Hello My name is Ken Burt and yes I have worked on Zs for a long time.
At my own shop and Datsun/nissan dealers. I currently work with Vinnie Bedini at Preformance Specialties in New Milford, CT USA.
I have owned many Zs. now I am down to 2 Zs and a 2000. I also have three rally cars: 1600sss, Gp4 Violet GTS and a GpB 240RS.
I would like to build a proper Rally Z and I would like any help in getting the right parts.
I am looking forward to getting to know many of you.
Ken
Hello Ken , I build a few 240z rally cars and we have a lot of expiriece with them , maybe i can help you with advice to use the right parts .

In South Africa , there been build localy homlogation specials from different manufacturers , for example BMW build a 7 series with a with a 24 valve 6 cil M5/6 engine , Chevrolet build on a Vauxhall Firenza a V8 302ci car called a Chevy CanAm , Alfa Romeo build a GTV 6 3.0l engine , All these cars a 100 each , where localy build as homolgation specials for South Africa , Is it possible Nissan did the same with the Skyline ?

Hi @ all,
will briefly introduce myself sometimes
my name is michael
I am from Germany Münster
In Germany there is no forum for the Z
only a Nissan board
but very few owners of a Datsun Fairlady
so I've logged on here to some interesting
to get information to me when I can perhaps help purchase
I hope this year I find a Z
in Germany there is not much choice ...
many are heavily rusted or slaughtered
Greetings
Rubber duck
P.S. sry for my bad english :stupid:
Hertslich Wilkommen , I am Adrian from the Netherands and we do 240z,s for a long time , contact me , because mayby i can help you , ( we speak verry good German too ) Freudliche Grusse Adrian .

Verry interesting hear technical things about racing Z,s there should be much more written about this .
I run a 4.40 R180 from a Subaru WRX Gr N Rally car , this is a purpose build Plate type LSD diff from Prodrive Subaru STI , we made our own output flanges for the Datsun drive shaft .
I have a 200SX gearbox with a 240Z Bellhouse , fits straith to a L6 engine , with better gearshift and close ratio 2.43-1.81-1.36-1.00-0.82 (Kameari gear kit )
My second option would be a Turbo T5 with a G-Force Close Ratio kit these have more options for 5e gear
For brakes we use the Toyota 4 pot Calipers or the much lighter AP Racing
I do not have expierece with Datsun 240Z in Endurance racing but i have with my 65 Shelby Mustang with Spa 6 Hour and Nurburgring 500 Marathon
We uses yellow Pagid but I prefere Performance Friction , they are easyer to bedding in and frienlyer for the Discs , the rear drums we use Porterfield R4 but the only the racing stuff the other stuff dont last for 6 hours.
Whats actually the minimum weight you can build a Racing Z

They grew into a forest, Kats...!
OK, this subject has been bugging me more than a little - so I started to dig a bit deeper to see if I could come up with a different part number. I felt sure that somewhere I had seen an early part number reference for the covers, but I couldn't remember just where. After what seemed like an age of fruitless searching - with paperwork and reference material spread all over the floor and shelves ( what a mess ) - I sat back down again at my desk and looked straight at the front cover of the Nissan competition prep manual for the Fairlady Z 432-R. This is one of the first places I should have looked. I'd had it on the desk for the last couple of weeks, as I had needed some data for my 432-R replica project car. I couldn't see the forest for the trees....
Turn to pages 71 & 72 and there it is, a pair of new part numbers ( well, new to this thread at least I think ) and a reference to FOUR screws on each cover. The manual is dated February 1970.
So, we now have:
63900-E4100 SET HEAD LAMP COVER RH
63901-E4100 SET HEAD LAMP COVER LH
and also:
63920-E4100 PLATE NUT ( qty. 8 )
...however, there's no firm reference to the pattern / positioning of the mounting screws in this manual. You win some, you lose some.
My 'translation' is marked in red:
Alan T.
Alan I found in my little yellowbook ( same asyou have )
A period written note with 3 ?? different part nr from the headlamp covers
63901/63900-E4100
63901/63900-E4126
63901/63900-E8725

I know that is why I ask the tires sold in the US just don't look right, I want that classic look I'll see what I can get. I'll just haft to be careful with the cops if they are not DOT rated.
Another thing I wanted to ask about is the plastic film you used to protect the car what brand and type is it? I've been having a hard time finding something like that for when I put my car back together.
in perod they used 4.75-10.00-14 Dunlop racings or 215/70-14 road/rally tyres ,
the tape ypu ask for is used on helicopter blades andprotect them for damage , I have it in my shop but i have to look for brand , i sure it comes from the states,

I hope I'm not intruding in a middle of a topic with my next question. By the way I love your cars what great detail, and passion you put into them. I hope mine will look at least half as good as yours.
My question is about the Dunlop Racing tires, I love them and would like a set for my car were they NOS? On your website, the sticker on the tire looks new, I've seen very few tires new with a sticker in as good of shape as on the tire. This made me think their might be a resource for these tires. I might be hoping too much, but it does not hurt to ask.
In Europe they are still used for classic racing , the size you probably need for a 240z is 5.50-14 , i used them on a z as well .
Btw there is not much choice for 14" .

