  1. I just bought some new headers for my 1974 260z, but they run into some transmission coolant lines. Does anyone know if I would be able to bypass these lines? Or what I could do to get around this problem? It's an automatic and I have removed the air conditioning. Any information would be greatly appreciated. The two horizontal lines in the second picture are what I am talking about.
  2. First off, hello there, my name is Brad. I am new here... and yes this is another SHOULD I BUY THIS post so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been searching my local area and nearby states for a Z car (specifically pre 1979... no ZX). I am planning on doing a budget build and not a restoration. I will be going for the classic JDM look (fender mirrors, flairs etc.). I am a performance car enthusiast and currently daily drive a 2011 Subaru STi, however performance is not my end goal. I already have a great performance car so I want something that looks different for cruising and taking to some shows. I love the way the classic Z cars look, even stock they are gorgeous. This may upset purists but imperfections don’t bother me and this car will be far from perfect for some time. The imperfections are character and show history. That being said I don’t want a complete ROT project, as many don’t. After searching I found what I think is the best deal I’ve seen so far and plan on going to check it out today with CASH in hand but would love to hear some opinions and words of caution from those more experienced than I. Here is the ad: 1974 Datsun 260Z Turbo This car is just up the road so it’s a lucky find in my opinion. Some more information from the guy after talking with him and looking at pictures he sent me. - The floor pans are not rusted through, only surface rust. - The electrical issue is because he had someone else wire the car and they used the wrong harness. Everything works (lights, turn signals etc) just some of it is mixed up, like the wipers are turned on VIA the defrost button . So nothing major and something I will fix. - He checked the wheel wells and strut tower areas and said nothing was rusted through (I will confirm this) - The car was originally from Texas but spent 2 years in Connecticut, that’s where the little bit of rust came from. It now resides in Columbia, SC. I originally set out to find a carbureted setup to eliminate EFI and having to work with ECU/tuning. I currently do that on my STi but it can be tougher than making adjustments to a ye ol’ carb setup. However he said it runs great and has no issues so I shouldn’t have to touch the engine much at the moment. The only issue comes in when I do have to. Maybe someone can shed some light on this part, is it a good setup, easy or hard to work with and so on. I think that is the only thing holding me back at the moment (besides the obvious that I haven’t seen it in person yet). I know I’m forgetting some small details so I will update if I can think of anything. Thanks in advance!
  3. Hey everyone I have a 260z and the gas tank leaks if I fill it up past half tank. I changed the sending unit and I changed the oring and lock twice but it still leaks! I watched it leak from the unit so I know for a fact It comes from there. Also I capped off all the unnecessary vents. So my question is WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH MY TANK?? And if i do infact need a new tank where might I find one for cheap preferably used as I dont have much cash like the typical college student. anyways HELP PLEASE!
  4. I have a 74 260 z. She has had some troble with starting. I rebuilt her but the wireing is so back wards I literaly can't get it straight. It died on me on my way back from a dent. app. luckily i had a timing light in the car so i could tell the coil stoped getting power. So I ran a wire straight from the battery to the coil for about 45 miles until I found the EGR valve wire was running 6/8 volts and hooked it to the ignition coil. Having long ago removing the EGR entirely. Then a month later the starter just stops working, New starter btw, and rechecked. Tried to wire the seat belt safty togther and all I got was the relay by the fusible link next to the battery moaning like a virgin at jounior prom. I'm at the piont where i'm going to have to wing it to rewire the whole car compleatly I guess. Don't know what to do. starts up just fine when I "Bump" the starter with a screw-driver, but only with a compleat and full charge on the battery. Please any advice would help. Thank you!
  5. I am in need of a RHD latch and cable for my 74 Fairlady, does anyone here know where I might find one. I have contacted the Australia Z car club but have had no luck as of yet. Thanks, Travis
  6. I am a new member to the Classic Z Cars forum. I am the original owner of my 260Z, which was purchased from Billy Gordon Datsun in Burlington, NC, May 23, 1974. A little about my 260Z:My car has been through quite a transformation since purchasing it in 1974. MotorSport springs, Larger Sway Bars, Datsun Competition Headlight Covers, Rear Overrider Bar, Custom Interior (Velour), Mono Steering Wheel, Alpine CD Deck/Custom Speakers/500 Watt Amp, Wink Mirrors/Racing Mirrors. This is just a start...
  7. A few nights ago I was driving my 1974 260Z home and my lights started to dim, windshield wipers started to slow, and my engine began to choke. At first I thought it was just my battery. So I had my battery jumped and it wouldn't hold a charge. I automatically assumed it was my alternator after checking all my fuses. I replaced the alternator and charged my battery. I was able to drive it for about 45mins. I went home, woke up the next morning, checked the belts and such, and drove it around the block to make sure all was going smoothly. It seemed okay. Once I turned the car off and went back to start it up again it wouldn't start. Any help or advice anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated. If there is any information I left out please let me know! Thanks in advance! -Joseph
  8. My first Datsun and it's a 1974 260Z. I'm already in love. Lookin' forward to seeing everyone's Datsuns. I'm in the Central Orange County area (Santa Ana). Hit me up if there are any Datsun events. -Joseph

  10. As I was 6 months into my waiting list for my '73 Z, I drove by another local dealer and saw the most beautiful Z I'd ever seen. Sterling Silver early 260Z and still on the car carrier. I made a barely legal u-turn and inquired about its status. Extra shipment, all mine 2 hours later. Well as far as love at first site, we were still in the afterglow 13 years later when I had to sell it for parts. Dang midwest winters ate up the body as was so common to a daily driver. 97.000 miles and the engine was super strong and tight still. That's why it hurt so much to part with it. With the proceeds of the sale, bought an '87 200SX and kept it for 18 years. It too was mechanically sound, and the body showed no rust. Victim of a crack-head rear ending it outside my home one night in 2005. Of course he was driving a 75 Buick Riviera, a tank. So much for my sports car stage. Went out and bought a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 to surround myself in metal. With my old Z a distant memory, in Dec of 2005 my son saw an add on Carsoup.com for a late '74. Back in the saddle again! Had it in the shop for it's first six months getting a 5 speed put in to replace the automatic. Replaced the flat tops with Webers and new brakes all around. The body was in great shape with small areas of pop-corn rust. After the mechanical work, we had the body work done, a new dogleg for the passenger side and repainted the original 305 Blue. Replaced the dented hood with and original Nissan from Japan. Since it's been out of the shop, my son and I have taken it back to as original as possible, many small replacements. The original AM-FM radio was found and reinstalled with the electronic antennae. My next project was reconditioning for old 5 slot Shelby Cal 500 mags for it. New bumpers and rubber trim all around. It is a beauty, even with the BigBumpers which still detract from the lines, but wanted to go as original as possible. Might consider putting round tops back on it in the future. Although it runs like a top, one problem developed. It has a hairline crack in the block which leaks a small amount of coolant. I know that it won't get better on own. I've tried all the block sealants, ceramic and such, but looks like I'll have to replace it someday. Thanks for looking! Mike
