    I felt my sphincter tighten when I saw that pic. I can rework the headlamp bucket. Had to do both of mine but it gave me the opportunity to get the fit better as well at the front of the fender. Sorry about that......been there!

    The main thing that you are failing to judge is you are trying to fit a part on a car with a 7 seven year build date difference. Our cars grew in almost every dimension year upon year and many body panels are simply not interchangeable. Trust me I have some late 72 doors and they never fit right on my 1970 #6333. These cars were as close to hand made as possible and still employ the assembly line method. Bumpers being the one exception I can think of at the moment. I have taken many apart and no two are alike inside and out. The best I could suggest is find another hood closer to your build model. Mind you the early hoods trapped lots of moisture and were prone to rot. A Z parts salvage might be an option. It looks like a previous owner had the same issue. It may eventually work but with much modification. If the two connecting points for the fender at the base of the wind screen are bolted down there is almost no way to compensate for gaps by moving the fenders. The hood that will properly fit yours does not have vents and is a different distance from the base of the wind screen to the nose. I have a hood for my 1970 but it is currently being revived also. Many people don't like them but I'm leaning towards a carbon hood for mine and paint it to match. No more rust issues but fitment could even be an issue with those. Anyway good luck!

    Since you went inside the valve cover not long ago remove it again to inspect for something that may have come undone. If it wasn't doing it before chances are the torque on something may have backed off or something else may have worked it's way loose. Oil could be your issue but I would inspect under valve cover.

    That's what I was thinking.......freeze plug. Generally leaks are not difficult to find.

    Oh yeah I forgot if you have an external voltage regulator it may be approaching the end of it's life. But fortunately there is a conversion kit that allows you to install the 83ZX alternator with internal regulator. MSA sells the conversion and so does Dave. Good luck!

    D. HANSON Very nice machine. All the panels seem to line up nicely. Will it stay as it is or do you plan performance modifications? I have the headlight upgrade yet to install it though, haven't heard anything BAD about it so let us know! CONGRATULATIONS.

  12. Whatever the frying sound was THAT ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO BE FOUND! Check the connection on the back of your ammeter. Make sure it hasn't gotten damp. You mentioned some firewall rust so it is likely something behind the dash may have gotten wet. Pulling the dash is not difficult and a lot easier to work behind out of the car. I had a fire back in 2005 as a result of poor ammeter connections. I'm still putting the car back together. Completely fried the main harness down to the alternator. It started behind the ammeter.     Yeeeeeeaaah I'm with you! These 1 off "CONVERSIONS" if you will, seem to take away more than they add. Seems to ruin a beautiful design. At first glance I didn't even know it was a Datsun. I one one in SOCAL years ago and felt the same then. Too bad to ruin such a nice machine.

    Good lesson. Maybe that's why the SF70H is doing so well this season. My wife no doubt will have her chest pushed out because she is Dutch and Shell is a Dutch company.

  24. I have been poking my nose at this conversation on and off over the past few weeks. Finally had a chance to chime in. Not sure where and when the insult and apology began and finished but everyone seemed to forget about the car. Maybe the insult just was so subliminal it went right over my head. But back to the car, it seems it was purchased with no exit strategy. Before ANYTHING has been done to it it's value is being assessed. To answer your question about value it's worth nothing to anyone else in it's current state although to you it could be priceless. Not sure I would have thrown in on this one considering the difficulty factor in putting it back on the road. LHD....RHD doesn't really matter to most enthusiasts other than WOW factor. The car in and of itself does that. Bantering price will always get sharp responses because we all value our cars. Price will draw a quicker response than mechanical issues mostly because practically all known issues can be solved mostly because of the expertise of those on this site. Put it back together, document well, don't cut any corners and then come talk to us about what it's worth. Good luck!
