  1. Hello, kind folks of CZC, long time lurker here! Normally I can figure out my issues through the vast information already here but this is the first problem I came across that I feel the need to post and get some more direct answers. The car cold starts every single time and runs from anywhere to 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The RPMs bounce from around 750 to 1,000 until it puts up a fight to stay alive and then stalls out. Very occasionally white vapors will pour out the carbs trying to crank her right back up. After that I will have to wait about 5 minutes for it to crank back up. Now the problem first arose with some bucking on the highway, normally around in the 2,000 to 3,000 RPM range. Then it slowly came to the state that it is in now. Little bit about the car. 1974 260z. Stock 2.6L with Ztherapy carbs. Electric fuel pump. 77,xxx miles. Daily Driver. Owned about a year. I started the search for engine harmony in the ignition. Pulled plug wires until I came across #1 to see the tip of the plug and plug wire was rusted completely. I then replaced with NGK plugs and wires along with cap and rotor thinking that had to be the problem. Same symptoms afterwards. I then started to believe I became victim of the timing chain jump myth but after checking TDC with marks on the rotor, cam, and piston everything seemed to be in line. Timing set to 8 degrees at 750 RPM's the few times I had it running well enough to do so. Valves were adjusted tight a couple months ago. Moved on to a dry compression test and the results seemed consistent enough to rule out any issues there. 1. 160 2. 160 3. 165 4. 175 5. 170 6. 170 I then moved over to carbs and disassembled the majority of the body and cleaned out what I could do the best of my ability. I came across a crack in the top portion of one of the floats. Would that possibly cause flooding issues after a certain period of time of running and cause the white vapors from the carbs? I redone the fuel tank and cleaned out the lines when I first bought the car so I believe all is good there. Clear fuel filter installed so I do see clean amounts of fuel flow going through it. Been running the same fuel delivery setup for months. Brake master vac always had a leak in it but spraying carb cleaner around other lines had no effect on RPMs. I grew a terrible stubble of facial hair to profusely scratch while trying to think of a solution to no avail. I feel like the problem is so minuscule and I may feel like a dummy afterwards but better a dummy that has a running car than none. I'm losing days at work, patience, and money at parts to trying to get it going again. Sorry for all the reading material. Any input appreciated guys!
  2. Make plans to polish up that Z car and join the SunCentral Z Club (formerly Suncoast Z Club and Central Florida Z Club) for their annual Z-Fest, a celebration of the Z car! It will be held at Wooten Park in Tavares, Florida. Music, food, and sweet Z's! On Saturday, there will be car show with a People's Choice award given in each body style class. On Sunday, there will be an Autocross event that should be a ton of fun! Pre-registration is highly encouraged due to space limitations. Registration info will follow soon or you can check for updates at our website at or email Jay at
  3. Not only is this my first post in this forum, this is will also my first Datsun, and also my first car! It has a well documented 83k, starts right up, drives great, and has rust on the passenger side wheel arch and a bit on the driver door sill. It hasnt been driven much in the past few years and I would like to get it up to daily driver status. Ill have to travel at least 15 miles a day or 28 miles at most (round trip). What should I be checking/replacing to ensure reliability and healthy driving? Are there specific parts that commonly fail on these cars, or should I just bring it to Meineke to have it inspected? Cant wait to pick it up tomorrow!
  4. I hate to ask this question since its been asked so many times before, but I tried the other solutions and they did not work. When I bought the car, both the low and high beams worked fine. The day I got it home, the left headlight had gone out and a few days later the right headlight followed. The amp meter needle bounces when I switch on the low beams (parking lights) but no longer does anything between the low and high beam settings. Literally every other light in the car works except for the headlights. I did some searching and other people who had the same problem as me either found a broken connection under the steering wheel or had a bad switch, so I cleaned the switch, checked all the connections under the steering column and I couldnt spot any problems. This connector was too hot to handle after I tested all the lights and left the lights on the high beam setting for a while(pulled it apart as much as my fingers could handle before taking the picture: According to the FSM it connects a ton of stuff, but after pulling it apart, I did not notice anything odd with the individual connections and everything looked very clean. After putting everything back together, the plug no longer heats up, but still no headlights. Did my headlights just die out? Is there something I overlooked? Here is the album that has all the pictures of my car and the pictures from around the steering column: I purchased these lights from eBay to replace the old ones, but I would like to see if I can solve the headlight problem before putting in higher power lights and a headlight relay harness. Any idea how I would get the halos to work? The knowledge of electronics I had does not translate to inside the car like I thought it would
  5. Hey everyone I have a 260z and the gas tank leaks if I fill it up past half tank. I changed the sending unit and I changed the oring and lock twice but it still leaks! I watched it leak from the unit so I know for a fact It comes from there. Also I capped off all the unnecessary vents. So my question is WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH MY TANK?? And if i do infact need a new tank where might I find one for cheap preferably used as I dont have much cash like the typical college student. anyways HELP PLEASE!
