Z starting problems

Hey hows it going. I had my z running great yester day. Then it wouldnt start. All i get is a click from the relay under the right side of my dash. I figured my terminals just needed cleaning so i did that. Cleaned both terminals and were the wires hook up to the terminals and the wires themselves. Problem solved. Z started right up. So i turned her off and started her a couple times and all was good. I was thinking this was too good to be true so i tried a third time. Same old click. I let her sit over night and tried her this morning. same thing. My battery isnt the best so i thought it might be that. But after trying to give it a jump i can tell it isnt the case. The last time i tried to start it it started to turn the motor then stopped and clicked. Should i check all the connections at my starter and use copper polish on the wires? Or should i just replace my solenoid. Can i replace the solenoid without buying a new starter? I dont know. Any advice would be appreciated... thanks

sounds like a solenoid problem. I would just replace the start all together it is only $40 at the local parts store. I would look to the solenoid/starter problem. if that doesn't work, :ermm: I don't know?

Good luck

Things I have learned about Zcars. Jumping a bad battery is the same as guessing about jumping a bad battery. Get it tested. Make sure the battery cables have clean fresh connections at EACH end and are snug.Dont let a corrioded bolt on a battery post trick you into thinking its snug. Make certain those cables are not corroided. That stuff is like a wick and it sucks thru the cable. Although I have had starter brushes go bad/wear , I have never had a bad solenoid. I always replace them as a pair. A jumper cable attached to the STARTER post of the solenoid ,then touched to the battery positive will spin the motor ample times to know if the solenoid is bad. I would replace as a pair if I could. One of the pair would be a band aid as I see it. The caution of my test method is the pos. hit on the battery=sparks As where if the connection was made on the battery first I would be afraid of that spark/arc damaging the threads on that soleniod post I wanted off. Next rule..Dont let a loose/bad belt on your alt. make you think you have a bad battery:stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

Thanks for the advice. Definetly the solenoid. I pop started her and she took right off. Im selling one of my vw engines today so i think im about to put a new in starrter today or tomorrow. Im thinking im gonna go ahead and order that carb sync tool with the money im getting. Yup. Should have her running like a champ in no time, right after i replace the clutch too. LOL. To the average guy this might be a big pain. But not too bad compared to my last car. LOL. Its so nice not to be adjusting valves every 3,000 miles...........

Ok then. Im gonna pull out my battery and take it down to the mansker tire center. Have them test it and see if its good. If it is ill go buy a new starter, if not ill buy a new battery and wait on the starter. Thanks for the help, oh by the way, the click was from the relay box not the solenoid..... while im outside im gonna use my voltage tester to make sure its getting power.

That's good. It means that your ignition relay is good and you can rule it out as part of the problem. But I think you already have since my reply was a couple of days ago.

Yep. Good relay. Bad battery. It only tested with half of the cca's it should have. Im thinking using the bad battery killed my starter solenoid. Im gonna buy an optima battery and a new starter monday. Hopefully that should bring an end to all my starting problems for a while......................
