  1. Any idea what a guy might expect to pay for a re-chrome of 4 caps?
  2. The term “Cylinder Index” (CI) was coined by Joe Soucheray, a columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and a radio talk-show host here in the Twin Cities. ( http://www.am1500.com/gl/index.shtml , check it out) He hosts a show called Garage Logic. Here is a quote from the Mayor of Garage Logic: Back to the CI. You calculate it by adding up all the cylinders of internal combustion engines that you have in your household. That includes cars and trucks and other fun rides that you don’t drive every day; original engines for those car/other rides, any other crate engine, other car/truck engines that you have the parts to build, motorcycles and ATVs, tractors, lawnmowers, boats, snow blowers, Roto-Tillers, leaf blowers, chain saws, ice augers, gas-powered generators and other powered tools, even those old Cox gas-powered scale model C2 split-window coupes with .049-cubic-inch single-cylinder engines. Pretty any item with an Internal Combustion Engine. Having a large CI is just like having a lot of tools…or a lot of anything that’s considered “guy stuff,” even though the CI is something that can be calculated by anyone, anywhere, any time. The way Joe explains it is that an acceptable CI is equal to or greater than your age. I am 43 and my cylinder index should be 43. It is only 26,:disappoin but I will be adding to it soon. Looking for a 84 Mustang GT and a 78 Fiat spider. What's your CI?
  3. Try the archives. I found the issue by filling in the search info. Looks like they will get you what you are looking for. http://www.classicandsportscar.com/archives_home.asp Looks like the Z has been featured 11 times, but not since 2002.

Woke up this morning and the temp was 7 below. I have cable heat in the garage floor. I keep the garage at 50 all winter long. Just warm enough to wear jeans and a flannel and still feel comfortable. Still hurts like he** when you bang a knuckle though:hurt: Now to the garage: 2005 Toyota Highlander Limited (Wife's DD) 2005 Ford F-150 King Ranch Super Crew (My DD) 1970 240Z in full restoration, pictured below (My Toy) 2003 Craftsman DGT 6000 Garden Tractor with 48" snow thrower and chains Power Wheels Barbie Jeep (5 year old daughters DD) Various other gas powered tools And a big, hungry dog that doesn't like strangers!
  6. All this interest seems to have driven up the price on these to a fairly high price for a set needing restoration (imo) that don't truly match. All that and the seller's reserve wasn't even met....
  7. Thanks for the info. Will come in handy to some but I am looking for an exact replacement for mine and I have a 4 speed. John
  8. Boy, that looks very similar to what I have in my car right now. The thing that throws me off is I found a plate welded to the top tank that says "Ray's Radiator Repair". Maybe the PO just had it recored. I will look at pictures and compare. Thanks for the post!
  9. Thanks John, I am in no rush. Just PM me when you get some pictures. My engine will be out until I get the body work and paint done. Let me know. Thanks, John
  10. Ron, Thanks for the great info. I have been through the datsun.org website and actually first found the info about F.A.R on that site. I am interested in the racing history and appreciate your help although I probably won't bother Les until I need new seat covers (if he still has some) Thanks again.
  11. Yes John, Do you have any pictures of the one's you might have for sale? I would definately get it recored.
  12. That's the place. I must have 40 invoices from there dating from 1989 back to 1973. They weren't cheap either. The last rebuild invoice I found was from 1988 and it was for $2800.00 and did not include a new clutch. On the estimate it said "Engine is tired". I think we all have been there. Well, thanks for the input.
  13. Is there any one thing that identifies a radiator as original? I am wondering if mine was just recored by the po vs. being replaced. Thanks
  14. Thanks for the info. I am not looking for aftermarket and from what I can tell without calling the guy these are definitely aftermarket. I am looking for a serviceable series 1 radiator if you know of anybody;)
  15. Found a company selling this radiator: Radiator, 70-73 240Z Auto 3 Row DPI (110) Is this correct for an early series 1? Were they 2 row or 3? Thanks
  16. Galaxy, Thanks for the info. I read about Walt Maas on the datsun.org site. Seems he was a pretty good driver. How would I be able to tell if the distributor has been worked on? The current plug wires are shot (at least 20 years old) and I guess I would need to open the carb up or dig through invoices for part numbers to see if I have the SM needles. As far as the cam goes, I will have the Valve Cover off today and will see what the part number is. I have the engine out of the car right now as I am restoring it. The previous owner also put 6-2-1 headers on. I think I will blast and paint these but keep the old manifold handy if I ever decide to show the car. I kind of gathered that. The PO was a fanatic about this car. From all the invoices I have going back to the day he purchased it he only had the Datsun dealership (Dragonetti Motors) service it during the warranty period, after that it was all F.A.R. performance. They rebuilt the engine twice, bored it over on the second overhaul .030, always used oem parts where available and ALWAYS recommended on the invoice what was coming due for maintenance and what would improve performance. As I shuffle through the 30 or 40 FAR invoices it seems the PO took their advice almost every time and had the recommended work done at first chance. (Good for me!) I will post back about the cam and anything else I find as I do my homework. Thanks again! John
  17. I just picked up a copy of the book. Thanks for the tip Geezer.
  18. In the scan of the graph I see "FAR tune up kit installed" I wonder if I have that and dont even know it. I wonder what it consisted of?
  19. Thanks Ron. I haven't puchased that book but may have to search amazon for it now. Yes, the connection, albeit distant, is interesting. Thanks again.
  20. I just found out they closed shop about 6 years ago. If anybody knows anything else please let me know.
  21. Can anybody give me some insight on F.A.R Performance. I started googling this shop because the PO had religiously brought it there for service and rebuilding. Turns out they had a few team members that were known in the Datsun racing circuit that, from what I can tell, raced on the BRE team. Here is a link to a page I found. It talks about Kirk Allegro, (same last name as me!)a parts man and mechanic on Pete Brock's BRE Team since 1970, Dan Parkinson and many others. http://www.datsun.org/fairlady/701FAR.htm I tried the number (650/968-2911) for FAR in mountain view but I only got a non-english speaking lady after about 12 rings. I am just curious if they would have records of who worked on the car, what I might be missing in the history and such. I have to tell you, when I first got the car running and took it for a spin it seemed to have a little more response than I had remembered from my first Z, although that may be because I am driving an F-150 for my daily driver right now. If you can get me a working number or know if they just closed up shop or what I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
  22. I sent the seller a few questions. Let's see how he responds.
  23. ! Yes, I had your car fresh in my mind. When I bought my first 240 in 1981 I was living in Boca. It was a 71 also. So when I saw you were from Lake Worth I had an instant connection and wanted to see what 40 year old Florida cars look like. My first z was totaled on Military Trail and Palmetto Park road in 1982, right after a rebuild. Fortunately I walked away but my z died that day. Drunk guy turned left right in front of me. Edit: How's the car coming????
  24. I'm looking at Westpak's gallery of his one owner series 1 with D caps and it definately has the valve stem above an opening. http://www.sfzcc.com/gus/240Z/HLS3022555day1d.JPG Vin# 02/71 HLS30-22555 So I would not call this one early. Would you?
  25. Damn straight!!!
