Rally 240z vs 1600 (510)

Apparantly I've got too much time on my hands and would like to have a go at building a rally car.

In my yard I have a straight 240z shell and a straight 1600 shell, I know the virtues of the 1600 but haven't had the 240 full squirt on the dirt (motor out).

So my question is what makes the more competitive rally car in each of their own classes.

hmmm....

both cars have had GREAT sucess in the rally world....

the 510 is probably in my opinion a better candidate because of the parts.. and the smaller engine. The 240Z had a larger engine and usually had to go into a different class but the 510 has less than a 2.0L engine so it can compete in a more generalized compact class.

Boy.. I don't know.. I have always wanted to build my 280Z up to a full blown Rally car.. but... I would say the 510.

in production classes where modifications are limited the zed is the better car and they do look so much better sideways

The 1600 are a great car for under 2ltr classes but over that the zed is better now as you cant modify the 1600 like you could before in the group g days

Remeber when they brought group a rally cars in every one was changing to zeds said it was just like driving a 1600 only sitting in the back seat

Need to check what rallys run in your area to find out which class you would have competition to me if you have a straight zed dont put it near gravel The reason i rally my rx4 is there cheap to relpace gravel and rallying are very hard on the car and parts just like sandblasting with rocks

Would hate the repair bill while learning to rally in a zed imagine afew bonnets and front guards

In 4 years rallying the rx4 and not that many events my two different navigators have had drives and written car off currently on third shell have used up at least 2 front guards myself

and spoiler all fun but at least the rx4 shells we get for $50

Would think the 1600 would be my choice if i was starting out again or maybe buy a car already decked out maybe a later f2 under 1600 style car probaly cheaper than building a new car from scratch

Mick's quite right in what he say's, however, Rally is such a generalised term that you would really need to define exactly what you intend to do.

Not sure of the competition in Qld, but down here you can have anything from full on ARC which the Classic Class to us old farts in HRA Historic Trials.

Then you need to consider Tarmac [TRE] events. If you are doing a full on resto, then dirt may not be what you had in mind?

I've rallied the zed in Historics, Robson Cup and Tarmac events, prefering Navigational style events rather than route charted one, I've come off the road a few times, but never sustained major damage. Mind you I'm not a fast driver either, just glad not to DNF.

The zed with it's longer wheel base it doesn't bounce around like a 1600, so it's my pick rather than a 1600, but hey, I certainly wouldn't say no to a 1600 either! Be careful with any modifications you might want to do as you could quite easily have a trip to the Stewards. Have a read thru the CAMS Manual and also size up the local competition.

On the whole turning up with a well presented Zed will always turn eyes. Good Luck and keep us posted.

if your talking sealed road rallies targa adeliade classic rally tas id go with the zed i much prefer to run mine on sealed roads any will always grab the zed if its sealed and i can run it some events just dont like a v8 in zed

So what size motor is allowed in historics and something like the Robson cup, I saw Mike Reeves son in a 240z with a FI L28 at a autocross and he was only 3 sec off the 4wd buggies, this is whats got me thinking a change to Zed

For a start a FI 240 isn't allowed.

It would only be allowed as a model run on as a 280Z.

There is one only logbooked [PRC] that I'm aware of, there may well be others but not log booked. Our ex-president [hrA] had one and boy did he drive it fast, always at the pointy end of the field. As an aside he has always regretted selling it and has oftened mused about buying it back!

Anyway,

Basically, it's as stock as you can get [hrA or HRC, take your pick].

Headers or manifold aren't free, so forget about webers. You get a better deal with suspension as the zed was pretty advanced to the 1600. 1600 Tie rods had [have] a habit of snapping. You could change these to ones off a Torana [might be a Gemini], but last time someone did this, it was protested and a trip to the Stewards was costly. This is one reason why you see very few HRA members competing in the VRC!

Brakes is another one, forget about those rear discs & fender flares, although I think you may be able to do the flares in Classic Class. The moral to the story is keep it basic and you can enter every event. Start Modifiying it and your filed is narrowed.

Locked diff is OK, but not advisable. Ever tried to turn inside a goat track!

Route charted events would be better suited to locked diff.

There are many factors here, event style and class will in-evitably determine what you will and won't do rather than can't do.

In all honesty, while this board is great for sounding out ideas, every state has different views. Victoria is probably in the worst position, simply because we have the National office here and any events are subject to intense scrutiny.

If you can, join a Rally orientated club as the input you require won't come from a specialist car club. Been there, can't help or not interested in helping.

Having said that don't let me deter you from posting more questions as we can only assist.