  6. I need some suggestions of what to try next on my 74 260Z that starts fine but has little to NO power on the road. I have working on fixing the issue for 10 solid days and have ran out of ideas. Quick history - I finished restoring and finally started the car on Dec 14. The first drive was 12/23/11 and she did great. Drove her almost 400 miles over a few days without incident. Plenty of power and fun as hell to drive. Only twice in the first week did she kinda studder on take-off. Didn't think much of it until on New Year's day she almost stranded us 30 miles from home. Started making a different engine sound (a "bauhhhh" ipo a "brrrhhh") and sputtering real bad. Gimped home at 40mph and much slower going up hills but made it home. After 10 days of trying any and everything I think it could be, exactly same as it was. I need some new suggestions. She starts fine. Idles OK even though the RPM's fluctuate some. Just zero power. Here's what I've tried: Fuel: 1. New filter near mech FP, new filter near elec FP, neither were real dirty but replaced anyway. 2. Confirmed power to elec FP while running w/ test light wired into trunk, getting 12V. 3. Re-tore carbs apart. Yes they are flat-tops. Front carb bowl was kinda dirty with rust-colored debris. Rear was clean. Rechecked float heights and installed new diaphragms/gaskets on both power valves. I had put a new kit (needle/seat and other gaskets during restoration but failed to do power valves. 4. Removed fuel lines and blew them out. Checked with empty Mason jar that I'm getting plenty of gas when starting and running. I haven't hooked up a pressure gauge in-line yet as some have suggested. 5. Removed and cleaned all spark plugs. Front 3 were dirty and appeared to be wet or fuel fouled. Ran same after reinstallation of clean plugs. 6. Checked both sides of exhaust manifold after running awhile (ouch) and both sides were hot. 7 Disconnect charcoal cannister and cracked fuel cap for venting. Ran the exact same. 8. Ran with mech FP removed from series but ran about the same. Began thinking electrical at this point. Electrical: 1. Coil is a Crane PS20 and is seeing 12V while running. Replaced with the old coil and ran the same way. 2. I am going to check the air gaps in the dizzy today and run a test on vacuum advance that many posts mention but was hoping someone else had other ideas. Before we start a whole series of "boat-anchor" discussion about the flat-tops, I personally think its something else. She ran great for 400 miles first and the weather here is cool and not causing vapor-locking. I do not run coolant to the flat-tops per suggestions that overheating can occur. Anticipated thanks.
  7. I have a 1976 280z that we need a rear glass for and a local guy claims to have one. It looks right, but can someone tell me what years and models are interchangeable and if the coupe and 2+2 models take the same rear glass? thanks for the help.
  8. Rather than let these threads go on forever as they do in some other forums, I thought I'd start new ones for separate generations for the New Year. Use these threads for short, Twitter-like posts, things that may not be worth their own thread. This one is for the S30s. Enjoy, and let's keep each other involved!
  9. Hi I have a late model 260z. I want to put a 240z grill on it-what do I need to make this happen. Does it bolt right up or does it need modifacations, if so what mods. Thanks zdude1967
  10. Hi Can both front and rear 240z bumpers be installed on a 260z. If so what is the process, are any customs brackets needed. Thanks zdude67
  11. hey all, here's my situation. I found this fairlady z close to home and I'm wondering more about it. first off, is a 1975 fairlady z similar to the 260z? is that correct? what kind of differences am i looking at? weight reduction, stiffness, power, engine? and i guess mainly i am curious to what kind of 'trouble' ill be getting into if i bought one. I'm not the most mechanically adept guy and i'm not wealthy by any means... but i absolutely love the looks of the z... do these cars cost quite a bit on parts? are they hard to find? I was seriously considering getting a 240sx from the states, but what i find is that what I really want to do is invest time and money into something I love. not so much as a practical car, but as a hobby. here's the link to the car i'm looking at. thank you so much for helping!
