1024x594.jpg As fellow S30 owner/racer Glenn C mentioned in his review, on top of braking performance, pedal feel is extremely important and our Big-Brakes deliver. This is a direct result of working with Stoptech to create a totally bolt-in solution requiring no M/C change or additional proportioning valve/adjustments. All fitting behind a 15″ Watanabe or Panasport wheel and retaining factory emergency brake lever! A few details below: Calipers: Stoptech ST42 4-piston front & rear race calipers (Alum 6061 mil-spec Type III anodized) Rotors: 280mm x 20.6 with Alum 7075 hats Pads: Stoptech 309 sport street pads Blog posts documenting all of our customers running the ZCG Big-Brakes can be found HERE. The Z also received suspension parts from Techno Toy Tuning including their adjustable T/C rods.We really appreciate Gabriel and his staff. They make some of the best suspension parts out there for Z cars. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/RR-41719-154-1024x768.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/IMG_0031-rotated.jpg ZCG Big-brakes up front: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/IMG_0099.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/IMG_0032-rotated.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/IMG_0063-rotated.jpg T3 T/C rods and new brake master cylinder/booster, clutch hydraulics: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/RR-41719-202-1-e1606630907243.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/12/IMG_0057.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/DSCN3345.jpg At the rear, the factory drum brakes were replaced with our ZCG Big-Brakes. 24. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0080.jpg John Morton was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame on March 9-10, 2026 in Daytona Beach. The official induction ceremony was held during the 38th Annual Induction Celebration Presented by Toyota Gazoo Racing. Z Car Garage was honored to attend this milestone for our hero and inspiration to motorsport enthusiasts worldwide. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/312182441_483798780461966_6814874755748199404_n-1024x768.jpg From the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America: “The ageless Morton first made headlines in the early 1970s as lead driver for 2022 MSHFA [Motorsports Hall of Fame of America] inductee Peter Brock and his BRE Datsuns, winning consecutive SCCA C Production national championships (1970, 1971) in the outfit’s 240Zs and consecutive Trans-Am Under 2.5 titles (1971, 1972) in BRE 510s, winning 12 of 19 starts. Nevertheless, Morton didn’t attract many top professional rides until the late ’80s. He won twice in 11 starts in 1987 in underpowered Group 44, Inc. Jaguar XJR-7 GTPs owned by 2018 MSHFA inductee Bob Tullius and four times in eight starts in the top-rated Electramotive Nissan GTP cars in 1988. Other noteworthy results include a stunning second overall and first in IMSA GTO at the 1979 Rolex 24 at Daytona in a Ferrari 365 GTB/4, first in Group C2 at the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans and first overall in the 1985 L.A. Times GP in a Porsche 962. He continued winning into the 2000s. At the 50th annual SCCA Runoffs in 2013, Morton, age 71, started 13th and finished 10th despite having only a few practice sessions in the car.” http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_6949.jpg Highlights from the event included the unveiling of the John Morton display case, which will be showed for one year and the John Morton bronze portrait which will be permanently displayed in the MSHF. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_3205.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0068.jpg Video It was great to see John (currently 84 years of age) up on the stage giving his speech. Watch the induction ceremony with words from John and his peers in this video: Reception Highlights ROB: It was announced last year that John Morton would be joining the class of 2026 Motorsports Hall of Fame, alongside luminaries including Peter Brock (2022). Our client and friend Randy Jaffe also attended the event, bringing both the BRE Datsun 510 and 240Z race cars to the track and museum for display: http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0059-1-e1773470486877.jpg Highlights for me: Rusty Wallace was a one of the key speakers and I also recognized ESPN/NASCAR commentator Marty Smith. Lots of famous people were there like Nissan driver Elliot Forbes-Robinson, Kenny Roberts Sr. and Jr. both MotoJP champs when 2-strokes kind of ruled that series. It was really cool. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_3211.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0060.jpg Mike Debbie Rogers brought their narrow-bodied Cobra which is 1 of 32 ever made and it was a real spectacle. People were freaking out, taking photos with John since considering his connection to Shelby American. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0061-e1773793127487.jpghttp://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0066.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0096.jpg We also spotted a few Z cars at the event! http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0025-e1773791333374.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0029-e1773791311935.jpg It was a blast to have drinks with Randy, Joe Cavaglieri, Steve Johnson, Charlie from Honda R&D and a bunch of awesome people. We heard amazing stories of other inductees as the MSHF not only recognizes automotive motorsports: winningest driver in Unlimited Hydroplane history Dave Villwock (Powerboats) and NHRA competition director Steve Gibbs (Drag Racing). Incredible time and we loved seeing John Morton recognized for such an amazing career. http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/ba14d3a0-1da5-45cd-b8d2-a65bfe88e651.jpg http://www.zcarblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/IMG_0095.jpg Please join us in congratulating John for this achievement!
