1978 Datsun 280z For Sale (San Francisco, CA)

Recommended Posts

1978 Datsun 280z for sale.

The good:
Original L28 2.8l straight-six motor. Starts and runs. Good compression. Sounds great.
5-speed manual transmission.
Fuel system recently overhauled - Fuel tank sandblasted, relined and sealed, and undercoated. New fuel pump and filter.
New oil, filter, NGK spark plugs and fuel injection and pump relays.
Odometer shows 37,xxx miles. Has more than likely rolled over.
4 new tires 225/65/15
Sunroof model.
Clean title.
Car is partially registered - fees all paid. Just needs smog to get tags. It is a federal/non-California car (Originally from Nevada) so will be a little easier to smog.
Complete car.

The bad:
Floor panels and frame rails have some rust and will likely need to be replaced.
Clutch hydraulics (master cylinder and slave cylinder) need to be replaced. Clutch still has some life in it.
Windscreen needs to be replaced due to large crack.

Unfortunately I do not have the time or space to restore the car at the moment.
Excellent candidate for restoration project.
Car will need to be towed.
Not interest in trades. Looking to sell ASAP.

$2,500 obo

Car is located in San Francisco, CA

Maybe posting a pic of it running might help to sell it. The last pic makes me doubt it runs because of the mess of brackets and what not in front of the battery. Looks like a lot of disconnected relays etc,

That photograph is from before I got it running - good observation.

The battery and relays have been cleaned up and it now runs well. I will add a video in the next day or two when I have time.

It has an egr, and if it has a catalytic converter they will run the emissions as a CA car IIRC. Mine is a CA car and its a PITA to pass emissions

Decided I'm going to keep this car so thread can be deleted.

Fyi, here is the video of it running. White smoke makes me wonder if it needs a rebuild but doesn't worry me too much. Appreciate the comments.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised. All that was needed to get it running (since the previous photo which you were absolutely right about the disconnected relays) was to clean up a few of the relays and injectors. Gonna cost a lot of time and money to restore but will be worth it in the end hopefully.

Mine is a 77 and I love it. Every now and then I have do a minor repair, etc. but for the most part its trouble free.

My frame rails are rusted and have holes in them. Going to start a thread on it soon to get some advice from this forum. You can't help but enjoy conversing with other members on this forum. It has taught me many things and I have to say it helps keep my moral up when it comes to repairs and what not.

Just saying that if you decide to keep it and stay with this club you will have fun.

You are oh so correct CO. Too bad you are so far away or I'd buy you a beer too.

I plan on, one of the many plans, installing the stock hood on my Z sometime this year. Can't wait. Want it to look like a 77 again.

Kevin, if you need help with pre emissions testing let me know. I can find out from a mechanic friend of mine what your "passing" numbers would be if you need. I can usually dial mine in enough to pass.

All the other years* are jealous in every way except collector value.   :)

I would drink that beer with pride, and the offer is the same from me at this end of the country!!

I love my noise reducing weatherstrip along the top edge of my window trim!!

* Except 78 which is basically identical with a few electrical differences. Haha!!

Thanks gents, and Rob, once I get this chassis work done and new clutch hydraulics installed, I'll definitely need some help getting this to pass a smog inspection.

The best thing would be to find someone willing to give you a printout of the numbers without running an emissions test. This way you wont be put on whats called a "gross-polluter" list. You don't want that to happen. My mechanic just plugs mine in and has to make a slight adjustment. I usually have it pretty close.

You do not have a CA car I know but I'm not sure if thats better or worse. The cat will clean up the exhaust to a certain point. But if you go in with "fat rich" condition you'll fail anyway. Get a print out and lets see the numbers. Not saying you are going to fail but lets look at things first.
