I actually should've expected worse ya know . But I was told it was all original and it wasn't. I wanted to keep this one original or at least the entire motor original. But looks like if I want to do that I have to find a e31 head. I hear those are hard to find since they were on the 69-70 Z's And since thats what I have then it will be hard to find.

A little upset tonight. I was given this car that was supposed to be almost original. Apparently the motor may have been rebuilt at some point, or maybe just the head was. I went searching for the head casting number tonight and what I found was a e88 head, not the e31 head that I thought I had. I found the block casting and that I believe is the e31 block. Very hard to see with those damn old headers in the way so I'll have to remove those to confirm but it looks like I have the e31 head. I was curious to look this up today because I realized I think IM supposed to have a oil bar for the cam and the head doesn't have that. Did the e88 head have the oil bar? because I don't see anything that looks like a oil bar. I also took off the little sticky trim on the side of the car.....someone thought it was a cool idea to add this trim to cover up holes in the body...also saw some bondo lookin stuff. I know this car is in relatively amazing condition for its age, but the little surprises are not making it seem easier for me .

Well I took a quick video today of the car, you can see something funny I found under my dash and I zoomed in on the cam to show it up close.

Interesting, I just saw an oil bar on one motor and never really thought about that, it was on an l28 I think the guy had though....I'm going to dos compression check with a friend soon. Thatll probably say alot. The transmission however is not good for sure, I drove the car up and down the street for the last few months and it def does not go into 5th. It feels like it drops a gear when you put it in 5th. There were no bushings for the shifter but it should still go into all the gears. It says on the transmission housing "datsun 5 speed transmission 240z, l20" someone wrote that on there. I'll look into doing a valve adjustment too the same day as the compression test. Might still pull the motor so Incan replace the broken rubber on the engine mounts though.

I'll have to look up in my books on how to do a valve adjustment. A friend says just from my picture with the valve cover off he said my cam looks pretty worn down....

Ok I'll look into finding a compression tester to rent. So if the compression is fine then I don't have to do a rebuild?

I figured the motor needed a good rebuild if its a 1970 model. I don't know how to tell if its been rebuilt or not. The exahust system for sure is shot, rusted so badley and badley put on it wasn't even linked properly, and it had hole in it. How can I tell if it needs a rebuild?

Ohh I see now, good to know, I did find a japanese brand that makes the twin verticle exhaust. You have to get a custom made flange to make it fit, but it will fit to a MSA 6-1 header. Cost a lot though, I'll have to get a different cheaper system for now till I can become rich .

I have the stock manifold. I don't think this would be able to use a 4 barrel carb. I have su's on it.

How can you tell it's been rebuilt? the car doesn't run all that well. Its an e33 head. The car won't really get up to speed going down the street. Maybe around 30-40 mph. And that's into 4th gear.

Well today was the day that I started on getting my Z going better. My friend and I took out the transmission that is supposed to be a 5 speed, but seems to only be 4. took off part of the exhaust which is completely rusted and wasn't even put on right anwas leaking all over. We also took off my valve cover to see how the cam area looked. Maybe you guys can tell me how everything looks, I now it looks dirty but overall how bad? My Cam gear seems to be either chipped or crack, I took a pic and hopefully someone can tell me how bad it is. Hopefully I can get a engine crane and motor stand this week when I get paid and I finish paying some bills

My car is finally home!! It took a long long time. But we are done moving into our new house, I rented a truck and trailer and took my baby home. Now the fun can begin. I'm going to attempt a rebuild of the orignial l24. When I get some money after a long time I'll hopefully get to building a rebello stroker motor. I want to stay period correct but at the same time I want the car to be what I expect it to be. Fun, exciting, sounds amazing, and a head turner.
  17. Mine has seemed to stop and I didn't do anything, so I don't know. I'll be moving soon to a new house and I can finally garage my baby and take her apart and finally get to restoring her the right way.
  18. Well I don't want to put my hands all over a man......so....... LOL
  19. The car is located at my work in a closed parking lot. It's not leaking oil, I haven't been able to recreate the noise the last two times I started the car. Maybe it was a fluke?
  20. I actually changed the oil some weeks ago, the noise started after my car didn't start at the gas station. It hasn't come back yet after I tried running the car the other day.
  21. I just did one about 10-20 miles ago, haven't really driven it further then in the parkinglot and around the neighborhood twice.
  22. Yes it is! I'll be posting more videos soon.
  23. I went to go try it this afternoon and it wasn't making the sound now. Kind of weird, I'll post another video with me revving the motor.
  24. So I drove the car to the gas station the other day. I fill up the tank and go to start the car and she won't start, it was weird since she was fine driving around the block. Anyways after trying a few times I basically emptied one float since I had no tools and the gas station didn't have any tools as well I yanked one tube open and drained it. Tried her again and she started right up, but then started making this weird winy noise. Anyways I recorded the noise, if anyone knows what this could be please let me know.
