Introduce yourself to the class?
I'm a 53 year old retired grocery clerk. I am married (2nd) with one child (23 year old son) and my wife has one child (29 year old daughter) both from previous relationships. She is 47. We have 4 grandchildren. We have been married some 6+ years and it is the best move I have ever made. I have been into Datsuns since the early 70's and have owned many including the 510 (3), a roadster (70 1600), 2 520's, a 620, my present 320, Z's (70, 72, and my present 78), 3 A10's (78,79,80), 1 84 Pulsar NX, 81 200SX, and my present 79 810 2dr. My vehicles are not restorations per se, but clean and complete drivers. I do not have a fortune invested in them as some seem to. The most modified of the three is the 320. That was mainly to make it freeway worthy. It has a J16 with a sidedraft weber, a header, 200sx 5spd, roadster differential, etc. The others are basically stock. The 810 is my daily driver but I get equal enjoyment from all three of them. I am a 'Datsun' fan. I don't care much for any of the ZX's or the 350Z. I'm not knocking those cars. They just aren't my personal prefference. The only 'Nissan' I ever personally owned was a 1993 NX 1600 although the 200sx had both Datsun and Nissan badges on it. I'm not much into the front wheel drive cars though I have owned a couple. (Pulsar NX, NX 1600) This site is the most informative and entertaining Datsun/Nissan site I have ever come across. I visit at least daily.

Z video
The next airing of the Nissan Z documentary will be Friday November, 28 @ 11pm EST on History Channel International. This is the only listing I was able to find as you can only search up to two weeks ahead on their site. I will post other listings as I find them.

Turn Signals....
Check the plug behind the console below the dash on the right side. It's a 10 wire connector. Make sure all of the wires are making good contact.

Deal Cyl. - '83 280zx
You might try pulling the valve cover an checking to see if one of the rockers has slipped of the valve. When I purchased my 78 in 1997 the PO thought it needed a valve job and it turned out to be that.

Z video
This program, apparently, airs on 'History Channel International' rather than the regular History Channel. I had searched months to find it. I recorded it today. History Channel International is only available on digital cable or dish tv. It's not on regular cable. As soon as I find out when its next airing is, I will reply again to this thread. It is pretty much like everyone says but it is still a worthwhile addition to any Z enthusiasts collection.

Elephant oil cap
I'm done with this thread!

Elephant oil cap
I don't think they are "rare" as I have several of both types in my parts bin. I have two types with elephants on them as shown in the picture. The one that says only 'OIL' on it I believe was an aftermarket replacement. (not shown)

H4 headlight replacement
Has anyone tried the new Sylvania Silver Star headlights? I put a set on my 810 coupe and the are a more than considerable improvement over the stock lights. Sylvania claims that they are as bright as HID lighting. They are available in just about all configurations. They don't require any modification to the lighting system, just plug them in! Definately worth looking into!

78 280 help..ALAN?
If it had electric mirrors it was a ZX. That is based on my knowlege of Z cars in the USA. I am still learning when it comes to the other markets. This site is the most informative one when it comes to that. We didn't get any 2 litre Z cars over here. Or Fairlady Z's for that matter although you see many here retrofitted with that badge. The 78 280Z was the last of the first generation. Many of its major body parts are interchangeable with the early cars.

Post pic of your Z and your home
Here is a picture that shows my 3 Datsuns (Dattos?). I don't have one that shows the entire house but isn't the garage the most important part anyway?

What is it???
After further research (looking under the hood of my 79 810 Coupe) that bracket angles the oil filter upwards so that the power steering lines can pass through to the steering rack. I don't see a part number on it. I'll remove it and take a good look next oil change.

Zeds on history channel
The only people that equate ZX'z with Z's are people that own ZX's! As far as I am concerned, the last Z was the 1978. 79 to 84 ZX's are good parts donors for the earlier cars and the 300 and 350 don't really belong in a discussion of 'The Datsun Z'.

