Tie Rod Ends - Won't come apart!
There are tools to do that job. The simplest one is a "pickle fork", which is a large, two-pronged fork tool. The fork tines are thin at the front and get progressivly thicker and thus act like little levers that slide on either side of the tie rod end and push it out as you hammer on the end of the fork. Anyone else have a better description? You can get one of these tools at most auto parts stores. There are different sizes for tie rod ends and ball joints. There are also little "press" tools that I have seen that use a sort of clamp and screw arrangement to press the end out of the knuckle, but I've never used one. Good luck.

Z Fest / Z's By The Bay
Nope. Same problem even when the address is directly entered in a new window. Do you have the photos somewhere other than the guycali site, and you're linking from this site to them? That sounds like what it is complaining about.

I get a "remote linking forbidden for free accounts, please upgrade your account" graphic in place of all your pictures. :disappoin .

Center Dash Restoration
I'd say NOTHING is necessarily obvious - even with the picture, I might have not thought about it and routed it wrong. Especially since it will be a year or more before I put it back together! Tips like this can save hard-to-find parts! Thanks!

Center dash panel
The parts fiches list 5 different panels up to '73, with a break at 7/72. Then, after 10/73, it's a whole nother fiche, and the part number is different and the drawing looks pretty different. I don't think a '76 finisher will work in a '72, although I don't really know. I'd get a picture and compare - that ought to tell you.

Mystery Switch
Interesting. My dash has both holes cut out at the hazard switch - the bottom one has the hazard switch in it, and the top one is empty. So, how about other early owners chiming in - do you have a radio like mine with the antenna rocker, or do you have a toggle? Was a cassette AM/FM unit available in '70, or could it have been a later addition? Mine is AM only. Does your radio have a rocker like mine? My car seems to have very few options (no rear defogger, etc. ), so maybe AM only was different than a more loaded version. Picture of my hazard switch area attached. I have been worried that the PO had replaced the dash with a later version that had that upper hole cut out for the cig lighter, but he said he didn't...

Luggage wall Finisher
Anyone have a spare finish piece for the top of the wall behind the seats for an early 240Z? It'd be 74965-E4100 "Molding - Luggage stopper" - the straight piece of molding behind the seats on top of the wall. I don't know whether the form of this piece changed over the 240Z years, but the first part number change was at 8/71. Thanks.

Center Dash Restoration
I snapped one other pic tonight while taking my dash pad off the frame. This is the back of the heater control panel, where you can see the four control wires connected to the switch assembly on the heater control panel.

Center Dash Restoration
So far I've got about 600 pics, and some day I'll have a chance to go through them and upload to the gallery. Right now, I'm limited to grabbing the ones that are useful at the time. They are all high res 4 Megapixel images, so I have to downsize each one to upload it . Not hard one at a time, but a lot of work for 600 and counting :classic: .

Center Dash Restoration
Here's a pic of one of the cable connections on the left side of the heater box. Note the cable clamp and then the connection of the wire at the valve.

Center Dash Restoration
There are 4 steel cables running from the heater control levers to the various vent flaps and heater valves. You have to get under the dash and disconnect them at the flaps/valves on both the left and right side of the heater box. On the left side are a couple flap connections, and on the right is (I think) one flap connection and one valve connection. If I remember, the valve connection needed an offset screwdriver to turn the clamp screw to release that cable. Each cable connection has a clamp holding the vinyl sleeve, and then a screw/clamp connecting the wire to the flap or valve lever. You have to disconnect both on each cable. Then the heater control panel will be able to be moved out of the dash, although there are several other electrical connections that will need to be removed as well. Good luck. I can probably come up with some pictures if you need them.

What's your favorite part of the site?
I second (or third?) that. I thought I knew a lot about Z cars from my younger days with them, but you guys humble me with your experience and willingness to help. I use the recent postings at the bottom of the home page most of the time to keep up with conversations. Thanks!

What does this lever do?
I think I'm finally getting the idea. In the attached picture, you can see that bracket that I asked about in the last picture, as it lines up with the little bracket on the top of the accerator that I now know is for the cable end. I gather that the cable goes through the pinch bracket, through the little plastic grommet on the top of the accelerator, and there's a lead ball on the end of the wire to keep it from coming back through. Thus, if you pull on the throttle, it pulls the top of the accelerator forward, which is like pushing on the pedal. If the hand throttle is not pulled, then pushing on the pedal just has the top of the bracket slide along the wire. Do I have it now? Looks like all I need is a cable...

What does this lever do?
I just got a reply from the PO, and he says that, according to what he remembers, there was a bracket in the engine compartment (on the intake manifold) that the cable attached to, and that bracket is in one of the boxes of "stuff" he gave me. I'll be looking through that "stuff" when I get the chance. Anybody out there have a picture of an intact very early hand throttle connection to the accelerator, the manifold linkage, or any place else? Or, I just looked through my picture files, and is the attached picture the pinch bracket that you're talking about? Thanks!

backside of the dash
I'd be happy to do that. I haven't uploaded anything yet mostly because I have about 600+ pictures so far and I don't know what I would upload and what I wouldn't. I have to categorize them soon, since I'm starting to find it difficult to find what I want now :classic: :classic: . Anyway, if you think this kind of stuff would be useful in general, I'll do some uploading after I get back from a vacation I'm taking that starts on Thursday - no time before that to categorize much.
