'83 280zx turbo help
The turbo needing a rebuild won't stop the car from running, and the easiest way to check it is: A)look for oil in the exhaust pipe while running before everything gets hot. Enough play in the shaft bushings usually will mean oil in the exhaust. I would be more worried about a blocked oil line. Will

'83 280zx turbo help
I would get a walmart or economy bsttery to start with and use the leftover moeny to buy a good battery charger-you will have it forever. Get a high end battery after the car is done and pretty- if you get overspray on a cheepy it is not important enough to even clean, and if the project takes longer than you think, you don't have an expensive battery sitting going bad. '83 280zx turbo help
Not much different from the scheduled maintenance on any car. Don't make it more difficult than it has to be. I would probably try to start the car on propane(just run the burner end of a grill hose into the air filter housing) because the injectors are probably stuck from the gas thickening up through time. It will run on propane (if it stumbles, turn up the gas) as long as the ignition system is working and the ecm tells it to. But...The digital engine management in '83 was problematic-I would suspect the ecm, but try to fire it up. I'll see if I can't round up some of the '83 troubleshooting info and either post, email/snail mail it to you. Will

Warning dumb question ahead....
Please! I agree that Prince took advantage of what was being done and not necessarily what was dropped in their lap. I also agree that together the Prince and Nissan made a better entity than the individual pieces-the amalgamation of the two cultures really worked well together! Prince did "work" for more of what they used than most Japanese companies-which made them less profittable-they were more interested in doing it better than getting it done, more work takes longer and costs more. Nissan was more interested in getting it done than doing it better-together the two cultures established a balance in the organization that neither had alone. One other thing to realize-Virtually all Japanese engineers working in the automotive industry after the war had worked in Military vehicle (Be it wheeled, tracked, or winged) because the entire automotive industry (as with the vast majority of the manufacturing consergns) was put into military production. Demming did a wonderful thing for the Japanese paid for by the USA, and they repaid the USA with the famed "japanese inspection", and him with the establishment of the prize-another thread... PS, Don't forget prior to the war Honda made only bicycles-maybe that has something to do with why their engines run backwards... Will

I was just there in may, he had about 50 Zs-the lot would not hold 300! of those there were only 11 S30s (all rusty) composed of 4 240Zs, and I got the best of what was there-except for one complete 240Z Needed floors and rails-but was complete)that was to be sold whole.. He is a good guy-and a wheeler dealer! He says he has 240 parts put up, but can't find them-he was supposed to call me if he did. Will

Warning dumb question ahead....
The one problem with that logic is that the first monocoque airframe was produced in Russia in 1913. and "The first automotive application of the monocoque technique was 1923's Lancia Lambda. Chrysler and Citroën built the first mass-produced monocoque vehicles, both in 1934, with the innovative Chrysler Airflow and the Traction Avant, respectively. The popular Volkswagen Beetle also used a semi-monocoque body (its frame required the body for support) in 1938. " The Japanese (not necessarily just those that worked at Prince)were notorious for copying and adapting British, American, and German technology. Many if not all of the vehicles left after WW2 were copied to the point that the engine of the First Nissan Patrol was completely parts interchangeable with a 1937 chevy engine. Prince engineers brought technology that was available to all of Japan to the Z, just as the Nissan Engineers did. Will

Hi Folks, I'll start my first post with a poll!
The closest to a 240Z with creature comforts would be a 280ZX. They are a fun car, not as precise or responsive as a 240Z, but still fun. See if there are members near you and trade a cold drink for a test drive! Will

1) drain and change gas(all fluids would be a good idea as well) warning old gas stinks and if you get it on you or anything you care about-you will be smelling it a while! 2) check\clean\change the plugs put in NGK BPR6ES-II s-don't put any other kind in there-don't let the parts guys tempt you with splitfires, platinum, or anything else-just buy and install NGK BPR6ES-II s. 3) replace the battery and turn her over. Firewall heater grommet
Ian, You are after what I thought you were after. I believe the grommit must be a part of the assembly, or as you suggest it is simply a forgotten part. I do have a couple of uesd ones-you are welcome to one-I only pull what is in great shape(though it may need cleaning). I will look for it tonight, and post a pic when I find the rascal! Will

