Styling.....Porsche Cayman, 350Z & the 240Z...your thoughts?
Carl, I agree with you, Nissan may have had a bold design and grand scheeme for the 350, but Carlos pulled in the reigns. The 240z was a gamble that paid off BIG! Carlos will never benefit or lose from a gamble. It is the complete lack of "under promise and over deliver" (the ads over promised an early Z relationship and delivered nothing) , and "I would rather you beg for forgiveness than ask for permission" that is pervading Nissan now. The Demming outlook is gone, now you have people working at jobs, not careers. LEB, I understand what you mean about making design history fit the "facts", the real question is whose version of the facts are true, and how to establish truth in a situation that was taking place almost 40 years ago and more than 5,500 miles away. Heater Control Panel
I'm gonna start buying parts just to sell to those last two bidders, they obviously don't know how to shop for parts...Those can be found readily for $150-200. The '73 variety is still available from the dealer. Will

Shipping rims & tires ?
I have shipped several set of rims all over the country, most recently from Ga. to Cali, via FEDEX for no more than $38. Granted I didn't ship them with the tires... I put a 1/2" threaded rod through one of the lug holes in each wheel, put a square (larger than the rim) of 5/8" scrap plywood and a large flat washer on either end, and a similar square of 3/4" foam board insulation between the wood and each rim(5 pieces of insulation) and tightened the lock nuts, cut off the rod just outside of the nut, properly tightened, the rod is in such tension the assembledge can't come loose. I have had a problem with loosening only once-I got slack and didn't use lock nuts... The wood overhangs the rims, the foam centers and cussions the rims, and when tightened well, they simply can't be hurt from a 4' drop onto a flat surface-but it takes some tools and effort to unpack... Get your weight, size, and address info, visit Fedex.com and use Drop of at Fedex owned location(There is a Kinkos convevient to you?) and you will have the price before you ship. This is the cheepest way I have found to ship rims safely. Since you are shipping with tires on, if the sidewall is outboard of the edge of the rim, you won't need foam, and I would probably cut circles with a diameter a little larger than the high poit of the sidewall. Por 15 Help
As far as I can tell the only thing wrong with any of that was the assertion of the first sentance! I don't think anyone thinks you have no knowledge of the subject. Just in case your respponse was prompted by my post, My post was in reference to the post preceeding it: "POR is a great product but you have use their methods to apply it or it doesnt work as well as it should." Por 15 Help
Think of POR15 as a specialized tool. Using it other than as directed is much akin to using a unisyn for a hammer. It is made for a specific use, and the directions were refined through trial and error before they were packaged with it. This is not your roll of duct tape... Will

Stereo amplifier and wire choices
A couple of thoughts on oxigen free wire: 1) Oxigen isn't the problem with wire, actually it is the purity of the copperrelative to other metals(usually iron). 2)Take a VOM to a length of Walmart 16g zip cord and an equal size and length of oxigen free wire, use ohms law to illustrate the difference, and the only serious difference is the impact on the wallet! If you really want excellent wire at a low price, visit a welding supply store, they have wire with the absolute best insulation, highest strand count, greatest purity, and so flexable you can tie a tight knot in one gage wire...hard to beat-though for a 7 foot run for car speakers, I don't see it as necessary, Walmart 16g speaker wire works just as well for "a lay and leave alone" speaker instalation. Leather Covered Steering Wheel
It does look really good, but better pictures(more light and higer resolution) would show off your work better-I think the alternate color choice was a great idea! Will

How long have you had your Z?
I started my current project in April of 2004. The car is still shiney side down in the garage, but not for too much longer. I hope to start painting pieces in a month or so. Most of the parts have already been restored or replaced, so putting it all back together should not take all that long-after running a tap through all of the holes... Will

Most of that bodywork is taken from styling kits from the 80s, I think Showcarparts.com still has most of them. Will

