i've just recently bought a 1976 280z. my question is when it is in gear the shifter rotates around as if it was in neutral, but its not and still drives like that. so i guess to form it in a question what could that be? i'm not what to even start on, being that this is the first z i've ever owned and worked on.

You need bushings. Two of #30 and one of #31 as shown in the attachment. #30 is Nissan part number 32855-H1010 and #31 is 32861-N4200.