ZX Microfiche or parts book needed
There is a "Nissan Fast" cd. It is actually the parts program used by Nissan Dealers to look up parts-It covers the ZX and newer Nissan cars completely, and even better, knows exactly what came on every specific car, indexed by vin. Unfortunately for most of us here, that level of specification in a parts reference is not available for the S30. You might luck out in a trip to the dealer, and score the previous copy-Nissan replaces them for the dealers regularly-PM me for details. Will

S30 Chrome ashtray Restoration Techniques? Anyone? Anyone?
Enrique, The plater has tried just adding chrome, stripping the piece down to bare steel then tripple chrome, and what it looks like to him is the copper plate was taped and media blasted before the chrome was applied-that is to say the texture is in the copper, and not the steel below it. The problematic part of the entire thing is the process is being done to remove the scratches in the chrome which are as deep as the texture, so any coating obscures the texture. Will

Here are two pictures of three covers: the first in as pulled condition, the second chrome plated, and the last in the process of having the chrome stripped. Will

Window ss trim squeegy
I did a set ten years ago, and used a weatherstrip from JCwhitney. I held it to the trim piece by imitating the way hog rings are used in upholsery. I used the two stainless steel strips used to make a windshield wiper retainer(the part that slides in the guides on the wiper arm), and strung stainless nut retaining wire through the original staple holes in the trim and around the wiper retainer piece. It was still holding strong when I sold the car last year. The weatherstrip sealed well, but was different from stock in its profile-it did seem to be a more stable material than the rubber used in the original piece. Will I just read this, and found it confusing, I will try to round up the materials if it is of any interest and show what I tried to say-no sleep last night, and horrible ISP problems-I do appologize.

Victor, your car doesn't want you smoking:smoke:! Since you haven't listened to the surgeon General, the California mandated warnings and bans, your friends, your family, your co-workers, it figured distroying your fav. ashtray might get the point across by not giving you a place to store your equipment...:stupid: You know these cars don't cut anybody any slack for something they don't like-it could have been worse-it could have been your wifes new hairdooROFL ! S30 Chrome ashtray Restoration Techniques? Anyone? Anyone?
That looks pretty much like the re-chrome looks-I thought it had been powdercoated when I picked it up-but no, they showed me progressive pictures of the process. Will There is one more MAJOR difference-a plastic is much easier to reproduce than a steel piece with overly special finish...I am working on a reproductions of variety of series one ash trays-but I don't think I can afford to create one for the '72-'73 version!. Will PS, I'll post a pic of an original and the rechrome after lunch

S30 Chrome ashtray Restoration Techniques? Anyone? Anyone?
Ok, after a particularly exhaustive search of the archives, a trip back through Mr. Humbles book, a lenthy google search, and several attempts of my own. Has anyone been successful at restoring the finish on the later 240z Chrome ashtray cover? (removing the scratches and wear on the chrome) I have tried: 1)Metal Polish-probably the most successful non-altering precedure-does nothing to the scratches, but does brighten the plating. 2)Chrome plating-new chrome stays dull, but fills in the embossed texture on the cover-thus altering its appearance in both texture and reflectivity and brightness. It does look good, but does not match any other finish in or on the car. 3) Media blatsing with: Plastic media-no significant change. Sand-YUCK what a mess 4) Stripping the chrome and then nickel plating. 5) painting with copychrome(works fairly well, but does change the texture as it hides the scratches) 6) Stripped, plated with copper, sanded/polished until smooth, taped up, sand blasted, and rechromed-gets really close, but evidently a different media was used. Still not close enough to pass side by side. Anybody got one that works? Will

Firewall heater grommet
I believe this is the part number-though it is actually listed for the airconditioner grommit (Dash Fix) 27681-E0100 (80 0r 81 in the first pic) if not it must be part of this assy. assy-connector water 27190-n3100 which is the heater firewall passthrough. (14 in the second pic.) Will I haven't yet dug deep enough to find my spare for a pic of it Will