  12. I have a 1974 260z with a 2.6L and the harmonic balancer has 2 pulleys and the inner pulley has separated. I was wonder if anyone would know what different years of balancer/pulley would fit the 74 motor. Im just now starting to search for parts. Thank you.
  13. New to this web site - looking for a Z Car specialist who can service a 260Z in Massachsettes (preferably) or NH area. Engine re-build possible in the future. Thnaks !
  14. I am a new member to the Classic Z Cars forum. I am the original owner of my 260Z, which was purchased from Billy Gordon Datsun in Burlington, NC, May 23, 1974. A little about my 260Z:My car has been through quite a transformation since purchasing it in 1974. MotorSport springs, Larger Sway Bars, Datsun Competition Headlight Covers, Rear Overrider Bar, Custom Interior (Velour), Mono Steering Wheel, Alpine CD Deck/Custom Speakers/500 Watt Amp, Wink Mirrors/Racing Mirrors. This is just a start...
  15. Just picked up a 1974 260 with an L24 engine, eventually I plan on rebuilding the car frame up and swapping out the L24 for an L28 turbo, but would at least like to have some fun with it till I get the money and a place to do the rebuild. Unfortunately the L24 with dual weber 32/30 carbs seems to be lacking in power. I know that it at least needs a valve adjustment( a bit of annoying tapping). But other than that it runs great the carbs seem to be fine. When i rev it up it sounds awesome and doesn't flutter has consistent pull all the way through the power band. But just lacks in power all together. My brother has a 4 banger prelude rated at 161 hp and it feels 10x more powerful. In fact, im pretty sure my POS old F150 with the original 4.9iL 6 could beat my Z off the line .....sad. Is this what I should expect? Would timing the valves improve horse power that much? Should i learn how to tune up the carbs? Where should i start? Any help/suggestions much appreciated.
  16. A few nights ago I was driving my 1974 260Z home and my lights started to dim, windshield wipers started to slow, and my engine began to choke. At first I thought it was just my battery. So I had my battery jumped and it wouldn't hold a charge. I automatically assumed it was my alternator after checking all my fuses. I replaced the alternator and charged my battery. I was able to drive it for about 45mins. I went home, woke up the next morning, checked the belts and such, and drove it around the block to make sure all was going smoothly. It seemed okay. Once I turned the car off and went back to start it up again it wouldn't start. Any help or advice anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated. If there is any information I left out please let me know! Thanks in advance! -Joseph
  17. My first Datsun and it's a 1974 260Z. I'm already in love. Lookin' forward to seeing everyone's Datsuns. I'm in the Central Orange County area (Santa Ana). Hit me up if there are any Datsun events. -Joseph
  18. I just picked up a very clean 1/74 260Z and it has a white or off white interior. I am looking specifically for nice door panels but would consider almost any interior trim pieces. Please email me what you have and what you would like to get from them. Chris thanks
  19. A long time ago I spotted a sexy beast of a car across the road from my apartment. Turned out it was a z... from that moment on I was sold. I used to be a '69 Mach 1 Mustang girl, but now I don't think I will ever find a car I like more than the old z's. I have just purchased dream car - she's gorgeous. 1975 260z in electric blue. The only thing is, now that I have her I am paranoid about losing her. She's been in my ownership for one day, but I keep reading on these forums about people losing their cars to rust. I am sure my old girl must have a fair bit. Would love any advice on preventing it. When I make loads of $$ would love to do a rotisserie as I have seen car owners on here do, but at the moment, well, money doesn't grow on trees! Also, I don't have anywhere to dry store her, so off to buy a cover. Hopefully that will suffice. Can't believe I'm thinking I should move out the house I adore so she can have a garage. *Pathetic. The object of my desire...
  20. Recently got a 74 260z from a neighbor. Needs a little work but thats alright.

  23. so im 15 and i recently purchased an automatic 74 260z that sat in a field for a few years. she runs now but needs work. if u can tell me where i can find some good places to find parts it would be much appreciated. so far i have -Ripped out interior panels, seats, and center console for cleaning and repair. -Replaced all fluids in the vehicle -Replaced oil filter, fuel filters, and mechanical fuel pump -And i am currently sanding and doing bondo for paint. she does have rust holes. the rubbers the go between the body and the bumpers turn to dust when i squeeze them in between my finger tips. the front left running light is broken but when i plug a new bulb in it still works. the dash has severe cracks. i need replacements. fans, tachometer, clock, and horn dont work.
