1977, 280z with FS5W71B transmission

It’s not that difficult to find a 5 speed in a junkyard. Go to Car-part.com and do a search. They usually have the parts graded so you have an idea the condition. I got my for $400 and it’s it great condition. I just looked and they’re some out there but prices have gone up . Now they’re in the $500+ range. Inflation has even hit the junkyards. I can’t believe how expensive things are getting and how fast.

@EuroDat my outdated iPhone 8, I think, might be the cause of blurry… 

From the surface, there isn’t any chip or shaved off.  I’m impressed how well it is giving the age.   I will have to pull them apart to closely examine it.

@Terrapin Z has a large collection of parts.  You might want to disassemble further though to see what all you need.

 

Looks like the 4 speed uses the same part.

I have a "B" 4sp that could be used for parts. I have yet to open it so I would be in new territory. Car was in flood waters so...???? who knows.

If you do strip it for parts, I'd be interested in the front housing. Not show how it would go shipping it to Europe with prices for shipping these days.

240 Zadmire  ..........I'm impressed with how you just jumped there.  I rebuilt a five speed last year and it took me at least two weeks of studying the fsm and finding out how to pull gears, etc.  I was lucky enough to have a parts gear box that supplied some of the things I needed.  I have a good four speed from a 73 240 but I'm in SC.  I'm sure you can find what you need there on the "left" coast.

With you being in the Ca, you should be able to find a transmission pretty easy.  I just looked on CL and there are two on there.  A rebuild ZX 5 speed and another 4 speed.   I think he asking too much for the 5 speed but maybe you could negotiate a better deal.  Looks like it’s close to you.

You’ll be surprised how skilled you are when you’re motivated. 😉  Taking things apart has never been my problem 😉  every now and then I can’t put things back because I broke stuff in the taking out process 😉 

 

The price gouging seem affect everything 😞  I only took the transmission out of the casing to examine.  Other competing priorities are taking over.  But I’m very itching to take each gear apart.  Also, I’m hopping I can buy replacement parts from jp-carparts.com

I was surprised the bearing in front of the countershaft gear was "easy" to remove.   All the puller jaws I rented from Autozone were  thin enough to pull it out.  I resorted back to heating just the bearing and out of curious use the flat screw driver to to nudge a bit.   To my surprise, it actually budge.  I then gently pry out around bit by bit and big enough to put the puller in and pull off easily.

As for the gear, snap ring is removed.  Examine all angles and look really, really tight on the other side on the right.  It looks like a single unit with the shaft.   I'm 145lbs with all my might on the wrench trying to pull it off and the darn thing not even sweat.  Even heating it up won't budge.  I might have to do heating/cooling more.

 

any other tricks?

I’m fortunately found a YouTube clip and doesn’t look like I need to remove that gear at all.  Take a look at minute 14:30

 

The only usable tool I can borrow from autozone is the 3 claws puller.  I’m able to remove all with some “creativity”.  Follow my methods at your own risks!

 

I briefly examine the parts and so far so good.  2 broken parts.  I bundle them in groups exactly the way I removed them.  Will do a thorough cleanup and examine later.  I used the vice on the outer bearing shaft and gently tap the shaft until it loosen.  Seem to work.  The idle gear’s ring clip destroyed my 2 tools.  It’s so darn hard
