  1. How do you test the fuel pump? The FSM says to remove the oil pressure switch or alternator L connector. Where??? To the relay?? Useless info to me because it's too vague.
  2. I have posted several times incorrectly in the S30 forums. Now I have it straight. I'm trying to start a 79 that has set up for two years. the PO replaced the starter and didn't wire the starter ground back so when I tried to start it the wire going from ignition to the coil cooked. (I had replaced the fusible link with a wire too thick) So, many lessons learned I'm trying to get it started. I'm not getting spark at the plugs. I noticed the coil is getting hot...very hot..with the ignition ON. It may be bad. It started leaking after a few minutes. I will replace it tomorrow night and try again. Any help would be appreciated. This is my 16 year old daughter's car and we have been working on it for almost a month. I REALLY want to hear it run before we spend money on the interior.
  3. Update: Tried to start it. No luck. I'm not hearing the fuel pump. Guess I will test for voltage. At least there were no smoking wires this time!
  4. I traced the short to the fusebox then to the wire that runs to the brake light switch-then to the ASCD tail stop lamp sensor. After seeing the rust under the ASCD Control Unit I understand why it's a problem. I hope the short stops there. More updates later... Putting the wiring harness back together.
  5. Nevermind on the relay. I found it
  6. Replaced the fusible link with 20amp fuses. Replaced all the shorted wiring. When I turn on the ignition the 20 amp fuse going to the ignition relay blows. Anyone know the pin ID on the ignition relay. I'm trying to test it.
  7. Crap. Who sells a Br Br Gr fusible link? I can't find one. Should I just punt and replace the whole thing with actual fuses?
  8. I knew I was in the Z forum. I posted here just in case the seller was right and the seats interchanged between the two series. I had my doubts. Thanks for confirming them.
  9. Doing a full reupholstering job on my daughters 79. I'm looking to buy seat foam cushions from a guy. He says they fit 77-79. Is this right? It's the high back
  10. I repaired all the wiring. Getting ready to install the restored and freshly painted dash. Before I try to crank it again I was wondering if there is a regular fuse option for the ignition? I'm ordering a new fusible link as well but don't want to cook it.
  11. Sorry!! That would help wouldn't it....DUH
  12. Got the dash out. Evidently there are a few changes between the S30 and the S130. The burned wire is burned from the ignition switch all the way to the coil. While it is almost completely devoid of insulation it doesn't seem to have burned into any other wires. I'm really glad I had to remove the dash. This car was NASTY. Mice, dirt dobbers, brown recluse spiders etc. Giving it all a good cleaning. Will also repair and paint the dash and replace the rotted speakers while it's out.
  13. None of the links work. I can search
  14. Update: found the burning wire. It's the Black wire with white stripe. It's the wire that goes from the neg terminal of the ignition coil to the ignition switch. It has burned away the insulation way up into the harness and it looks like it was fused with the White wire with black stripe. I'm trying to get the dash off but it's a chore. Is there a post with instructions on removing the dash? I really appreciate your help guys!
  15. Great! The smoke is coming from inside the dash. So I guess the dash has to come off
  16. Scratch that. The wiring from the 83 has a burned ground as well. I think it's the part that connects to the coil negative. It's burned at least 12 inches down the harness. Not being an electrical genius, what's the best way to test for a short to ground?
  17. May just replace the wiring from the 83 parts car
  18. Update: Tried to crank it again today with gas. No luck, more wires smoking. Not nearly as bad as before but still there even with the ignition on the wires smoke. Dang! Is there another engine ground other than the one on top of the engine with the harness?
  19. Brown recluse spiders. And I'm borderline arachnophobic...
  20. OK guys, I think we are good to go. Followed your advice..mostly. Ran the existing 2 gauge cable to the top starter bolt and also ran a 4 gauge from the top starter bolt to the chassis where the cable was connected before. Then I ran a 10 gauge wire from the neg terminal across to the engine wiring harness ground. Now the wires are not heating up during starting. Currently the car is under plastic with a bug bomb inside and under the car. It will sit there until Thursday evening when I will add some gas and try to get it started. Thanks and I will update Thursday
  21. I'm planning on bolting it to the top starter bolt. That sound good? I will run one end to the chassis ground or should I take it to the clamp?
  22. I have a good chassis ground but there is no engine ground. The cable I have will not reach so I'm headed to the parts store for a jumper.
  23. Previous owner seems to have screwed up the starter/Battery wiring. The - cable from the battery is grounded to the chassis but there is another place for it to ground but I can't see where. The cable has 2 lugs.
  24. Trying to bring a 79 back to life. Had to re attach the fusible link wires. Now when I hit the starter the condenser wire smokes and also the ignition power jumper wire in the fusible link.