'74 260 on ebay, You've gotta check it out!
One word comes to mind...Why? A very short and lacking ad, what look like old photographs, and no real excitement! The owner(who supplied the photos and the blurb) has no idea how to sell a $60K car. That car should have been photographed as if it were for a magazine, and the blurb should overflow with enthusiasm. I won't even comment on the car, the add stinks so badly there must be someting up... Will

Sound / insulation
I'll second what Enrique said. I will be using seven different products to take care of ambient noise in my Z. Togerther they are taking care of noise by manipulation of fundamental harmonics, reflection, conversion and absorbtion. Will

Oil cooler location???
The oil cooler can't hurt. I believe I am going to put mine in about the same location in my 240Z as it was in the ZXT-but I haven't checked the fit yet. Will

Stereo amplifier and wire choices
This is true of many amps, but you will hear the problem long before any damage is done. Also not of all amps exhibit this situation-it is completely circuit dependant. Better amps actually do not "Clip" which is the term used to describe the situation Tom brought out. The first amp that I experienced that had the non clipping circuitry was actually a home amp made by Proton, it was followed closely by their automotive version. The circuitry proved to be more expensive to produce than the company charged for and the company went out. I had that amp for years, and it was clearer than the Carver 9lb cube I had even though it was rated at only 40 watts and the Circuitry allowed it to perform like a 160 watt amp. Being in the company of Carver at that point in time was an impressive feat for an amp costing less than $300. Ed, if you were a 20something into making the chrome on your car wear holes in your paint from blasting bass, I would have directed you to something different, but in a Z unless you are willing to sacrifice some of finish of your stock interior, you simply can't get proper placement of drivers to deliver outstanding sound. I am insulating the bejesus out of my Z, using a four product approach incorporating absorbtion, conversion and reflection of sound waves. I expect to have a Z that is quieter than a new top of the line Lexus. I will be putting in a quite nice sound system after I prove my car is as devoid of roadnoise, resonances, and the like as I expect it to be. When everything is proven to work, as expected, I will be writing up an article. Will

Stereo amplifier and wire choices
It looks fine, you will not need a crossover or inductors with that amp. Be sure he sitll has the accessories(manual). Walmart sells the same amp for $142, new in the box-with free shipping to your local store if they don't have it in stock. Will

I'm new here
Welcome! One of the most memorable trips I have taken in a 240z was with myfather to my cousins wedding in Ocrakacoke, the ferry ride across was wild-the weather changed right in the middle! Just don't let her go in a Nor'easter (the Z or your wife!) WIll

Stereo amplifier and wire choices
No, the head is rated at 4 x 25 watts, that is 25 watts output per channel, making it a four channel 25 watt amp, not a 100 watt amp. You need about a 100 watt amplifier. Manufacturers quote total wattage to make it seem to have more power than it actually does. Unless you bridge the outputs(If that is possable on the amp in question), you still have a 25 watt amplifier. The ratings on the speakers are not necessary to match, they are for maximum suggested clean power. I have a set of massive set of folded horn Klipch speakers that are rated at 1000 watts each, with 100 watts I can push them to my pain threshold! I would not want to send even 300 watts through them! The point is you do not have to supply the speakers with maximum power to get great sound out of them. Will

How should I handle this?...
I suggested what I did because of two things. First, I live in an area where there is normally a minimum of 90% humidity(you can actually put a new piece of untreated metal out side and watch the rust begin.) Metal ready is an etchant, and leaves a zink phosphate coating that will protect the metal-even here! If you want to be 100%, cover the car with a well securred plastic sheet before moving it and remove the plastic sheet after the car is back in a garage. and second, the etching primer is porous, and will hold what ever the car runs into. When it is ground off all of the junk it picked up will be settle back on the car-I would rather kill everything that could hurt the car than spread it around as sanding dust... WIll

mysterious wide body kit
I did share, just didn't post it because it was so readily available. Advan racing tires. Several similar cars (though not Zs), but a racing lineage that probably includes the car in question, and does link to Japan. I said it was pertinant, not that it was the answer-but it proably will get us closer. Same racing organization in an earlier year... WIll
