While I am a fan of keeping my car stock, I wanted to touch on the subject of the air intake box on the stock 280z.

Does the stock setup restrict air flow versus using one of the K&N canister type air intake tip filters?

I currently use the K&N filter for stock air intake box. Would this be about the same (intake wise)?

I used a plate shaped like the outline of the stock filter to replace the outer cover of the stock air box on one of my old 73's. It opens things up, and keeps the stock air horns. Other than the sound I don't think it really made any difference though.

I made this a couple of years ago out of aluminum tubing and a K&N cone. I decided to make my own because the commercially available ones don't come far enough over and basically end up with the filter behind the left turn signal and I wanted it in the center. Does it out perform a stock system with a K&N drop in? Not really sure. Perhaps psychologically because you can hear it but I'm not certain I can really feel any difference.
