  1. Okay, that makes sense. So on the 280z, up to what year can I look for a manual box--all models? As far as the flywheel goes, will a L28 flywheel fit on my L26? Thanks!
  2. Will it work? I would love to go from auto to manual in my 260, but just not sure which transmissions will fit in it. Really want a 5sp.

Yup, that's the place where the rust is, I'm pretty sure. Okay, so what if the wheel tub is rusted back by the passengers foot area, could it lead to damage on the body itself?

So I have rust on the side panels just four inches in front of the rear tires on both sides. I also have rust in the wheel wells . This is pretty significant and goes through the entire material. What is the best step in fixing this problem? Eventually the entire body needs to come off for painting, etc, but for now I would like to get these taken care of. What are the wheel wells even made out of? It seems really thing and almost fiberglass like....

So, I got my 260z, and I love it. Runs great, but I want to swap out motors for a LS1, etc. Here's my problem. I'm going to med school soon and don't have time to delve into a huge project. I have two options: 1. Start the project anyway 2. Store the car Now here's the catch, if I store the car, I want it to remain dry and in good running condition for 4 years. Is that going to happen? If I start the project, I need to paint the entire car inside and out and get the rust spots taken care of first. I plan on painting by myself. How long is it to prep the car for taking the body off and then taking the body off? I have a dilemma, a serious dilemma. Help!
  6. Good advice. I'll do both right away. After that I'll do the water pump if necessary. Yes, good call on the bolts. I believe most water pumps I saw offered online came with the bolts.
  7. :paranoid: That is going to have to be my least favorite thing. .... Sorry, I had to say it.
  8. You guys are a wealth of knowledge! Thanks! I know so much about camaros, but hardly anything about this car. I am using an after market temp gauge. Graduated, but a cheapie that was on there when I bought it. I am certain it is fairly accurate, however. Yes, I agree it's running too hot. At one point while driving 80, The cap on the radiator let off some serious water all over the hood because of pressure. I think that means it's time for a coolant flush. I might consider throwing a new water pump on there as well. What do you guys think? How can I get this thing a little more cooler? Going 75 I was hitting 230, and I really don't like that.

Fantastic idea. Yeah this car is awesome, but it needs a new dash, two gauges need to be fixed, and the panels are missing. Besides that, mechanically perfect. I think I will go ahead and look for some junked 260s, then. Thanks!
  10. And I thought it had four gears. Dangit.....I feel like an idiot now. So it IS working just fine. So my RPMs stay at around 3000 if I want to go 60, but the freeways where I live are 75, and that takes me up to like...3800 RPMs. So that leaves me with two more quick questions: 1. Is it okay to run 8 hours driving at 3800 RPMs? 2. The car heats up to about 230 degrees if I maintain 3800 RPMs. Is this normal? Should I upgrade to keep the engine cooler? I just have to drive this from Montana to western Washington, but am I stuck going like 60 the whole way?
  11. Hey guys, need a bit of help. I have a 74 260z with an auto transmission. The tranny shifts great, but will not slip into 4th gear. It's literally as simple as that. No weird noises, no grinding. As far I can tell, 1-3 feels brand new. So my question is whether or not there is a typical problem and solution to fix this, or if the entire tranny is bad? If it is as simple as replacing a bearing or making an adjustment, I'll drop it myself and replace the part. If not, should I get a new tranny or take it in to a shop? One thing I suspect is that this car was dragged at some point because it has triple weber carbs, straight pipes, oil circulator, and direct tank-engine fuel lines (the mechanical pump isn't even being used). Would the guy have removed 4th (IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?). Anyway, thanks guys!

Dave, Thanks for the suggestions, they were very helpful. I suppose then that the door panels are missing altogether, because directly under the fabric is what appears to be sheet metal. Not very impressive, in my opinion. What I intend to do is place the padding on the metal, then the upholstery material over this. It's really all I can think of right now since a previous owner just glued fabric on the metal.

Great, exactly what I wanted to hear. I was looking back over it and decided that I liked vinyl better, anyway. Alright, so my next question is, what do I place under the material if I want it to be soft? The doors are metal, and I just don't want to glue the material right on. I would rather put a thin layer of some kind of foam under the fabric first. What do you call that stuff and what kind should I get?

True, then I guess my real question is what type of material will hold up best on the door panels and back strut towers.

Alright guys. I want the interior of the car to look like this (well, with these colors and seats (http://www.zcars.com.au/userimages/user1093_1175231422.jpg). So I have two questions, both of which I am stuck on: 1. Candy apple or ruby red? I am thinking ruby red because it has an ever so slightly darker and richer look to it. 2. Here is the one I am really stuck on....what kind of car upholstery should I get? I am doing it myself, but should I get tweed or vinyl? I know vinyl holds up a bit more, but I like the feel of tweed a little more. Suggestions? Thanks!

Pictures are up guys! I decided just to use photobucket. Needs a tad bit of work, but was so fun to drive up from CO! http://s337.photobucket.com/albums/n363/justin1390/260z/

Oh....that is probably one of the sexiest sounding mufflers ever! Any other suggestions? That one has me sold though! It sounds perfect at high RPMs.

Hi guys! Just buying a 260z this weekend from a buddy in CO and I like ot stay connected with other people who have the same cars as me. A little history: My first car was a 1999 Honda Accord which was given to me when I was 16. It was a great car and very reliable. Once in college, I wanted to get rid of it and buy something more functional, such as a truck since I am really into outdoors and horses. A buddy of mine ended up getting me into cars, and I went the other direction and bought a Camaro z28 instead. 0-60 in 5.7 seconds had me hooked on the speed. So now 6 months later I am adding to my obsession with cars and working on them and buying a 260z. Glad to be joining you all on the forum! Take care!

Hey there guys! I am buying a 260z this weekend and it has straight pipes all the way back. Way too loud to drive around. I want to put a new system in, but I want it to sound higher pitched than lower pitched. I'm thinking a supra or corvette-ish sound. Any suggestions for me? I have Magna-Flow on my Camaro and it's very loud and deep sounding (awesome!), so I want to stay away from the muscle car sound.
