Electro-Plating Tailight Trim?
Can you explain the stripping process. I would imagine the prep work is key to a quality finish. Thanks, John

What is the Correct Early Series 1 Rim Size
The seller that I am meeting next week said the rims have silver on the inside and black on the outside. Does that mean something special or were all rims that color scheme?

I might be buying a 240 parts car
Mike, Your not in the Boca area, are you?

I might be buying a 240 parts car
I don't think that anyone said Mike is being scammed. It just sounds like a fishy story from the seller. I am skeptical of the the sellers story and would recommend backing away from that deal if it were still active.

I might be buying a 240 parts car
Why would someone pay 1200 or more to ship it to California. Search almost any county in CA and you will find plenty of parts cars for sale. As stated earlier, sounds like a scam. John

What is the Correct Early Series 1 Rim Size
Thanks Gary. I emailed the seller hoping to "fish" for info before I meet my guy. You never know, they may be stamped 01/70 and I won't need my guy.

What is the Correct Early Series 1 Rim Size
Thanks Arne. He claims he has been "hoarding" parts for 29 years and is now parting with them. I will check the dates on the 5.5's and snap some pictures if they are early. Again, any idea of what I should expect to pay?

What is the Correct Early Series 1 Rim Size
No Carl, I meant the rims he had. I have not seen a picture yet. Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for. The "optional" aluminum wheels were on my '71 when I bought it back in '81. That car was totaled in 82, about 1 month after a rebuild. Thanks again Carl. Any idea of what I should expect to pay? You make it sound like they may be more common than this guy thinks. I am heading out there to pick up an e31 head (he has 3) and some series 1 latch belts so the trip will be worth it either way but I dont want to overpay for rims, especially when I dont need them for 8 months.

What is the Correct Early Series 1 Rim Size
I have been reading past threads and came across a thread the Arne started back in '06 when he bought his wheels and "D" caps. He mentioned the early rims being "skinny" 4.5" rims. Would a 01/70 240 have been sold with these "skinny" rims? Were the wider rims (I'm guessing 6") available as an option in 01/70? Have "D" caps, need wheels to put them on now. (cart before the horse thing. yeah, I know) :stupid: One more question, I have been told by "the" parts guy (literally the only parts guy within 4 hours of the twin cities) that these are the skinny rims. Before I get taken for a ride does anybody know what a set of 4 of these rims would go for in "great" shape with no rust? Just a ballpark figure. TIA, John

Reverting back from an electronic ignition
You are grossly over estimating my abilities. I think I need to find a recently unemployed machinist in the Twin Cities..... I should send my father in law back to work. He was a machinist for 32 years, just retired in 2003. Now he has no access to the tools. Well thanks for the input Jimmy. I think I will try to find the parts first and then hit up black dragon if all else fails. I have time. I just pulled the motor and tranny on Sunday and have yet to start on tearing down the engine compartment. Plan on having it in the shop for body work and paint in January. I did find a parts source near me and will be driving out to pick up just about everything I need in about 10 days. He had a E31 head with 88,000 on it, 4 rims, series 1 belts in restored condition, metal "datsun" emblems (been looking for these for a while now), a seek/scan radio (working), apron corners and jack/toolkit. A good find! If he has a distributor for me I'll be set. Thanks again.

Reverting back from an electronic ignition
That is exactly what I want for this car. It is in too good of condition to do anything other than a concourse restoration. Now, after this one, when I pick up a nice 71 or 72, I will keep the engine and tranny original but after that all bets are off! I think I will keep the Hays ignition until then.

Hey All you Minnesota Z'ers
Yeah, mine might be ready by late summer/early fall if I am lucky, just in time for a North Shore trip, aaahhhh..... falling leaves and screaming z's I don't have a distro either. I am actually going to be reverting back to points and condensor from electronic ignition soon. PO made the changes back in 76. I have a post here asking what needs to be done. Many thanks to JimmyZ for all the help! Any good datsun mechanics in this area? I figure while I have the engine out I would have the engine looked at. I am also looking for an E31 head that is service-able. Let me know.

Reverting back from an electronic ignition
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys. I'll be pulling the engine this week as part of my restoration. I should probably line up the parts soon so they dont hold up the project. Jimmy, is there any way of telling if the PO replaced the distributor or just gutted it? Zealous, That would be cool if you could. John

Hey All you Minnesota Z'ers
We're talking 95 through afton and down to Bailey road I think. Lots of winding roads and blind approaches with a great canopy of trees. If we put a ride together you are always welcome.

Reverting back from an electronic ignition
Thanks for the input Jimmy. I have attached some pics as you requested. It appears that the "guts" are MIA although much of the wiring as you describe it is intact. In the distributor picture you can see the inside of the distributor, the second shot is of the wiring coming off the coil. The yellow and red wires appear to come off of the harness that is attached to the Hays Ignition. Of the 5 wires that come off the Hays the red and white go to the coil along with a black/white wire from the harness that looks like runs from the radiator. A black wire from the Hays harness runs to the firewall and is the ground and the green wire and yellow wire run to the distibutor. It looks like the wire that runs to the thermostat sender is there but was taped up like they cut a wire off and taped it up. Maybe the old wire that runs to the distro is in there? Under the coil is what looks like a resistor of some sort. It is a ceramic block with connectors on it. A thick black wire goes closest to the firewall and a Green wire goes closest to the radiator. You can see this in the pictures. In the picture of the wiring near the distributor you can see where the Hays harness plugs into the existing distributor harness. It takes the yellow and green wires from the Hays and connects them to the Green and Red going to the distributor. I also unwrapped the tape and found a connector inside. It appears to be black in color but I dont know where it would go. Well, I will go back through your post and see what I missed. I will post back here after I go through your link. Thanks for the help.

Reverting back from an electronic ignition
I am planning my restore and came across a Hays ignition that was installed in 76 by the PO. What is involved with reverting back to points and condensor? The first pic below is the ignition mounted on the drivers side wheel well. The second picture is of a box on the passenger side wheel well. Every picture I have seen of other series 1 z's dont have this box (relay???). And the third picture is of the fine paint job that was applied over the gold paint by the PO. It just flakes off in some areas. I wish it would all flake off and get me back to the original color. I am trying really hard to get the car back to all original. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, John

Hey All you Minnesota Z'ers
95 is a cool road to take with any sports car. I have yet to take it with my z but will add that to the list of "must take" rides. On that list is the north shore, WI side of the Mississippi down through prescott, into red wing and down through Lake City and back up through durand WI and 94 back home. that should be about a 3 hour trip. Maybe i'll see you out there. I'll be in the Gold 240.

"D" Cap Stamped Number
Wow, who woulda thunk it. So much about hub caps. Well, I guess that means I will be selling a set of "later" series 1 caps and continue my quest for period correct ones. Thanks for input, I am pretty sure a few of us learned something here. John

Ebay....what parts can be trusted for my 240Z?
Thanks for the link Mike. Why isn't anything like this available on ebay? I would think you guys could generate a little revenue by offering it on ebay. Is there a list of active Nissan part numbers out there somewhere? That would be a nice list to have. John

"D" Cap Stamped Number
they are stamped "IKI Made In Japan", but it is along the edge near the valve stem opening. I guess it doesn't matter as long as it is period correct. Would I need the larger tabs for a 01/70 Z? (or doesn't it matter)
