Whats under the seat?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a '71 Z which I bought early this year and as I was cleaning up the interior I noticed there are no carpets under the seats. Is my car missing some carpeting or is some other material supposed to be there like an undercoating or sound deadening material?

Thanks

you should have sound deadening material and carpeting under there, it starts from behind the seat, is there any carpet behind the seat?

Under the seats all I see is some broken up sound deadening material, but no rust!! what should I replace it with? And I also notice in carpet kit ads that there doesnt seem to be separate pieces that go under the seats, I do have carpet behind the seats but not directly under them.

Thanks

the carpet on the floor right behind the seats should extend to underneath the seats. its shaped to the floor of the car. it might be hard to find new carpet mats to fit.

the carpet behind the seats has never 'extended' under the seats on 240s. there should be some of that jute material under there but stock, no there never was anything.

thats strange becouse mine does, its all 1 piece from the behind the seat all the way to behind the front seat mount.

while its possible longer pieces of carpet have been added in my car i doubt it becouse all the original carpeting on the rest of the floors seems original and the original quilting is in place,

what do you other guys have?

Carpet in front of the seat, carpet behind the seat, no carpet under the seat... just that horsehair wazzimicallit stuff

The carpet extends under the seat. There is the "horse hair" insullation pad that is the same size and shape that is under it. They look like fat "T" shapes, with a notch cut for the rear fender well.

Excuse me I'm wrong. The carpet extends to the seat's rear mount "bar". There is no carpet "under" the seat, only the horse hair insulation.

As you recognize there is great opportunity to insulate the early Z for sound and temperature. This effort adds weight that later models gained as the car transformed towards the GT and away from sport. Life is a series of decisions about tradeoffs. Quieter or heaver, or a little of each.