Hi Guys:
I'm a little confused by the use of a couple terms - could be something lost in translation.
As I understand the definitions of the terms:
Chassis Number - - the serial number stamped into the body of the car, usually in sequential order that identifies that unique unit. Such as 00001, 00002, 00003......
Vehicle Identification Number {VIN} - - The series of letters and numbers that identify the completed vehicle.
Such as HLS30 00006, HLS30 00007, HLS30 00008.....
H = 2.4L engine
L = Left Hand Drive
S30 = 2 door sports coupe
00006 the chassis that car was built on.
Carnee/Carnet - - Japanese carnet registration number as Alan defined it - in effect the Japanese license plate number for identification of a specific car - which could have also had a License Plate issued by the country within which it was being operated.
So the Carnet ie the Japanese registration and the license plate could be transferred from one car to another - - and one car could have had more than one Carnet Number, depending on what Country it was registered for road use at what point in time.
However the VIN and its included Chassis Number were unique to a specific car. {Unless a car was completely rebuilt from others - and only one VIN was retained to identify it }
Adrian - - are you indicating that
1/1970 240z HLS30-1639
8/1970 240z HLS30-7996
8/1970 240z HLS30-7998
8/1970 240z HLS30-8449
Are the VIN's of the 4 LHD cars that were "Works Rally Cars" ? Or are they cars that you presently own?
From an earlier thread - #7996 was identified as TKS 33 SA 987 {71 Monte Carlo Rally}.
Thanks,
Carl B.
No Carl , carnet nr can not be transfer to other cars , its a temporary export permit , normally for a year , the canets ar specific for a car , and details as Chassis nr , type , ectr are written on the carnet ,
These carnets as I say are valid for a year , and within this year the goods on the carnet , in this case cars , have to be shipped back to where they come from , to clear the carnet .The japanese did this to avoid local taxes .
Or , if they stay in a a other country , they have to pay local taxes , as import tax , Vat , ectr. In case of the 1971 Monte cars it was probably cheaper to leave them just in Europe .
Carl #7996 is the only works car , and after research we found out its the TKS33 SA 985 the #62 car in the 1971 Monte ,
The others are just early cars in my Garage

Hi!
I've been following this thread with great interest and i'd like to provide you with some information i get. I've been in contact with THE Rauno Aaltonen (i dont think i need to explain who he is) and among other things, i asked him about the car he was testing in Monte Carlo back in 1970. This is his reply rougly translated:
"...What comes to car i was testing in Monte -70, you can say it was built to be rally cars prototype and it has little common with stock car.
Carburators were 3 dual carbs, Mikuni or Weber i dont remember. It has lock differential (?i dont know the word), racing chassis and all the unnecessary was stripped off. So about car you can say it was mobile laboratory, electrical memory measured simultaneosly over 40 different things. Colour was red like the all factory (Nissan) racing cars at the time.
Results were that good that i participated -71 Monte gaining unique result of 5. in general(?) competition. Monte was a RALLY back then, not a kindergarten like it is today. I used 3 years as a main test driver for making 240Z a race car and eventually results were good. Safari wons etc.
Those racing cars were so different from stock that you cant compare them. In the other hand racing car VIN's were for authorities only. With same number you could have many cars. It was so called "Carnee"..."
and second mail where i asked about more about car (was it Z432-R or...), he didnt answer all though.
"...as far as i know it was pure 240Z because we were concentrated purely on this cars advantages and disadvantages. Even the smallest detalis could make difference! Car had a right hand steering. I could drive occasionally with left hand steering but mostly right hand..."
Hope this helps a bit.
Al the Datsun 240z,s used for the rally and for recce in the 1971 Monte had different carnet nr and 4 of the 5 cars where LHD , just one customer 240z driven by Mr and Mrs van Bergen , from South Africa was RHD ,
One of these #62 driven by Raano Aaltonen in the 1971 Monte Carlo rally is still existing , and I know much more about , these 4 LHD cars where build in aug 1970 , regarding to the chassis nr from TKS33 SA 985 and changed in september to a Dutch registration .
Thanks to Alan , Rauno , Rob Janssen ( who was driving the car in the 1971 RAC Rally ) did we dig out the history .

Dear Mr. Beck,
your reply is most interesting, THANK YOU.
Do you agree with me that this thread is important to all of as we sometimes use the wrong bolts for our suspensions. As 10.9 bolts are difficult to get even here in Europe where the metric system is normal, we mostly use 8.8 bolts. Esp. at the front suspension there are 10.9ers at some places needed. I started thinking about that when I worked on my suspensions. Looking at the heads of the old bolts I saw the markers 4, 7 and 9 (or 6 ?) and I didn't know what metric bolt is the right to replace the OEM bolt.
Some of the bolts get an impact from the side, we call that "SCISSOR EFFECT". Someone told me, that a high strength like 10,9 is more sensible - and by that dangerous - to that cutting effect than 8.8 . Is that right or wrong?
Rolf
Rolf , overhere in Niederlande ( NL ) you can get whatever you need , i have a suplyer called FABORY , they have every thing in metric 10.9 12.9 with 1.25 and 1.00 mm pitch in hex and inbus , if you want i can sort out a catalog for you , Regards Adrian ,

Hi Gang:
Anyone looking for a 69 production year 240-Z? #485 with an 11/69 build date. Second owner, where the first was the Datsun Dealer. Looks rough, but might be in good enough shape to save. Anyone near Napa, California that could go inspect the usual rust area's? Not running nor started for years, reported with 37K miles and all documents from second lady owner..
Asking price of $5,200.00 seems in the ball park for an 11/ 69 Z. PM me if you are a potential buyer.
FWIW,
Carl B.
Carl I think any early Z ( 1969/70) is worth saving , people wil look to the early cars more and more , You see it with E types , XK and Healeys as well
working on Zs for 40 years
in Introductions
Are yoe allowed to use fender flares ? and what does the regulations says ?
Suspension wise there is a lot to do for historic rally and verry profesional stuff.