Rear tow/tie down?
If you are refering to the two hooks on either side beneath and behind the bumper, they are original equipment. They were used to tie the car down during shipping. They might have been removed from your car since they bolt on through the splash pan. On my 78 280Z there are three grade 12 bolts holding them on on each side. There are also two located in the front. If you look inside the fenderwell ahead of the tire, you will see them. I think all cars use some form of these. I have seen them used as a point to hook up a tow strap or chain. I personally wouldn't recommend that.

What is it???
I believe the mount you are refering to is a factory item. On my 79 810 (L24E) it appears that it is there to move the oil filter so that the air conditioning lines can pass through that area. I have also seen this on ZX's. My 78 Z does not have it but it has aftermarket a/c and I am not sure if the 240-280 with factory air would have this bracket. I can't see a part number on it and there is no refference to it in my 79 810 service manual.

I'm guessing you can trust the seller here ...
Troy is a good guy. I have done business with him as well as seeing him at many Datsun/Nissan shows in SoCal. I have seen this car and other examples of his/their work. (Too Intense Restoration). They do a very thorough job, top to bottom, bumper to bumper, inside and out. This is a good car and an instant show winner!

an odd one
Odd, indeed! I wouldn't waste the time. If I wanted a Shelby, I'd buy a Shelby. (Asuming that I could afford it!) But to turn a Z into something that is neither a Shelby nor any longer a Z is an abomination! Just my $.02 worth. Stephen Blakeney 1978 280Z coupe 1979 810 2dr 1964 L320 pickup

2 fuel pumps, 1 big problem
I stand corrected. That's what I get for trusting my memory! Steve.

Victor, what did you decide on the 810?

2 fuel pumps, 1 big problem
240z's didn't have electric fuel pumps. 260z's had a mechanical as well as a suplimentary electric fuel pump. 280z's have an electric fuel pump only since they are fuel injected. If you car has an electric fuel pump, someone added it on. If you also have a mechanical fuel pump check to see if eccentric that drives it is there in front of the camshaft gear. I say this because you say you have an L28 which would have been originally fuel injected and would not have the eccentric installed. Therefore, there would be nothing to drive the mechanical fuel pump. Anyway, there would be no relay unless the person who installed the electric fuel pump added one. An add on electric fuel pump is usually wired to the 'on' side of the ignition switch. The problem, like Victor said, is that fuel is being pumped whenever the ignition is on whether or not the engine is running so I would also put a cutoff swithch in that power line to the fuel pump. i sound like a biplane!
Try Summit Racing. They have a good assortment of mufflers including their own brand which are very good for the price. I have one on my 64 L320 and one on my 79 810. They aren't loud but you can hear them when you get on it. If memory serves me correctly they are only $14.75 each for a 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" center/offset which is what a Z uses. KLACK KLACK KLACK What the HELL??
When I bought my 78 in 1997, it had the same problem. The previous owner thoght it had major problems since you basically lose that cylinder. He sold it to me for $275! I fixed the rocker, adjusted the valves and checked to find that it had full compression! It's paint was faded so i had it painted, 'iron cross' wheels which I had stacked in the garage, sheepskins, a stereo, and that's basically it to this day! Take a look at it in my gallery. OT - 810 Sports Coupe
After further research, I have verified that the 810 2dr was only available from 7/78 to 9/79. I went back and found the January 1979 Road and Track which has a road test on the 79 810 coupe. It was not avaialble as a 77 or 78. The were only available in 79 and early 80 although the 80's were actually late 79's. The 80 810/Maxima had a more rectangular design. I have done considerable research on these cars. I looked for one for over 6 years before buying the one I presently own. I have parts lists, manuals, magazine articles, ads, etc. I know pretty much what parts are available and what parts aren't. I had to order my outer window squeeges from Rare Spares in Australia! They were actually for a 200B coupe which is the Australian version of the 810. But, anyway, that 810 coupe that Victor speaks of that is listed as a 78 has to be a 79. I have attached a picture of my 79 810 2dr. Steve Blakeney 1979 810 2dr 1978 280Z coupe 1964 L320 Pickup
